Hey there RCU,

Tried to boil off my tires today but to no avail. I took them out after 5, 10, and 15 minutes of boiling, tried to peel them off, and still nothing. All the guides I've heard say to boil for 5-10 minutes and they should come clean off.

Unfortunately that didn't happen for me. Instead, the picture below shows what resulted. Basically, I just ended up ripping my tire =( I don't need to save the tire (I'm actually trying to replace them), but I do need the rims, and it sort of looks like the residues from the tires ripping will prevent me from being able to glue another tire on.

Any tips/tricks/hints/stories of boiling off your tires? Thoughts as well?

Status: offline 		use a dremel to cut the tire up
rip the tire off with pliers, and and residual rubber left on the rim you can lightly sand off with a dremel sanding bit

I had the same crap when I tried boiling, except I was trying to save the tire(which tore)

Status: offline 		It's not easy no matter what anyone says. I had to boil one of mine for a long time, and even then the glue audibly cracked as I tried to seperate the tire form the rim. And it wasn't a clean removal either, with bits of rubber still stuck to the rim.

But it can be done with buggy or MT rims. Don't try it with Touring Car rims. The plastic melts in the hot water:



I eventually just cut the tires off and used a homemade adapter so I could put the rim in a lathe and using a screwdriver as a lathe-tool, managed to get the rims clean. Here's the homemade adapter for the lathe:



And here's the finished rim. The one on the right it fully done. The one on the left still needs more work:




But back to larger rims made of plastic that won't soften. Unless I have a new (or fairly new) tire or rim, I just buy new. If i really want to save just one rim, I do the boiling, but it takes a lot of time. I've never been able to save the tire.

Acetone (super-glue remover) won't do a thing, even when left soaking overnight. I suspect the oven method will yield the same result as boiling.

I have a set of TC tires I want to save that the rim on one shattered after 1 little bump with less than 15 mins on the tires I think I'm going to try the baking method this time to see the results seeing I already tried acetone with 0 results

Status: offline 		I have two tips if you want to re-use rims after the tires wear out. First, when gluing them, only glue four points on each bead. Secondly, if you've done first, you should be able to just pry the worn tires off, then a file or some careful dremel work will take care of the remains of the old bead, leaving the rim ready for it's new meats.



Or get beadlocks.
