With out any hesitation, I would get the Great Planes P-51
It is sporty scale and will fly all day on a 40 or scream on a 46.
A 52 4 stroke is a little light . I had one for over 10 years.
It was looking very worn but still flew and flew well.

either the great planes or the top flite would be good kits to build. the great planes is a 40 size, somewhat more sport scale design using the ultrasport wing airfoil. i have seen them powered with 40s and as large as saito 91s. the larger engines need the firewall moved back to get them to balance but it flies well with these larger engines.

i have the top flite mustang-not the great planes. the top flite flies more like a scale mustang but it flies very well. if you do the top flite get spring air retracts not the robarts with the plastic frames. also reinforce the gear mounts. if you have a grass runway change the angle of the gear mounts to tilt the gear toward the wing leading edge, so the axles are even with the wing leading edge.

also you may want/need to adjust the wing angle of attack on the top flite- mine tended to climb at full throttle. to eliminate down elevator trim i ended up adding a spacer strip of balsa to the front of the wing saddle. i have an st g90 in mine- this is agood power level to get good performance in this plane. a 120 4 stroke would be good too.

you can see my top flite in my gallery pics.

Jeff:

The Brian Taylor 69" Mustang is about as accurate as you can get in this size range. Contact Sean (smchale). He has built a couple of them. They can be seen at his website: www.strictlyscale.com.

I have the Great Planes 40 size kit. It has a lot of detail and comes in at about 7.5 pounds and flies very nice on a Thunder Tiger TT46 Pro.
Heres a pic, more in the gallery.

Hi, Jeff

I have a Great Planes powered by an OS 46FX with Dave Brown retracts. It flies extremely well and looks great in the air. Finished second in Fun Scale at the King Orange Scale Meet in June.

This is my second kit. (strained the first one through some trees) Made only minor modifications in building. Am using individual aileron servos, and canted landing gear a bit forward to prevent nose-overs. Other than that, follow the EXCELLENT building instructions.

If you choose the Great Planes, I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

Good Luck and Good Flying.

Gordon

Call great planes. They stock replacement parts.
