Hi Adrian,

Any news of an electric version of the Aiolos?

Regards,

Jayjay

No idea

I hope they make an electric version. I jumped to the dark side (electric) last year although I still have my glow Neptuno.

Ok, you want a build thread, here it is.

The wing & stabs' servo installation are done. Instead of using the horns/ rod ends/ clevises that came with the plane, I chose to use my own parts from Japan. I must stress that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the supplied hardware. As a matter of fact, they are equally as good. However, I'm just used to the one that I've been working with.

The wing installation is very straight forward, but the stabs are slightly tricky. Since I couldn't find any opening inside the stab for the servo lead to go through to the exit hole to connect to the extension lead, I have to cut one myself. Not a big deal, just require some thinking. In order for the elevator push rod to line up properly with the horn, I raised the servo slightly by installing two pieces of 1/16 light ply at both ends between the servo & the mounting bracket.

Next step, the fuse ...

Adrian,

Looks like a one-piece wing. These are kinda PITA. Mr Naruke certainly has the skill to build a two-piece, one piece wing. It doesn't have to be heavy to work either. Might be easier on the shipping from Japan. Or, not

Matt,

Most Japanese glow designer likes one piece wing. Personally, I like them more than two piece wing. Ever since I've started flying Naruke & Akiba designs 5 years ago, it was nothing but one piece wing. However, the Naruke E Asyuler do come in a two piece wing though.

Except for some minor details, the plane is pretty much done. It took me a little over two weeks on the installation, probably my all time record. AUW is 4,990 g, a bit heavier than I would like to. However, the 20.5 x 10.5 WPN prop along weighs 190 g. Therefore, I can reduce the weight by using a lesser prop - the 20.5 x 10 PN - 170 g. In addition, I can switch from a ni-mh to a li-po instead. Even though, there are a few things that the plane needs to be improved on. But in general, the installation process was a very straight forward & enjoyable one. Since I will be busy for awhile, I probably will not be able to do a test flight for another two weeks. Stay tuned ...

I got a chance to see Adrian's new Aiolos at the flying field. It was picture day, hadn't been flown yet. Beautiful plane and Adrian's radio installation was very neat. Will be interesting to see how it flies. It is obviously a derivation of the Asyuler so it will probably fly very well.

Congrats Adrian that is an awesome looking machine and it must fly better than it looks..!! we will be looking forward to your test flight report and on how the 175 runs.

Unfortunately, I've been busy with personal things for the past few months. Also, had to finish a few other projects for World Models for display at the Ontario AMA convention a week ago. And now, our rainy season has finally started. Therefore, I'm hoping I will get to testing the plane in the next two weeks. Really looking forward to it.

After eight months of procrastination, I finally muster up enough courage to test the Aiolos ... . On a late Friday afternoon, under the watchful eyes of both my father & Derek Koopowitz, I took the plane for a test drive.

I didn't get to the field until 5, therefore, I only had time for one flight. Since I have previously spent two days & 1-1/2 gallon of fuel on the test stand to get to know the engine, the 175 cdi fire up without hesitation & drama, all it takes were some minor fine tuning on the pump to get the engine to run flawlessly. I have selected the Rimfire VR-2 spark plug instead of the stock YS plug, with Coolpower 30% & APC 20x10.5 PN prop. It idles at about 1,450 & about 7,250 at the top with a slightly rich setting. After I have a few more flights on the engine, I'm planning to switch to a 20.5x10 PN.

Initial flight needed quite a bit of down ele trim, but just two clicks of right ail. Since I have reinforced the landing gear plate section, & with a cdi unit up front, I dialed in a bit more positive wing - about 0.75 degree - than necessary. Even though, with some down trim, the plane tracks real nicely, with solid inside & outside loops. Landing was totally uneventful with the airbrake deployed.

Saturday & Sunday will be devoted to flight trimming.

More to follow ...

Adrian

Since the plane have a one piece wing, I can only change the wing incidence by adjusting the adjustment screw on the stab. I spent the next few flights increasing the stab incidence by turning the adjustment screw one turn at a time. By the 4th flight, the ele are flushed with the stab. After the 5th flight, I'm now carrying about 2% up ele with both rud on KE, about 3% down ele with off thr, & 2% right ail with off thr as well.

In between trimming, I flew the P sequence three times & a few of the KE & 45 degrees up line snaps on the F sequence. Even though, it still needs some fine tuning on snap throws, but it's getting close. I'm planning on putting it through the complete F sequence tomorrow to see how it reacts to the rest of the maneuvers. In particular, the rolling 8 & the knife edge loop.

One thing I have notice, the 175 is a scary monster. It even has more mid range grunt than the 170, & you hardly need to open more than half throttle to get through the P sequence. I will probably try the 20.5x10 PN tomorrow to see the difference.

Gday Adrian,

Just wondering what is the capacity of your fuel tank.......and how much airborne time with YS175.....

MANY THANKS

G'day mate,

I'm using a K&S 600 cc tank, with about 14 minutes flying time.

Since I'm still running the 175 on the rich side, with regular 30% heli fuel on 23% oil instead of the low oil content fuel, I doubt I'll be getting a much longer flight time. Even though, the 175 cdi requires less throttle to achieve that mid range sweet spot, but the more powerful engine will definitely consume a bit more fuel than the 170 cdi. However, I'll be switching to a 20.5x10 prop soon to see whether there will be any difference.

Hello

I did about ten flights with APC 20x10,5 PN on 175 CDI (with 9 % oil, 25 % nitro plane is very clean after flights).
So i think it's too powerfull and I would try another prop.

Please What is difference between W and WPN :
LP21010W 21x10W
LP21010WPN 21x10WPN

Claude

Claude,

I think the Blade on the WPN props look similar to a butter knife.

thanks,
Chris

Please What is difference between W and WPN :
LP21010W 21x10W
LP21010WPN 21x10WPN

The W is just a wide blade with the normal APC prop shape. The WPN has a different shape, see attached pix, same as the 18.5x12 WPN we used to use a few years ago when the 170 first came out.

I have a 20.5x10.5 WPN I'm also planning to try, but it's extremely heavy, about 190g, if I remember correctly.

Adrian,

You may consider using a 3 bladed carbon prop to get weight down and still extract engine power.

Another possibility, laminate a wood electric prop with carbon for the 175. My 20x10 wood carbon hybrid weighs about 75 grams. A 20x10 will probably not be enough prop for the 175....I am using mine on the OS33GT gas engine and am getting way too many rpms, 7950; rather noisy. I also have a 20x12 and 20x13 in the works for the 33GT, same construction, wood-carbon hybrid. Both of these will weigh less than 90 grams....Just another approach

Hi Matt,

How are you, thx for your suggestion.

Any chances that you will make an appearance in the Bay Area this year?

Adrian,

I don't think so although I'd love to.

You know you are going to love the extra power. When I first started to fly the DLE55cc gas engine in a pattern type, the extra power was scary. It took about a dozen flights to get used to it. Once I got used to it I wondered why I would ever build anything without that much power..... My new design, Delta, is set-up around the DLE55 and 21x12 3 blade of my own design or the Mezjlik 20x12 3 blade
