Add in cylinder head design. Everything new from the dealers is a "buy" engine.

In the newest version, i think the cylinder head is not changed.

DLE has constantly made improvements and changes to their engines over the years, there are no official version 1, 2, or 3, etc. engines. About the only thing on a current production 111 thats's the same as the original ones are the bolts that hold it all together. They are all excellent and strong running engines but unless you know the crankshaft has been replaced by someone that knows how to do it, steer clear of low time engines with serial numbers below 650.

Is there a way of telling new from old design by looking at the engine . if so what do I look for?

Ahhh, serial number was mentioned above.... Just buy an engine with a higher number. If you're getting a new engine from a dealer I find it highly unlikely you'll get one with a serial number under 2,000, probably a lot higher.

Current production DLE111 engines have serial numbers near 5000.

People worry too damn much.

Once again I'll suggest people run a couple of searches, even in this forum, on the desired subject matter. All this stuff is well over a year dead and gone, wasting the time and effort of people again answering the same questions.

Yes, 3 round dots from the casting mold on the front of the front cylinder and rear of the rear cylinder is the newest cylinder design. A rear crankshaft bearing housing (where the serial number is engraved) of about 1-1/2" is the latest crankcase and crankshaft design and has only been out for a few months, the older version bottom end had a rear bearing housing of only 1-1/4", this is measuring the the outside of the casting where the rear crankshaft bearing is located. There are several other changes that have been made over the years but these are the major ones. Bottom line, if you want to guaranty you get the latest version you have to buy it from a distributor that buys directly from the faactory, not a local hobby shop or online swapshop.

jedijody ,Thanks for that reply. My LHS was going to give me a super good deal, I checked it out and it is indeed the old model.

Tired Old Man, I did a search and could not get the info I wanted. I thought that is what these forum's are for.
