Well after much thought and advice from others I have decided to put my newely aquired P20 in the Mig 15. So I thought I would do a build thread.

Thanks to Bald Eagle for bringing this to my attention in the P20 airframe thread.............. Now if there was just a 90 mm F9 Panther out there at a nice price wouldn't life be good

The Mig 15 is modelled on a chinese Mig 15 and is from Pro EDF. I got it from Hobby King and I think their price now is $180 so excellent value. The thing that I am most impressed by is the scale cockpit and pilot for the sky high price of $8 + $ 6 [:D] now that is value.

The model is fiberglass fus and foam cored wing which has split flaps and is retract ready. I looked at the small e flite retracts and they are almost an exact fit.

The model is designed for 90 mm EDF and you actually get a fan in the kit.

Ali's Habu Jet pipe is the right length so a bit of luck there

Well The first Job I intend to do as I havnt got any servos etc for this plane yet is to extend the timber mounts to take the turbine. The model has a hatch at the rear of the plane underneath but I am not sure what this is for. Mig 15'S are very offten tail heavy so I will be mounting the turbine over the CG.

A little trick a friend taught me is to wrap your prescious turbine in cling film when you are using it to gauge size so as not get dust etc inside it. Sound like a good idea.

To extend the mounts I cut some 6 mm ply to size and this will be glued to the bottom of the mounts and then a shaped piece will be glued on top of this so that the turbine remains mounted in the middle of the plane.

Really intresting convertion, I bet this is the future in turbines. You do not need a $1000 kit anymore. A round fuselage makes the choice of tank easy :-)

So here are the mount extensions glued to the bottom of the EDF Fan mount. I still have to make up the thickness with the two pieces marked in red pen so that the engine remains in the middle of the fus. I just went down to my main workshop to cut them with my band saw and remembered the scary film '28 weeks later' [:o] that I watched last night got scared and ran back to the house............ What a coward.......... I will have to cut these and glue them in position in the morning.

Off to bed now as our club has its scale day tomorrow.

Any advice on the servos (Remember need to be HS65 ie 25 x 25 mm)

I would tend to agree Henke............... I am still thinking about the fuel tank however and its best location. In front of the turbine will be a little too in front of the CG I think. A cople of 11 oz sulivan saddle tanks might do the trick

Well the Zombies with the Rage Virus didn't get me in the night so I am up and decided to cut and fit the rest of the turbine mount. Easy Job and here it is gone.

All of that ducting is going to have to be cut out soon. It is in the way and I need the space. I might be able to make and install a smaller much lighter duct from the nose to the turbine

Just found a problem in the manufacture and design........... The prepared servo holes for the elevator are cut opposite each other and therefore there is not enough depth to get both servos in. I think I will have to make one of the holes bigger and put the servos next to each other. I will them have to have one elevator push rod longer that the other but that is ok. The rudder hole is fine. There might be a better way to do this so I will think on it a while and ask some of my friends who are far more inteligent that me

I think one servo is installed upside down above the opening with the output arm lining up with the opening and the other is installed conventionally on the hatch cover. WOuld be nice if there were directions [:o]

Because I havnt got any servos yet (Ali expect an order tomorrow) I thought I would havea go at the retracts. I was a bit concerned at what I would find under the covering of the wing. I was very pleased to find however that a nice ply box mount was all installed and after just a little cutting the Eflite electric retracts fit in perfectly. You can even get quite a bigger wheel in the well also which will be nice. As a precaution I am going to paint all around the mounts and foam near the mounts with thin epoxy to make it all nice and strong.

Now I have to investigate drinks cup sizes to mae a nice weel well liner

Another pleasant surprise............. When you remove the covering from the servo holes in the wing you find some very nicely cut pockets lipped with ply and in the kit you are supplied with plywood covered servo covers. I also found the hatch cover that I thought was missing from the tail.

I have to say I am liking this plane more and more as I work on it

PS Why the heck does eflite give you such short servo wires on your electric retracts. I suspect so when you remove them the connector is near the unit

Retracts in. As you can see after a bit of wittleing the eflite retracts fit a treat and there is plenty of room for largish wheels. The wheels in the picture are the stock habu wheels that are ok on our grass strip so bigger should be better.

I am sure the nose retract will not be as easy as the mains

I have now cut away the edf duct work....... I have to say in some ways it felt wrong doing this but in the way for turbine use and not necessary in my opinion.

Quite a lot of space to work with. I am going to try and keep items to the sides and top etc in order that I can maybe put in a smaller duct to keep all the stuff out of the airflow.

Need to source a/some tanks soon to see where these can best fit

When people say a set of retracts are a 'drop in fit' it always makes me smile cos I have never found any............ even those that are designed for a particular plane that are a drop in fit.

As you can see I have got the nose retract in by cutting the former. I can replace this with a bolt in bit later so that I can remove them if necessary.

Also I am going to have to pack the bearers so that I can move the retract steering mechanism more inside the fus. The is actually quite a lot of space in this plane for a small model. I might change my mind about that as I fit more and more of the equipment. The electric retracts certainly help in this regard however

Alao as ever I am going to apply some more glue to those formers

Here are the hightened mounts for the retracts. This little piece of work also means that I wont have to rejoin the bit on the former I cut away.

Now who do I know that is clever enough to make me a fiberglass fuel tank to fit in that space in front of the turbine starter motor. or is there one available I wonder

I was noticing that you were skiving off work today as your posts were rather frequent and during the day. Not working at home I trust! Yes I am watching this build as I saw the plane at the weekend. The engine is a Sprite though not a Wasp. The Mig might just be a bit small for my engine.

As far as tanks go If you get one made it may well cost as much as the plane. I would look though all the catalogues for Sullivan and Graupner as I am sure you can find something suitable. 2 sullivan 16 oz V shaped boat tanks might fit the sides of the fuslage or alternatively fit a round tank just in front of the engine.

Been working at home from 6 am doing loads of figures. Yes a boat tank might indeed be the answer. or I will have to home my skills and make one myself

Thanks for that link John.

I had a sort through my spares box and found 3 No 260 cc tanks. I can fit in 2 of them whic will give me 520 cc which I think is about 18.5 oz. I will also has a 3 oz header so I could finish up with about 20 oz. I would like a little more than this if possible so might try and source 2 very slightly bigger tanks.

I think people are generally flying with 22 oz in the Habu 32's so slightly bigger than I have found would be nice

After messing about for ages here is the answer I think........... 1 260 cc tank each side and a 3 oz header tank in the bottom

That would definitely fly it for 4-5min includeing engine start up and taxiing out. A good start for testing before decideing on maybe moulding a custom tank solution.
