As much as I love an Ira Kepford bird I have been thinking to go outside the box a little.

I just bit the bullet and ordered the silver ARF, plug in wing version. Anyone flying this beast on the DA-120?

I know these fixed wing versions, being lighter, have flow with the Moki 150. The Moki 150 being 8.5 HP, and your DA 120 will be more 11 to 12 HP. I would say it would not be an issue. It should pull it up to and even beyond the DNE speed of the airframe.

Hello Gary,
I'm in California and continuing to build my Comp ARF Corsair. I'd like to meet up and fly together with other Comp ARF Corsair owners. Please pass my info along so all can meet up. My email radu@mac.com

Also if I understand your last post correctly? To keep the temp down I'll have to add baffles and have operational cowl flaps to keep my Moki 250 in good tempture range? Even though I have the external fuel pump and not the turbulator?

Maybe I missed something. I have run my Moki 250 on an engine stand for about 25 minutes. Oh by the way I have the Solo 3-blade hub and carbon fiber 32" blades.

Thanks for any assistance,

Hello Micheal. Welcome aboard. Always glad to help and even better to fly with others. It would be great to have a meeting of the Comp Corsairs.

Although I wouldn't necessarily say the operational cowl flaps are a must, the baffling certainly is. My buddy Scott Prossen has seen this with his F4F and other Moki powered planes he has owned. These babies run hot, and as you read from the telemetry on Phil's plane, 40 to 50 degrees cooler with baffling is a lot. When I get to that point, I'll be posting a template that I have fit on ours and am sure it will work. I can post it in PDF form.

One other recommendation Scott made to me was to use the wooden blades on the Solo prop, at least for trails. Even a slight prop strike with those CF blades is much more likely to damage the crank. Just something to think about.

Great thank you. I can sure use the PDF template. I have three spare carbon fiber blades and six wooden from Solo Props. That's good advice. I'll be sure to use the wooden ones on maiden.

Another question for all. My Moki engine mount only has three holes. Should I drill more or drill side holes into firewall and use steal plates over the engine mount ring?

Thanks again Michael.

Thanks again Michael.

The three mounts is all you need Michael.

Note the recommended 2.5deg right thrust, and up to .5deg up thrust, in the manual. Also, as you know, the engine is heavy, with a lot of torque. The suggestion in the manual to not use the conventional blind nuts in the firewall is a good one IMO. Larger fender washers is a better way to go. On #2, I'm coating the entire back of the firewall with our epoxy / Steel Powder mix. This will result in a solid backing nothing can compress into.

Yes Wayne. Here is a quote from Greg.

"Phil (owner/builder) installed the Spektrum telemetry system so we have airspeed, cylinder head temperature, RPM, voltage and 2.4 fade data."

Sounds like a very useful option.

I just came back from our local hobby shop. They have most of it there. The owner showed me his cell phone that he downloaded the apt for it into. It has a very cool screen right on your phone. You plug the data receiver into your phone, and you get all the telemetry in real time, right on your cell phone. Very very cool.

On-board unit is $39.99, probes for various readings are from $8.99 to $15.99 for the ones he had, and the receiver that plugs into your phone was $89.99.

Some more data from Phil's system.

"Our number 3 cylinder head temp runs 135-145 inflight. We are going to move the temp probe to the
number 1 cylinder to see how much of a temp difference there is since 3 is supposed to be
the one that drops out at times. Max RPM we see inflight is 3700, most of the time its
running around 3000, giving 80ish MPH in level flight. Max high speed pass we've done is
108 MPH, so well within the limits."

Good job posting the data we have extracted from the flights on Phil's Corsair. One minor correction, we are flying in Las Vegas at the North field, Willy McCool Park.

The attached picture from our first test flight at the dry lake (hope it didn't turn out huge) is an example of something you DO NOT want to see. This is a wing drop during a landing, note the elevator deflection. The photo caught the bird right as I started the recovery. Luckily Mr. Moki checked in with all five cylinders and pulled the 63 pound beast out of the shredder. From this experience I learned to set an approach that allows me to see the top of the wing all the way down to the flare. I drive it on with a bit of power and don't go to idle until the mains are on the ground. I also learned to wear a diaper when flying a friend's very expensive model for the first time!

Thanks for endulging my little thread hijack Gary.

Yes, I did mistakenly put your guys in California. Sorry. Good news, your closer to us. I was wishing we lived closer.

The diaper is a great idea., but I find the pucker does a pretty good job by itself. You really have to set all that aside as she taxis out, and until she is back down. It is only after you step from the 'cockpit' that the reality of all that kicks in. Sobering indeed.

It has been as high as 500 Ft AGL, but normal flys between 350 to 400 Ft.

Just for fun, the March issue of Fly RC has the coverage of Monster Planes 2011, where our BIG HOG, and P-47 Zombie was flown. David Hart did the article and photography and as usual, did a great job on both. They did not have room for all the pictures he wanted used to go with the copy, but we did get some nice comments on our planes. There were so many wonderful planes there, no article this size could do it justice. Check out the 12' P-47s. They were the hit of the ball for sure. Hope you all can attend some day.

These Comp ARF Corsairs have been on the front cover of RC magazines and deservedly so, IMO.

Maybe they will come out with an obstacle avoidance sensor for it.
