Not to side track anyone's conversation here but I had to add some tank humor my 6 year old son told me the other day.

He has a HL Tiger that we went over with a heavy black wash then added some rust in areas. I then showed him how to make round holes in the tank to make it look like it had seen battle. We also melted some of the track fenders to make them look like they had been bumped into or gouged by track debris.

After we had finished with it we went out back to play with his Tiger and my Sherman. I had already made mine look like it was in the dirt for a while, black wash, and some small rust stains from gas and what not.

A few weeks of playing around he turns to me and asked if we could make the Sherman look like it had seen battle too. I told him we did but he corrected me. "No, I mean, can we make it look like the Tiger shot at it?" To that I replied, "Well son.....If your Tiger were to fire on my Sherman there would be no turrett, tracks, or crew left." I like it too much to do that.

Then we had a 10 minute discussion on how it took at least 4 Shermans to take out one Tiger. Kids.

Know what ya mean Alex, 'cept the one I'm trying to explain things to is 30 years old, and probably has even LESS of a clue, as he doesn't even play tanker games on his game system (its the one with the Kinect system)

But I've got other things on my mind (like finally retiring AGAIN... and staying well enough until I do) so I don't sweat it, if he's curious enough, he knows where to find Google & Wikipedia.

It was very cool. Free to look at them and only $5 to walk ( crawl ) through the B 17. You could go up in the B 25 for a short flight, but I could not afford that...

There were several Navy planes and an old Dodge Army truck. My son had to buy a 50 cal. bullet from the souveneer stand.

Do ya knowq if that B25 Mitchell was used in " Catch 22 " or not? I remember it because they scavenged all over the US to get so many actual fliers... and one they could burn in a simulated crash. Yea guys, that take-off at dawn shot wasn't edited... all those planes were ~real~. And they had a cameraman fall out of one of 'em and die.

I was sent an epoxy dupe of a .50 round once... with actual links from a belt. Thinking I could get a few disarmed ones locally, I sent it away, and now I canna get a replacement. And with the way the border is, heck, I doubt I'd even get a duplicate accross, epoxy, metal or play-doh!

Some people don't realise how big one is... compared to 7.62 NATO or a simple .45 or .38 handgun round.

Got any more pics of the truck?

Just this one.

Oh, and it's in the background in this one.

The B 17 had 55 bombs and 2 movie cameras painted on the side, the B 25 had no bombs or cameras painted on it... Makes me think the B 17 has been through 55 missions and 2 movies. The B 25 had the island of Corsica in it's nose art, thats in the area Catch - 22 took place. I did not think to ask, and the B 25 was airborne most of the time we were there.

The B 25 landed while we were inside the B 17, the rumble and vibration those big motors made as it taxied to the apron made my son think the plane we were in was taking off. He was in the bomb bay at the time and so freeked out that I was afraid he was going to jump to the ground through the bomb bay doors. I calmed him down by having him hold the 50 cal. for a picture. Here he is trying to cowboy up and be brave.

I've been a big military aviation fan myself since I was a teenager .....
I supposed you guys must own the serie " Dogfight " ....

Here's a thrick question :
Has anibody ever attempted to replace the " Allison " engines on the P-38 lightning by Royce-rolls Merlin ...???
The switch over did wonders for the P-51 Mustang ; and I believe that the P-38 airframe was even more aerodynamic than the high performance Dehavilland " Mosquito " ?????

I don't know about the P-38, but I understand that conversion was considered for the P-40. However, it was determined that the design of the P-40 airframe wouldn't handle the increase in power and could "fly it's wings off". Perhaps that's the same consideration on the P-38. But I agree, that is an interesting idea.

I didn't know about the P-40 , but you have a good point about the airframe ; It has something to do with the overall performance of the airplane as much as the engine ...
For example , when Chuck Yeager was asked what was so special about the P-51 Mustang ; his reply was : " It would do for 8 hours what the Spitfire would do for 45 minutes " ...
The obvious difference between those airplanes was the airframe and the wings design ....

Guys...

I looked up the specs on the P38's Allisons, and the Mosquito Merlins, and here are the specs that Wiki couched up (both quote Janes' references)...

the Mosquito F (fighter) Mk II used 2x Rolls-Royce Merlin 21/21 or 23/23 (left/right) liquid-cooled V12 engines, 1,480 hp (1,103 kW) each ; take-off weight 17,700 lb // 8,028 kg
[*[ the Mosquito B (bomber) Mk XIV used 2 × Rolls-Royce Merlin 76/77 (left/right) liquid-cooled V12 engines, 1,710 hp (1,280 kW) each ; take-off weight 18,100 lb // 8,210 kg
the P-38L-5 (most common sub-variant of most-common variant) used 2x Allison V-1710-111/113 liquid-cooled V12 piston engines, 1,725 hp (1,194 kW) each ; take-off weight 17,500 lb // 7,940 kg

Bottom line, the Merlins probably wouldn't have increased the speed, based on raw horsepower and loaded weight (not empty or max weight)

Wonder what these engines would have done to Shermans and Pershings... VROOM! The Ford GAA was only rated 450 hp... then again, it was originally designed as a V12 to compete with the Merlin, but the Us Navy wanted radials, so Ford lopped off 4 cylinders, and the GAA was born. They did make a V12 version, the GAC, that powered the T29 prototype (it spat out 770 hp)

I love airplanes too........I have built many of them..........then I switched to tanks.

I finaly got a chance to pry the 50 cal bullet out of my son's hand, he sleeps with it, to show for comparason to some common objects. It scales out like a navy gun or rail gun.

Pah, that's funny. I was at the gun shop yesterday picking up a BUIS for the Ar and they have the 50 cal round sitting there for display. Absolutely do not want to be on the business end of that thing!

Hi Guys
12.7mm X 16 = 203.2mm, say 8 inch, though it looks bigger than that, in comparison? I recall reading that german armour did not appreciate NGS (Naval Gunfire Support) around Normandy, apparently 15 & 16 inch shells can really ruin your day & flip your tank.
