Walt,....cheers for that !...strangely enough i,m this very minute putting the cowl together, havent yet fixed the tank in.. so if a bit of substance is needed behind those cowl screws i'm now one step ahead..! excelent.
Had a couple of new O.S .91's 'in stock' that Mr Claus bought...finally decided to put the FX in the Extra ...leaving the FS all lonesome !.....after hunting all over the bloody country managed to get....yes you guessed it ...a UCD..( she doesent know about this one yet or i'm a dead man ! )
O.K. she's just walked in with a new digital camera so i'd best have a look.. tell you what, i'll try to send some photo's....dont hold your breath though !
thanks !
Dave

Dave, where did you get the kit from? Are they available in the UK again, only I thought Irvine were only bringing in the GP ARTFs.

I also fancy the 60 size extra, but where to get it?!

Cheers Dave. Had looked into Tower but thought that the shipping would be too much from the US. Now I know different... Definately feel a credit card moment coming along .

Must resist though, far too much to do already (two projects to finish, one just started, and a new one arriving next week )

I like the look of the UCD too, but if I started on ARTFs as well as kits, I would soon run out of money and space - tough enough as it is. This hobby is too addictive.

Hi,

I'm on the way to finish my GP Extra 300 and I found this great thread.

I got a few questions answered like the motor choice. I'll go with the Saito 100

But I got a few other questions. I would give a try to Digital servos to see the difference I think it could be a great plane to try it. I checked to use JR 8231. I would use them on my ailerons, ruder and elevator. And I plan to mount the elevator servo in the tail with a 1/8" U wire between the 2 elevators. I also plan to use a pull-pull system for the rudder.

Does anyone have any comment regarding this config. Are the servos too big ? What kind of pull-pull system do you recommend

tks
Thierry

Hey, AdrianM

How about an update! Is it still flying? Still going "knifeedge"

I have few questions to the covering. I am planning to use a two-colour scheme on wing bottom like you did. However, it seems quite difficult. What kind of covering did you use (Ultra or Mono)? How did you connect the pieces (perhaps using a glass-surface)? Did you use a heatgun or iron to shrink the covering over ribs? Will the joints deform when shrinking?

I hope you can answer my questions, and I am looking forward to an update.

Hey tiju,
sound like a pretty good set-up, I used one servo for each elevator half, I'm using Dubro 4-40 pull-pull system for my rudder. The servo I'm using for the rudder has 106oz torque. I'm sure that'll be plenty enough for knife edge manuvers on this 60 size plane. I have everything installed except for the iron on fabric. here's a photo of what color scheme I'm going to use. Anyways, good luck with yours, I hope to get my going before the first spring fly-in next month.

rc-fly - Its going great. I moved the pack way back in the fuse and added 1.5 oz to the tail and it flys even better. I used Chip Hyde's method for setting the CG. Fly an inverted 45 deg upline and move the CG aft until it holds the line. It still needs just touch of down elevator when invert.

GP Extra 300S Mods

Equipped with:
YS90 and electric, lithium powered smoke system.
Wt. 9 pounds.

I really enjoyed this thread and thought some of
my mods might inspire others.

Added flaps
Enlarged rudder
1000 mah battery mounted under pilot
Carbon fiber landing gear
Lined inside of cowl with aluminum foil
Dual pipe exhaust system (no muffler)
Added 2 lower cowl support brackets
Mounted .8oz 340 mah lithium bat in aft belly pan
between wing mount bolts
Mounted 6 oz smoke tank on CG
Smoke pump mounted on firewall
Added flush mounted aileron & flap servos
Added lower engine cowling spoiler
Shaded canopy

Notes: Was not real happy with 9 lbs weight, so
the flaps were added. Smoke pump and battery weigh
4.8 ounces. Carbon fiber landing gear saved 3 oz.

All items were located prior to covering to maintain CG.
Lithium battery is Kokam. A Kokam 5 volt voltage regulator
with 3 red, yellow, green led's was installed to monitor
the lithium battery voltage. Tests show that this battery
should provide power for 2 to 3 flights between charges.

At this time the project is still a work in progress.

Can anyone send me a plan of the modified rudder ?

I would like to enlarge the rudder area by 25% or more, but I am not sure how should I expand the outline of the rudder on the original plan in order to have the plane still balance laterally well.

Our club had a best looking airplane contest at the last meeting.
About 8 to 10 entries, all pretty nice including:
F18 w/Blue Angels detail, Airwolf heli w/retracts, Lear Jet, nice pattern ship, etc.
Dusted off the extra and entered it and won best of show. Two of the competitors
voted for my Extra.
Now we'll see if it flies.

AdrianM,

Great thread, thanks! I built this kit as well, only mods are Elevator tabs, beefed up landing gear rails, and pilot with rotating head off rudder channel. 8lbs 6oz. Will break in the Saito .100 and fly it this june, flying too many others right now. Just wanted to post a pic of another GP Extra...

Hello Bob and Everyone:

I have just finished my Extra 300S. The maiden flight is planned for in the morning if it isn't too windy. The stats are: O.S. 91 fx, the plane weighs 7.9 lbs. and with a 14x6 zinger prop it produces just under 9 lbs. of thrust and the engine is still a little tight. The finish is Monokote. I'll try to post some pictures below.

Regards,

James

Great thread fellas,
Have built wing ,modded rudder etc as suggested.
Have started on fuse.
People have suggested beefing up the landing gear supports.
I epoxied these in at the same time i epoxied the fire wall in place.
Seems to be pretty strong as is .
Have attached pics .
Where and what do you chaps recommend and addition in this area if any ......
Pic of stans cowl too .... yum
cheers torp

Torp: I am with you, went with stock landing gear, waiting to see what others have done to beef it up. I agree, great thread, good to see what others have done with this kit. Am hoping to see cruzmissile's finished product also.

I built my landing gear mounts stock and used 1/4-20 nylon bolts. This worked well but I cracked the ply in a bad landing a few weeks ago. I fitted a piece of 1/4 aircraft ply the width of the stock landing rails from the former where the wing dowels go in to the next former forward...the one the engine box mounts to. I would do this during building if I were to build another kit. Not much weight but a more solid landing gear mount.

Here are some pictures of what I did. I feel that this is a MUCH stronger arrangement. As you can see, I fabricated an all new fuse former and landing gear plate...... The original design was a weak design such that if you land a little too hard, the mounting plates could easily give. The new design that I have done would anly allow for you to either callpse the landing gear or destroy this area of the fuse. The first picture shows the origianl parts, second shows the fabricated parts and the last 2 shows how they are installed........ Oh and BTW, this setup if I remember correctly was a few grams lighter than the original so you can see that the 1/8" light ply former and the 1/4" gear plate weigh about the same as the 2 long 1/4" ply gear plates.

This link goes to the thread that I have going on the mods that I have made..... In a day or 2, I should hopefully have pictures of my STAN's COWL and the COWL RING that I fabricated to mount the cowl instead of using screws through the cowl and into the fuse sides.... Using this ring, I am going to have it set up so that I only have to remove 2 bolts to remove the cowl..... The set up also prevents scuffing up the covering from sliding the cowl on over the fuse sides........ GP EXTRA 300S thread
