I am sure that at least some of you have heard about world of tanks and online game - does any one on the forum play it? What do you think about it?  The Tank Museum may be partnering with them for mutual advantage, but we know nothing about them and we would like some imput from those that would know - anything will help.  At this point I have more questions then answers and want to be a bit intelligent when talking to them, any help would be appreciated.  The most important question is does it cost something to play?

This game has consumed my life.   It is free to play, but you can purchase a premium account and/or purchase gold to buy premium tanks and/or ammo.   Buying a premium account earns you more experience and credits per battle so you can level up quicker.  You can buy gold with real $$$ and use that gold to either purchase premium ammo, premium tanks (typically earn more experience/credits per battle), level up your crew training, convert experience, buy upgraded consumables, buy additional bays in your garage, or convert gold into credits.  There are other uses for gold, but I've covered most of the major ones.

This game is what got me into RC tanks, by falling into love with all the various models.  There is a major market for WOT to pair up with an RC tank vendor to capitalize on the tank-loving community.

The game uses a bit-torrent client to quickly propogate updates.  Some have complained about it containing spyware, but I fully believe this is of little concern.

I've played the game in beta and since it went live, and have accumulated the following tanks using my non-premium account:

US T-29
US Wolverine
USSR SU-85
USSR T34
Ger Stug III
Ger Jagdpanther
Ger Panzer IV

I just recently bought the Premium tank Ger Lowe as at the tank tier I'm at, free credits earned with the other tanks wasn't enough to do the grind.

I'll be happy to answer any other questions you have.

Thanks for the info - I may have future questions once we get into talks - my concern was the cost factor and if the game was worth it - I do not want to put the Tank Museum in a position where we may advertise or partner with them and then find out that it was unsatisfactory to those that may  join due to us, poor customer service.

My only complaints is the lag I seem to get just about anytime I try and play now. I was a player when it was in beta testing and it never was that bad as it is now. I have almost given up the game.

I really do not like at all having to fighting cold war and prototype tanks in what could be a awesome WW2 tank game.

If it was Sherman vs T34 vs PzIV and IS vs Pershing vs Tiger 1, the playing field would be much more equal and more of a test of skill.

A Great Platform to introduce those not already "into" tanks get a taste of the action & historical learning & fun factor to boot
being competive by nature W.O.T should carry/include a Warning Message

Since WOT have offered reduced price to purchase the German Premium Heavy Lowe Tank other players refer to them a Cashies (not in the postitive)
Strategy & Team Play is the key victory

Would like to see RCU create own Clan & spread the word

Cheers for now

I love this game, have been playing since CBT. As others have mentioned this game has made me look at getting into RC tanks now (tried every thing else), all i want now is a 1/6 jagdpanther.

I forgot to add that buying a premium account is not permanent.......you buy 1,3, or 7 day, or a month subscription of premium.

I have bought games that have a one-time purchase fee, such as MechWarrior or the Battefield series.  I would never pay an annual subscription to a game like WOW or EverCrack.

WOT is the first game in probably 10 years of gaming that I've ever shelled out $$ for an actual subscription. I paid somewhere around 50 bucks to buy enough gold to buy a Lowe. I still have 3000 gold left, most of which I'll use to buy a premium account when WOT has specials such as tommorrow's X2 credit earnings for certain tanks.

Giving buyers in-game gold for purchasing an RC tank or giving a discount on an RC tank for purchasing gold in WOT sounds like a very attractive offer.

You're going to have to start carrying cheaper alternatives such as Heng Long or Taigan if you want to appeal to a broader market.

I have played the open beta totalling about 1850 battles, and now I'm playing without buying any virtual money (i.e. absolutely for free), and I'm at about 1300 battles.

The graphic engine is scalable, therefore even on older pc's is playable (my pc is an Athlon 64 single-core).

The most interesting aspect of the game, imho, is the introduction of prototype tanks, including models which never passed the design phase ("paperpanzers"). That adds a lot of interest about the tank world in general.
Each tank has a short biography which is quite interesting too.

I learned about a lot of models I knew nothing about.

The game is a lot of funny, and addictive.
Titles and Medals are earned trough performance achivements.

I mostly play the Russian side, where I tested all branches, from artillery to tank destroyers.

I think that cooperating with them, by putting playing terminals inside the museum, would be a great addiction for visitors.

P.S: my best frag score is 9 kills, earned twice (with KV-1 and SU-85).

Hal:  I am already in communications with someone from the company , but thanks for asking.  So far we have only  been kicking this possible partnership around - It looks like they may set up a game center  for our November event  ( Rc Tank Battles and Indoor Car Show), and if that works there is a possibility of expanding to the Extravaganza next year.   Thanks for all the imput, I knew I could count on many of you to give me an honest appraisal of the game.

Massive overkill;  I do not think that it will go so far as having a game center in the museum on a permanant bases ( good idea though) and it would be attractive to some of our visitors, but I think the cost to set up for internet would out way having the game.
As far as carrying cheaper alternatives like HL, it  is not something we want to do.  I have in the past sold Mato and HL with more hassles then it was worth - Phil at RCtankwars does a great job with these products, I do not know how he does it - opening up every kit, testing them etc, that is quite a bit of time ( labor) that goes into that especially when the mark up or any profit is mim -  I will stick with the tamiya product that has not given me any hassles selling the product in the last 5 years.

Tanks alot

Been playing the game for a little while now.  Only thing I really don't like is that it requires root (ie, administrator) access to play.  So, I keep a close eye on my computer just in case.  No issues yet, but I'd prefer that it not need root access.

I don't think you would actually have to host a game center to take advantage of the marketing/sales opportunities.  Simply advertising discounts from each side or bundles such as:
Buy a Tamiya tank and get $10 worth of gold on to use in WOT, or buy $90 worth of gold at WOT and get $20 off a Tamiya Tank at The Tank Museum.

I can appreciate your views on the cheaper tanks.  I can see why Phil charges a little more.........you have to cannibalize 10 tanks to get 7 good ones.  Still it would be nice to see at least a middle-road option. Right now you have super cheap and super expensive.

I just started playing this game last weekend, what a blast, very addicting. Although my time at playing is limited (remember I have a 10 1/2 month old son) it is a fun game.

Cheers,
Wade

I am in the UK and have played this game since mid Beta times. It is incredible fun. As regards Wargaming.net, they are a bona-fide company and 'big', you need not have any worries about their credentials. They are in the Guiness Book of Records as having the most players online at one time, it was around 125,000 late last year, which just shows how popular the game is. It is now split between European servers and US servers, to ensure lag times are minimised, though I have never had a problem with that.

The game is indeed free to play, though the lessons learned during Beta allowed me to play the game for when it went live, and still make good progress. Eg I have never bought any gold, and yet still have a VK3601H, fully kitted out and elite status, a Panzer III fully kitted out and elite status, plus I am almost within sight of an IS3, having to grind through the horrible KV's to get there.

All told including beta I probably have around 10,000 battles under my belt...though I don't play nowadays as much as I used to, but its a great way to spend a couple of idle hours most days.

Interestingly they use original engineers drawings and have access to military researchers to ensure that the tanks are accurate, both in looks, scale, armour and weaponry. They also include the paper Panzers, prototypes that never saw the battlefield etc. There are some very interesting tanks on the battlefields.

If you haven't played it then give it a try, you have to start off with a puny tank, but you need to start there as without the experience that you will gain in the smaller tanks, you won't last 2 seconds in a big one. Biggest is not always best on the battlefields and I love the P3 as it can scout amazingly well.

Nuff said.

Hi Karen,

The game is quite good. The biggest reason for its popularity is the fact it is free to play. These games always attract more initial users that any other subscription model or one off purchase price. I am Premium user since Beta, buying gold equals a monthly subscription comparable to other games and works quite well.

The game does have it's flaws, quite a few of them actually, but for the most part they are a good way to get people out of the virtual real estate tank into the RC tank. I would recommend a partnership with them. Their stand at the Tank Fest in England was quite busy. Regarding Wargaming they are actually a small company in terms of software houses although they are churning out games based on the same game profile. It would be nice if they actually finished and fixed WOT first but at least World of Battleships looks to be interesting.

Their Guiness book of records is it a bit bogus though. The game is sold as an MMO when in reality it is a simple server based shoot them up not too dissimilar to First Person Shooters. The record was achieved by people logged in through the lobby and not people in one persistent world. If Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 was to post similar user statistics based on people logged in through IWNET then it would most likely exceed that number by a rather large margin.

Hi Karen,

We have talked about WoT at the Danville battle-weekends many times over the past few years. It is a fun game and can be as addictive as crack. I held off for a long time before joining WoT this past spring. It is very realistic and fun. I'm using a laptop via wireless and had many issues with poor internet signals on vacation. My biggest complaint is the enemy tanks disappering off the screen only to re-appear just in time to kill me or when I "Zoom" in to fire. For those just starting WoT, I'm no expert, but here are a few hints. Start on small light tanks... watch, crawl, walk then run. My light Panzer has given me up to 8 kills in one game as the commander (I'm theecommander there). My Locust is one of my favorites. My Lowe and Matilda are very slow but still fun. Play for free or buy some gold or premium account for more action and better ammo and damage repair ability. You can also specialize in SP guns/artilerry (called arty most often).

It may lead WoT tankers some into the RC tank world. But RC tanking is much more fun and interactive. I lacks the quality of player that I have found at IR tank fields all over the USA. I've seen WoT hunt downa nd kill team-mates just because then bumped into them or got the "kill shot". There are some real immature players out there. It would be neat if we could get it set up at the Museum. We can hook up a computer to the large screen TV there at the battlfield but we will need internet access of course. Anything that promotes this hobby and the AAF Tank Mus, I'm 100% in support of doing. Let me know how I can help you and Bill.
