Takes a lot of balls to do what they do everyday..... takes even more to do what they do everyday and have the self-discipline to know when to step down. Amazing team with an amazing tradition - I'm sure the future will hold the same. Lots of respect and a big salute to Koss and the rest of the team.

Actually the last manouver looked better, they should rather give him a medal.
Have a look at the videos from the Phantom era, they were even closer to the ground than that....

Anyway it is not the first time that a pilot is replaced in the BA Team, 2 or 3 years ago they already fired one, can't remember his name. They are on a bang seat 24hours a day!

Wow, it sure was!

The Blues are a class act. The pressure they're under during practice and performances must be intense. I wouldn't want it. The leader made a very tough choice, probably a career-ender.  He has my respect!

Ever notice how a little dog yaps AFTER the big dog has passed?

That team leader is a big man in my book, and he's honest. He had the guts to face the fact that he was the problem, and took himself out of it before real damage was done to the team or its reputation. Those kind of men are too few and far between, and he is to be commended.

In January 1982, almost half of the USAF Thunderbirds were wiped out, following their lead right into the desert outside Indian Springs at 400 mph. If you go into the Birds museum today and ask about it, they won't acknowledge that it happened.

Which attitude would you choose?

Jessie- you got that right.

I flew aerobatics once with this guy in his Zlin: www.fai.org/aerobatics/node/407 about a year before he was killed. He flew the whole competition routine.

Reminds me of Donnie Cochran - Sept 1995 after flying 300 airshows with the team, Capt. Donnie Cochran grounded himself as Blue Angels CO/flight lead for "flaws in his flying". He stated he didn't want to let his ego (the desire to keep flying) affect the safety of the team. Cochran was/is a class act to step up and admit that.

Tis better for your career to step down willingly than to be told to step down by someone higher up. I imagine that his superiors will see this as a strong leadership move and he will fare ok because of it. Honor, Courage, Commitment. I'm not a huge fan of the Blues but the CO shows that he possesses the three core Navy values to the letter.

This whole episode makes my respect for the Blue Angels raise even further. They have always been the best. This is why they will always be the best. I dare anyone to have the same amount of respect for human life, dignity, honor, and humility as this team leader. Definitely the example I wish for myself, and mostly- my children.

So, how many G's do you think they were pulling when they aborted the maneuver?

On the video, which was the first team member to break formation? It wasn't the leader, was it?

This reminds me of a funny story years ago involving rc airplanes.

There was a young kid that had been flying a year or so, I don't know whether he got disoriented? or just let his mind slip..but suddenly he just panicked and started yelling "I forgot how to fly! I FORGOT HOW TO FLY!" he was standing theretrying to pass off the transmitter to ANYONE that would take it.....I don't even recall who took it or much else . I just remember him drawing a blank and feeling like he was no longer in control..it was memorable to say the least.

I know I have flown long enough sometimes to start feeling sort of sloppy on the controls.. maybe that is what happened to the flight leader? He became too comfortable?

From someone who flys for the (U.S) military- The whole comment about the Phantom era is null and void. It is like comparing apples to oranges. That era was a time in all military branches that put more emphasis on recruiting and retention, than it did in flying safety milestones. (I am not saying they weren't safe, but i am saying that years of flying since has proven that you dont need to be 50 feet off the ground to be any more impressive). Since the crash of the T-Birds (T-38) team- the demo team concept has taken a turn towards higher hard decks and safer routines that still "push the envelope" and wow the crowd.

Ok gentlemen, I've had to step in and clean up this thread. I've had to remove a BUNCH of posts because some people here simply wanted to try and start an argument just for the fun of the argument. That has been cleaned up now.

Now for those that want to participate in this thread, please heed this advice. For those that want to discuss the incident involving the Blue Angels please feel free to do so. But for those that want to trash the Blue Angels simply for the fact that they are trying to cause an argument, I will say only this one piece of advice. Do it again and you'll spend a long time on Moderated Status. It's your choice.

Ken

It is one thing to do a low pass, flying straight, and completely another to come to a low altitude, in front of a crowd, pulling hard to stay above the ground. And then you do it flying the lead aircraft of a tight formation and realise you got it wrong... I think the decision to step down was the right thing to do. Respect.

Does anybody know if Blue Angels uses callers on the ground to ensure safety and positioning of the maneuvers?

... that did not prevent the famous Thunderbirds ejection, though:

That is good to hear. My perception (as a civilian) of how the Navy handles mishaps, was that for every mishap a career had to be sacraficed to appease the public, press, gods . . . whatever. Depending on the nature of the mishap, sometimes that seemed just and other times horribly unfair.

He may not command again but his service could continue. Again he stepped down on his own. He wasn't involved with anything scandelous, he just made a mistake he couldn't forgive himself for. At least this is what I have gathered from the reports on the news I have seen. I want to stress That I do not speak for the Navy or the Blues and have no other information than what I have seen on the news.

A small error with potentially catastrophic results, yes. Display flying has been fine tuned (generally after analysis of events like this and worse) over the years in the interests of safety. Was a nice smoothly flown manoeuvre right up to where he tightens a little to avoid terra firma, spitting a couple of wing men out - they fly the break out pretty well! Not sure the resignation was entirely necessary, but Blue 1 has my respect for offering it up - I reckon after that incident he would be the safest leader around, focusing just that little bit more than before. Glad they all walked away.
