Has anyone ordered from www.ductedfans.com? Any good?

Status: offline 		Plenty of 90mm fans available, what do you need from the fan though? Power requirements in thrust, what batteries you plan on carrying etc etc will help narrow your choices down a lot.

Status: offline 		 HobbyKing and RCCastle have many nice fans. For $34 you can have pretty decent performance with this on 6S 5000mah High C rated battery and an 85A ESC

If you need more power just add a prodesign 36mm 1900kv motor (often used in the common 90mm changesun fan) with a 100A ESC
or this Lander 90mm setup if you don'y mind the extra weight with a 100A ESC

Status: offline 		Tried to buy from ductedfans.con twice but they never answered my emails. I've bought 70mm fans from EJF and 120mm fans from Tamjets both with great luck and offering very friendly help.

I ordered a 90mm-700 HET-RC EDF from ejf.com and it just showed up a couple days ago. I also have a 1800Kv motor on order.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a full list of spec's for the fan, just weight and size. I'll have to do my own static thrust tests to determine if this fan will be capable of the ~8lbs of thrust I need.

Status: offline 		If you have an 1800Kv motor on order then I am guessing 6 cells? Which motor is it, 700-68 series?

6s setups in the 9305 fan will yield around 2.5kg thrust or so running 1800Kv motors, no where near the 3.6kg you are looking for.

If you had answered my query with your requirements as asked I could have suggested a couple of guaranteed combos that would do exactly what you want, no guess work, no having to buy twice.

Where's the chart that lists the total weight of the fan PLUS all on board components PLUS measurements? Is there one?

I need a 5" or 5.5" fan, sorry, I don't know the mm, and would like to find out what's availabel for my particular model?

Probably weigh in at 5-7 lbs. Just a guess.

Thanks for that lead.

Interesting to say the least, but Gee, they are selling it. This is a "one of a kind" fan.

I'm looking for a bolt in "off the shelf" cataloged fan. Easier to get parts, especially if a dozen guys have the same fan.

Three day return? Take three days to mount the thing and juice it!

They don't want it, so how great can it be?

Status: offline 		I agree with you here, one offs just aren't the way to go. I've looked at just about everything out there (I think) and I thought: 1) the RC Lander units were the best bang for the buck but I broke and and sprung for Schuebler DS-94 that produce more power which I think I needed. There were a few one offs that I like but had to say no to. Let us know what you do!

Status: offline 		Ava I bought a couple of these 5" / 127mm fans from Hobby King. They look pretty good for $30 fans. I'm hoping to get 10 or so pounds of thrust out of them. I'm just going to use basic motors, lipos, and esc's. We shall see how they do. I'll design a jet around the thrust output they produce.

Yes, I do have to choose a fan. Certainly knowledge helps. I'm glad I can rely on you guys to guide me in the best direction.

All your projects look interesting and obviously, different. I would like to know more about them?

Mine is really different and I cannot aford to make any mistakes, I've already made a few with this model, which BTW, has been in a Thread before, but really didn't take off.

The engine choice is "key."

I need performance power, light, compact at 5" to 5.5" max in diam. and it's for CL.

Let me know when you get that 10 lbs of thrust, you do have two of them!

If these things turn out to be so anemic in power that they only put out like 5 pounds of thrust each, I have just the jet for them picked out allready!

5" = 127mm, easy enough to work out, 25.4mm to the inch.

If you look through my alloy fan section you will see the 127mm fan with Scorpion motor, the weight of the fan assembly is there in the combo section, approx 890 grams ready to bolt in, thats just under 2lb.

5-7lb AUW?? Dont you mean KG? A model running a 5 inch fan is usually in the  11-20lb range.

My Extreme CNC Alloy Dynamax fan with Scorpion motor pushes 15lb thrust on 12 cells at 100 amps, weighs 890 grams.
My Extreme CNC Alloy Ramtec fan with Scorpion motor pushes 12.5-13lb thrust on 10 cells at 100 amps, weighs 940 grams.

Afaik my fan is the lightest 5" out there with good power output. The ramtec version keeps the weight of batteries down, about 250g less in cells.

If you want more power we have the full Ramtec fan available with Scorpion 5035 motor installed, its 1.3kg AUW and pushes around 18lb thrust at 168A on 12s.

which motor are you going to run in those 127mm fans? I ordered the same EDF from Hobby King after the 90mm I previously ordered from EJF failed to impress me (4-5lbs max). It hasn't shown up yet, but I'm anxious. I just ordered their recommended motor to go along with it. Is that what you went with or did you pick a higher grade?

I have to say I am impressed with that site by the way. I found a 10S 5Ah battery on there for super cheap, had to get it AND a 100A high frequency ESC to go along with it.

My fan change will require a fundamental design change on my project, but I dont have to worry about how much power I'll be able to produce now. After looking into things deeper it was far cheaper to just use a less expensive larger diameter fan with B-grade components than use premium components to try and get more power out of a smaller unit.

By the way, if you wanted my advice about how to use them I would say a twin engine jet. You can only fly one at a time, right?

I didn't like how this EDF stuff was going. You pick a plane. then you pick a power system then you have to spend a ton of money on cutting edge high dollar equipment in the EDF just to get it up to the manufactures specs to fly your plane. As you just did with your 90mm.

Maybe when the manufacturer claims 5 kg of trust we should convert that into 5 lps of thrust.

I haven't decided on motors yet. Might try one of each.

I like the 45-70 inrunner but worry about heat since the designers in their wisdom have left out cooling vents all together.
Then there is the T600 outrunner. I know it will stay cool but I don't know how much power I'll get out of it.

If this is your first time dealing with Hobby King keep in mind that occasionally there lipos are DOA. Don't get mad just chuck it into the trash and buy a new one. There that cheap.

Thanks for that info.

Working on my drawings for the C-101, I mentioned in the PM. Hard to believe I drew the originals over 25 years ago. Drew the BEA Hawk also!

When I had it set up for the propped Rossi 61 RE, the span was 53" and the length was 56".

Now that I'm going EDF, I can reduce the span to scale measurements at 48". I can also put the wing where it belongs. I had it a bit forward on the Rossi prop plans.

I've tried to order from them twice in the last 2 years but needed to ask one small simple question first. I emailed them 11 times and have yet to get ANY reply. I am very disappointed with their customer service. I desperately need a fan so I finally called Tam@tamjets.com and he immediately sent it to me. One email and then one phone call FROM TAM and all was done; more expensive but I was VERY, VERY HAPPY!!!
