Bought my OS 91 FX yesterday with the bisson muffler.
Still thinking of doing the rudder and elevator mods, because i want a good knife edge performance, so i will probably need it.
What advantages are there with a bigger elevator concernig the low speed habits. I don´t have a big field to land, so I have to fly quite slow on landing.
    What do you recommend...

    Thanks

Moving the hinge line forward makes more of the stab's area control surface. The larger control surface is more effective at lower airspeeds. Think about the .40 size profile 3D planes. The fly super slow with 12.25x3.75 props. They have HUGE elevators with HUGE counterbalances to get more bite on the air at low speeds. This also helps vector thrust from the props thrust tube.

The mods are really easy to do and have no negative effects so why not. I can pull full high rate up elevator at full throttle and it wont high speed stall. It will just do a small radius loop with a lot of tail porpoising.

I saw your mods on page one.
This looks really good for me with the aerod. counterbalances.
    Just for my right understandment.
i don´t put the hinges on the place, like the plan tells, i put it forword, so the rudder surface remains withe the same size, but the effective part grows.....?

    Thanx vry much

The sticks fore and aft of the elevator hinge line are 1/2 wide. I just moved everything forward one line (1/2"). Just look at the pics for how to do the counter balances. Note that I supplied my own spar (longer than stock) that went wing tip to wing tip.

I didn't move the hinge line of the rudder. I made the counterbalance larger and added one inch to the tail of the rudder to increase its area. On the IMAC Extra 300's the rudder counter balance is 1/3 the span of the rudder when measured from the bottom of the fuse to the top of the rudder (yeah, thats big). The counterbalance is that big to reduce servo loading at high speed/extreme throws. The rudder mods are pretty straight forward. It will look weak when framed up bare but it is pretty stiff once covered.

Modified or not this plane needs speed to fly knife-edge. You will also see a big yaw angle (AOA) when in knife edge. Its just a quirk of the plane.

When you get to joining the wing halves have plenty of good clamps handy, use 2 hour epoxy if you can find it as 30min will be starting to kick and get thick before you have everything situated. You have to put the epoxy on A LOT of surfaces BEFORE putting in the wing joiners and 30min epoxy is just too fast. I probably have 2oz of extra epoxy in my wing that I could not wipe off in time.

Save yourself a lot of trouble in the future and glue hard wood doublers over the landing gear rails (1/4x7/8 I think). Attach you gear with 1/4x20 nylon bolts. Tap threads in the rails. The kit screws are an absurd way of attaching the gear.

I have already started my kit, but i am confronted with some problems....
How can i glue the fuse sides to the fuse top. I have to flex the fuse sides using water, but it doesn´t work....

Here is a pic how it looks right now

You have to soak the fuz sides where it bends, just little wet doesn't do it. I held my fuz sides under running water and only getting the side that is to be glued wet, then it worked better. After that I clamped the sides in place for the glue to cure.
Others have soaked the whole side and then taped the fuz sides towards a can of proper sixe to dry over night. When dry the sides have taken the correct shape/form. Best of luck mate,

    Christian

I soaked my fuse sides in a 5 gallon bucket so the water went up to the middle of the wing saddle for ~6 hours. I then wrapped the front of the fuse around a large coffee can secured with a lot of rubber bands and let it dry overnight. The next day fit perfectly to the formers.

Does the GP Extra 300 .60 lend itself to being lightened similar to the way the Funtana airframe is full of holes to save weight? Any options other than replacing the heavy wood in the kit?

    Hello Guys...

It has been very interesting to read about all your experience with the GP Extra 300S.
I am especially lucky to find such a great resource for it because this has been my dream to build this plane since I startet RC-Flying one year back...

My question is now if you would recommend a person to build this kit as the first one??
Is it quite easy if you follow the instructions or is it still quite hard?

Also I would like to now if some of you guys find this plane hard to fly.
My first plane was a Bi-Plane but which flew sort of like a trainer. Right now I have my second plane and that is the Hirobo Skylimbo which is a .40 size Plane with full semitrical wing, so I guess a god plane to get into acrobatic planes.
I am just wondering if I will be able to fly this lovely Extra 300S?

    Many Greetings from
    Kristian

I also have not much flying experience ( Trainer , low wing trainer ) and it is my second kit, and the building seems not to hard, if you have a little experience with wood and glue

Read through this thread on how I reduced weight by an average of 1 1/4 pound. The AVERAGE GP EXTRA 300S .60 weigh 7.75 to 8 pounds....mine weighs 6.5........ GP EXTRA....TOTALLY 3D

Weight reduction is not only in lightening the airframe, but by a better selection of the gear you use on the plane as well.

Another link to the HATCH that I built into mine...... Even with the ADDITION of some items to the fuselage, I still ended up sooooo much lighter than stock........REVIVED

Hey I looked a bit into some engines I would like to put on the plane.
    I was thinking of a super tigre 90 or a Saito FA-100..

I have a couple of questions though:
First of all why is the Super Tigre 90 engine so cheap compared to OS and does it have good power.

And what do you think of a Saito FA-100..read some have used it. Will it let the plane climb straight up from a hover or would it be better with a Saito FA-120 insead of the 100...

I don´t know about you guys but 4 stroke engines just sound sweet so I kind of would like a 4 stroke on this beauty GP Extra 300.

    Maybe you can help me.

    Many Greetings from
    Kristian

Get a ys 1.10 if you want all out power. Ys engines are the best fourstrokes available. My YS 140DZ has more punch than my Saito 180!! I am sure more than a few folks will back me up on the 1.10

I'll back up the YS-110 recommendation. My Extra is 2 years old now. I started with a Saito 100 which has more than adequate power for sport and pattern flying. Then I installed a YS-91 which gave the plane "super-hyperdrive" power. A few weeks ago I mounted up a YS-110 and now my buddies tell me that I've gone "plaid".

At just a few more oz than a Saito 100, the YS-110 has power equivalent to a 120-150 size Saito. And it actually uses less fuel than the Saito 100.

When trimming the formers, did you follow any rule of thumb as to how much to trim? How much is too much???

What big 3 bladed prop with small pitch do you recommend for the OS 91FX so that the Extra flies nice and slow, but with good vertical performance?

@ FirstOfficer: Could you please make a pic of your tailwheel, looks good, where did you get it. Do you also have an new landing gear.
Think of replacing that heavy stock on against a glassfiber one....

    Thanks

I believe first officer got his tailwheel from DPM www.davepatrickmodels.com . Its called the ultimate tailwheel. I have heard nothing but good things about it. As far as the wing skins go, I just used the stock ones and if you are real careful wit the wing, you won't have to worry about damaging them.
