Does anyone know of a good sealer for S T Y R E N E foam (Urethane foam sanding dust is Fine and Nasty to breath) that will allow a good bond of polyester resin to the foam. Or what glues, paints, resines will Polyester resin bond to?

My intent is to add Glass rod to Foam . Foam to resist buckleing in longerons and Glass caps on two sides of foam to stiffen. ect. ect. My own custom building method aimed at the lightness at the end of the tunnel.

If you plan on using polyester resin on your plug then dont use styrene foam. There is a yellow foam that is polyester safe and easy to shape. I forget the name of the product though. Can anybody else help out here with the name?

I would have liked to know the answer to this question a couple years ago, but since I started using west system epoxy, I will never use P resins again. I know the epoxy seems expensive but trust me it goes a long way and has so many advantages.

Just my .02.

I'll stay tuned for an answer though, just in case I want to get high of of P resin fumes some day.

If you use polyester resin, urethane foam can take it, but styrofoam (white, blue, or pink) will melt.

Epoxy will work over any of the above.

In his book "Fiberglass & Composite Materials", Forbes Aird says...there is a material which is cheap, generally available, and effective. The secret is ordinary exterior latex house paint. It must say "alkyd" somewhere on the label--interior latex is unsuitable. He suggests thinning it and spraying, but I'm not sure that is necessary. Experiment on a separate piece and try it out. Won't cost much and it will prove itself one way or the other. Regards.

I painted polystyrene with vinyl acetate (a product for bonding concrete to substrates, I think similar to Tite Bond) after drying I put Polyester resin and glass down on it, used some heat to expedite cure ( sometimes heat causes solvents to break seals) but it cured, bonded to vinylacetate and did not attack foam.

WELDBOND works also, it is a white glue, HomeDepot, Lowes?

thanks for your info guys! GJS

Here is a link to foam that is compatable with polyester resins. The 6# weight is great for making plugs. Sands and shapes extremely well. This product will also take dope and auto primer. Sometimes I prefer to build up a finish with dope and silkspan finished with auto primer. The dope and silkspan method ensures that you will not any fiberglass print through on your plug.

Freeman supply also sells this type of foam I believe.
