Status: offline 		Had dinner tonight with the Belgians. This was an act of hosptality as we recalled memories from 2005 Romily where I was treated with such hospitality by all the contestants. We met up with the Lockharts and also Joe Lachowski and enjoyed roadkill, steak and ribs. Back to bed to prepare for another day of warmup flights and contest staff assistance.

P.S., tell Richard I have worked to dispel the rumored silent mode switch.

Status: offline 		Hi Don, thank you very much for this thread, for those who are far this is the better way to follow the WC, good comments and nice pictures. We would have to be the 36th country participating at the WC but for administrative problems we are not there. I remember you and the present you gave us when we attended the 2010 NATS, you were nice with as. I have the purpose to back to Muncie for the 2012 NATS, to continue learning and get fun.
Good luck to the USA team all them nice guys, very supportive, to Mike, Dave, Chris, Boby.... , I hope to see all you the next year.

Status: offline 		And I tabulated the team scores so far (assuming I did this correctly as I interpret Christophe as team versus individual champion from last WC (if I understood the introduction at the opening ceremonies.) Tomorrow will be a big day for those making the semi-finals.

His wing departed in practice site 4 yesterday afternoon and he is rebuilding aircraft.

Status: offline 		I was speaking to Brett's mom Cyndy who may have some still pictures as well. This was his secondary plane, I understand. Yesterday morning flying in the wind was challenging. Today wind is calmer and flying is improving as well. Many happy pilots with excellent flights. Scores should be going up today this is the best flying I've seen so far. Brett had a solid flight and Jason and Chip fly this afternoon.

Status: offline 		Chip put in a solid flight today and Brett put in a great flight this morning. I did not get to see Andrew's flight today as he was on site 3. Chip's second Visa is back in form and ready for competition and he test flew it this evening. Today was interesting in that there were periods of time with little or no wind, and other time (just before lunch) that it got up to at least 13-15 on the ground. I flew a demo flight right after lunch with wind at 12 but it was blowing much less than I thought at higher altitude. The wind actually shifted to the right at about 3, which put several off center mid-round. Later in the afternoon it picked up significantly. Joe, Joe, Bernt and I got some practice in this evening at site 1. Wind was blowing almost straight in at that point. May NATS competitors are arriving today and I expect to see somewhere between 150 and 200 spectators for the finals on Monday.

Status: offline 		Reflecting some on what I saw this week. There is no particular style of flying favored this year. However the distance is being enforced very well, so all the best scoring pilots are able to maintain approximately 150 meters to 175 meters consistently at that distance. The judges are very keen and all have expert depth perception and can detect an aircraft moving in or out just 10 or 15 meters during a maneuver. This is what is separating many of the pilots from 10th through 35th since all are flying so well. Gerhard Mayer style is the slowest, with very defined and precise close in flying at 150 meters. He has winglets on the top and bottom of his wings for increased control at these low airspeeds. Wind presents somewhat of a challenge, but the advantage is speed within the maneuvers is slower, with more time to make wind corrections during radius segments for example. Surprisngly, CLPR and BLRP flying YS 175 motors and larger diameter props (Brett and Onda also) are able to fly as slow as the electrics with defined, consistent speed throughout. Up to this point in the competition, I see no advantage or disadvantage to glow versus electric. Heading out to practice now.

Status: offline 		We watched a few practice flights today. Austrian, Germans and Chinese practice at site 4 today. Some good flying and you can tell the extreme difference in difficulty in the F11 as compared to P11. The individual and team standings have the opportunity of changing tomorrow based on how well each competitor flies. Team standings will be determined by the sum of the placings of each team member, after the final standings are posted Tuesday. Judges training took place on site 1 this morning but was closed to all but judges and the demo pilots were Dave Lockhard and Andre Bouchard. Tomorrow will be semi-finals with two rounds, 15 per site times 2 sites. Finals unknown selection will take place tomorrow evening in preparation for finals on Monday. Hope to see y'all. THe many NATS competititors are beginning to arrive.

Status: offline 		Stopped by site 4 this evening. Great to see Brandon Landry and Randy Hicks bringing out their new plane, "Talon". Ken Valez and several others were on had to watch the preparations. Rubin Trumpp (Germany) was finishing up his practice. It was very intersting to see Brandon's reaction to watching Rubin's flying style as they are so close in age, yet the aircraft style of flying is so different than what we are used to seeing here in the United States. The Austrians were still on hand to socialize some prior to sunset. Georgie lost no time giving Gerhard Mayr advice on his flying as well as the local Muncie map attractions. We like this camera which takes great pictures even in near dark conditions.

Status: offline 		Chip was up first in finals. He put in a pretty good flight. Then BPLR put in a solid flight. Gerhard was more solid still. Andrew flew and left little for the judges to deduct. Bottom line, all are flying supurb. I'll try and take some video we'll see. I'm sure there will be a lot of cameras shooting today!

Status: offline 		Here are some pictures from this morning, the flight order for today, and the Unknowns. It was nice talking to Wolfgang Matt. When I asked him what he thought of the facility and the United States, he said the AMA site is wonderful and his experience here has been memorable and has been very impressed with how professional the staff running the competition. Dave Lockhart have our planes ready for unknowns if needed. Brett and Marco (Mazzuchelli- 16 years old) are alternating with the warmup flights for the final. Picture of Stefan Kaiser just after his F-11 flight. He is 19 years old. Some stamps and souveniers from the Lichtenstein.

Status: offline 		What impressed me most about Christophe's flying (and Benoit) was that they were flying slow and deliberate, yet very smooth and graceful, not sloppy as an airplane would do when flying that slow. I spoke with Christophe and he is running (if I remember it correctly) a 20 x 10 with a somewhat conventional shape (versus wide blade). It did not have the same constant width (i.e., paintstick) shape that several others were flying. The main advantage of the YS 175 is the ability to run larger props. I'd try a larger diameter prop on my Black Magic but would need to change landing gear to get higher clearance. I'm running a very small prop (18.1 x 12) but am comfortable with the setup. Christophe and Benoit also had the best rolling circles. Most agree the geometry of many of the finalists were off, particularly the half cuban 8 and the sharks tooth. But what is this technically- 1 point per 15 degrees. All the best pilots held their aircraft at a constant distance out which was very impressive particularly during the early afternoon when the wind picked up some.

Of course there is the Belgian competition in next Spring Bert mentioned.

Status: offline 		Many congratulations to the U.S. Team and Andrew for his hard work and excellent flying. Chip for his consistency and spirit. For Brett for his most excellent warmup flights which demonstrated his ability and competence to be competitive and world class. The Austrians, French, Japanese and their flawless models, Germans to include Bernd who had motor or speed controller difficulty which kept his flight tentative which is most unfortunate as his flying was so good in the preliminaries. So many new friends made and old friends renewed. We will see you again Tuny! Some pictures from the teams if legible.
