The V-stab detail. Normally I put the "rivets" on before I apply the panel. Forgot this time. creates a problem pressing down on soft foam. Plus the tail is not glassed, just sealed.

The vstab details.

One side was detailed with line and rivets after alum panels applied (forgot to do it before) the other detail before, and is better and easier. Especially on a foam surface not glassed just covered with wall patch.

The other side. Cleaner. Rivets before applied.

Unfortunately the H stab will block most of the V stab. . Will have to detail the H stab I guess. Next the rudder "piano hinge" detail and a few clean ups, then into molding.

Re size your pictures down to 1500 pixels in photoshop or similar program and you will be able to download dozens at a time. FYI

Great job on the plug work!

Ok.

I'll try that. I'm not so computer literate. I feel accomplished every time I get a pic to post here.

Thanks

Into the boards.

Simple and clean. The goal of the molds is to get a composite model that flies very well. This air frame will be our (maybe?) 15th all composite air frame over the 20 plus years of doing this on occasion.

The creature is a pokemon creature my kid made out of clay. it will be the first test pilot.

That really looks good!
My F-104 based on the Thorp design has a 33" span, so that would make it 1/8th scale. Guess I can't use your tip tanks. Mine will be the only model F-104C ever made in history! Every model I have ever seen is a "G" with the bigger rudder.

Hi Scale Dail

Thanks, it's coming along.

Mine has actually turned out to be 69.5" from nose cone tail stinger. For the 104's I have noticed wing size is not a good indicator of the scale size.

The Thorp Bro F-104 stand off scale plans I have, show the fuse at 71.5", measured at the same points, still impressive for what it is. From what I remember from the pics you posted, your glass one looked good.

Doing some quick research, I read that the "G" is the larger Vstab version of the "C".

The advantage of having molds of the model gives you many options and versions of the same air frame. And of course making the model everlasting.

If you recall, around a year ago, I offered you the deal/opportunity to have us mold your model at no cost to you. This would have given you the opportunity to participate and see how to mold things. This, in turn would result in not having to risk the "only model F104C ever made in history".

Steve

Ha Ha!
Now what about scale landing gear? Any thought of adding the leading edge flaps? I was thinking of doing that with mine, copying a Larry Wolf design from his Panther.

Actually, as of 12/1/12 a post at RCG in the Fuel Jet section says someone has purchased the rights to produce the Thorjet line again.

The LE flaps will be on my composite wing and not the foam test wing. It will also have air brakes on the fuse. I have a few composite variable cone tail feathers as well. . We'll what those do for performance other than a cool factor.

The gear, I'll figure something out to look good and work. Especially with the electric systems out today. Might even use rotators some how. I will make a scale urethane wheel hub though.

Finally got my surface coat on. The mold as you can see is a simple configuration. This method results in a perfectly aligned flying fuse.

The mold will be clamped together with 'C' clamps and quick release type clamps.

Of course the real challenge is getting something out of the molds that flies.

Flies well, I mean.

Note that the boards were not covered with the surface coat. I ran out of the surface coat. It will not impact the integrity of the mold once reinforced with glass. Except for color, unless resin is tinted to match.

Typical mold.

Using parting boards flip side to support glass 1/2 mold while other half is being molded.

Hard to see in pics but I have packing tape along the edge of the 1st mold 1/2 so 2nd mold 1/2does not bond to untrimmed pieces of glass.
can't really wax the loose excess glass.

Also the tape will aide in splitting mold for 1st time.

The untrimmed uncleaned molds 5 minutes old. The intakes will have an insert.

To my surprise the plug survived very well for being all foam. Thanks to wax and PVA

First fuse. made out of polyester resin (junk) since it will be the test drone for CG, throws, bulkhead shapes and locations.

We will sling shot the first one, then power it up.

My other fuses will be epoxy.

Since I don't color or paint in the mold so i can see how my bulkheads fit and bond, I primed one side to make it easier to see for the pic.

Not cleaned or trimmed much, but you get the idea.

Thanks wyo.

Hey wyo. Do you know the difference between the 2012 Proset 145/226 and the 2013 Proset resins. I know as of today (tried it) that Proset 145/226 is very brittle unless post cured.

CST (CTS?) was blowing out the 2012 formula cheap at the ontario show and I grabbed a bit. Not happy with it though.

The wood. CNC cut by a compucarve that I don't really know how to use yet.

The final vert stab supports will get lightening slots as well.

test fitting the wood parts.

And variable tail cone. About an inch too small in diameter. I will have to enlarge it so it looks right.
