The ST 40 did run without the on board glow. At the very end I removed the current to the plug and it kept running. But there was a drop in RPM.

Yes it does keep running without current to the plug and it would have flown without the battery. I just used the battery to make it more reliable.

It must be the gasoline helping to keep the plug lit, because when I ran the ST on Sunny Side (which is almost all ethanol) and 20% castor, the engine died as soon as I disconnected the glow driver.

Status: offline 		well, if you have any of that stuff left, try a mix with 20% gasoline...
like 3 Sunny + 1 gas +1 Castor,
and see if the hotter runs lead to unlit plug working.

I cant really see a way for me to try a cooler run with the e85.
Even so, at this point I may have to buy a IR thermometer if I am going to investigate the temps.
Running hotter is as easy as blocking some of the cooling fins,
but I wouldnt want to try that without being able to keep a better eye on the temp of the head

why MY E85 tests are running fine with no methanol

Yes glow plugs work with gasoline.  In factg on the conversion and gas engine forums people have run pure gas with glow plugs, but it works better with a bit of methanol.  Methanol is not the only fuel that will react with glow plugs.  Obviously nitro does as the old all nitro control line speed racers would not work.  Gasoline is a mix of chemicals including heptane which I think will also have a catalytic reaction.

and it will either be Better, The Same, or Worse than without the increased gas content.
(of course, 'pump gas' in a lot of places is actually E10, I recall I used to see M10 pumpgas)

Sure, I can try a batch of 2 E85 + 2 E10 + 1Castor... uh.. E45o20?

Couldnt get it to run on an unlit plug.
... idk, maybe if I leaned the bjezus out of it it might, but I aint gonna try that till I get an IR temp gun

Castor oil will not stay in suspension in gasoline. Just make sure you shake the fuel jug before you add to you airplane. It should be good until you fly it out, if you fly within five minutes or so. Now with that said maybe the ethanol will work as a mixing agent keeping the castor in suspension???

Status: offline 		Since E85 or even E70 is mostly alcohol I would think castor oil will work.  Has anyone tried cutting it with some methanol?  I think that some using glow plugs on gas engines in the gas engine thread had luck with gas cut with a small amount of methanol to keep the plug lit.

Yes I have tried a half methano half E85 blend. It worked and the plane flew. BUT the engine (ST .40) ran better on just methanol and castor oil. This is all I use now. Methanol and castor oil. Cheap and it works.
