Status: offline 		I am also slogging thru this build and appreciate the thread. I had a question about finishing the flap area. With the small rib stubs getting in the way, is it possible to glass this area? Or do you paint it and call it good?

Status: offline 		I just primed that area and sanded it smooth. It would almost be impossible to get glass to lay over those ribs without bubbling up in the corners. To me, that would have looked worse than a little wood grain showing through.

Good tip Fabio, I'll give that a shot.

Status: offline 		Trying to get an idea of where everything is going to go. I have A-123 batteries up front next to the fuel tank, I will build a battery tray so I can secure them in there nicely.

They are going to be powering a Spektrum AR12100 Power Safe Receiver. I'm going to have to locate a spot for the choke servo as one will not fit in the supplied servo tray. The choke will also be how I can cut the engine from the transmitter. I'm running out of channels with my TX.

I was originally thinking about a smoke system, but I may wait to get a few flights on her before I add it.

Status: offline 		Inter cooler doors done.
You guys were right. It is impossible to make them all with the little strip provided.
I cut the four corners out the front of the cowl to have enough plastic to build them.
Primed and ready to go.
Sheeting the fuse next.
I removed the tail gear so that I can start working on the mechanism to open and close the doors.
I will insert the tail gear later since I ran the lines already into the fuse.

Status: offline 		I like how you did your door linkages Fabio, I will try to duplicate your set-up.

I must have the worlds worst luck when it comes to digital servos. I was testing the throttle servo and noticed it buzzing and getting warm just sitting on the bench not hooked up to any linkage or anything. I thought that it was strange so I emailed Airtronics looking for answers. Last night I went back at it and hooked it up to a different reciever and it just quit working all together. Now I have to send it in to see what happened.
All-in-all I have a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to digital servos

I always had good luck with Hitec 5645 and Spektrum 821.
They are reasonably priced and they do the job every time.
That's what I am using in all my warbirds.

Status: offline 		hello everyone.i am new to this tread. i read the trhead and love what you guys are doing with your birds.i have the 60 size p-47 from top flite and just love it.i am now thinking of purchasing the giant scale one .i have a question about glassing the plane. i have seen people use deft lacquer sanding sealer on the wood to protect it.then they use minwax policrylic to lay the fiberglass cloth on the plane is this.does this give a nice finish or should i use z-poxy for the fiberglass and if so do i have to put something on the wood to protect it from absorbing the epoxy.this will be my first attemp at fiberglassing a plane. any advice would be very much appreciated.On an other note redbiscuits thank you for starting this thread i love it.

I have the 60 size as well, I did the poly-c method and have mixed emotions about how it came out. I guess the only benefit of doing it that way is the cleanup, that's it! It takes WAY too many coats of poly to fill the weave and it's harder to sand. Since poly-c is water-based it will also want to swell the wood and may cause the sheeting to bubble up.
I read the thread on finishing with Deft and really seen no benefit, plus that stuff isn't cheap either.

I like the method of thinning the epoxy with alcohol to keep from putting on too much and getting it to flow out. I don't seal the wood with anything either, as I want the glass to have a good bond to the wood.
I'm also starting to think that I may come in under my 24# mark, we'll see...

Status: offline 		I think if you use Redbiscuits recipe 1-1-1 of resin and alcohol it will lay really easy with the brush.
Also I like for the epoxy to get absorbed into the balsa since it makes for a very rigid surface.
Not to worry about glassing....easy process and you can't screw up!
Just follow biscuits directions in the pages before and you will do just fine.

Status: offline 		RE: The supercharger intake. When I ordered my Ziroli plans, I also ordered the engine cowl. I was disappointed that the cowl didn't have the supercharger intake at the bottom. I'm surprised that the TF kit doesn't either, or is it a separate piece?

Status: offline 		Nope EJ, No supercharger intake. I'm assuming by that you are talking about the chin scoop correct?
Aerotech Scale Parts sold out and I don't know where to get one. I would have to buy the replacement cowl from the TF ARF to get the scoop. I wonder if I could get the scoop by itself from Top Flite if I called them?

I can provide you with a vacuum formed intake "splitter" for the larger Ziroli size Jug if that is the one you've got. (Assuming I can still find my plug!) Probably too big for the Top Flite kit I'm afraid. However, I've seen some guys use the top portion of a spare cowl to create the splitter in the TF model. Here's mine in Stephen Lucy's big Robart Jug.

Yep, I have the 92" Ziroli Jug (short kit by Eureka Aircraft Company). I really want to learn how to make fiberglass molds. Now you've given me an idea. Since I have the engine cowl on-hand, I can make a female mold using the top outer half of the cowl.
