Status: offline 		Jimbo here a technique I use on my controls surfaces. It makes a really sharp corner and keeps the dings to a minimum. Glue a piece of 1/64 ply to each end of the control surface.

Makes a really sharp tough edge.

Status: online 		I don't know what was worse, building the flaps or adjusting the linkages and the radio for the flaps. After 3 evenings of fiddling around with it I finally got the radio and the linkages all adjusted and working properly, the flaps coming down and going up evenly, all without any slop or servo buzz.

Status: online 		Well thanks to my forever friend Gary, I can now proceed forward.
Ailerons are done and I am waiting for the filler to dry so that I can separate them and cut the hinge holes.
One question....actually two.

Is it sufficient for the flaps to be glued to the balsa LE just applying glue to the little ribs and the flap skins?
Seems to me that just a 3/32 " gluing surface is insufficient. But then again what do I know?

Also once you shape the flaps, is it possible to put enough glue around the flap horn or it's going to get squeezed out the slot you cut in the balsa once you insert it in?
How did you guy handle that?

Status: online 		Hey, no problem buddy. Glad it showed up so soon.

I followed the instructions but I used Titebond II wood glue for the leading edges of both. For the flap-horn, I used epoxy and then filled the rest of the gap with epoxy mixed with micro balloons once it set up.

Status: online 		I can't remember if I glued in the flap-horn first and then glued the leading edge around it or not, but that kinda sticks out in my mind.

It couldn't have been that way, the leading edge is already shaped by that time. Told you I had a bad memory!

Hello gang,
been out of town working all week so not much progress on my bird.. Yard work in the morning, suppose to be 72 but 30mph winds, good day to send my neighbor his leafs back...lol 
I'm looking forward to getting down in the shop over the weekend and getting the flaps knocked out.. Got good news at work, besides being busy which is always a good thing, the boss told me it was ok to build my plane rack for my shop.. I got full access to all the good stuff, gonna build a real nice mobile rolling rack with all the bells.....

Status: online 		Let the riveting begin!
There is a little bit of a learning curve to using the finish set that I bought. The transfer tape that is provided is good for one row of rivets, "maybe" two. I found it best just to use it once. I use a fresh piece, as it looses its tack quickly and fails to pick-up every rivet or screw. No big deal, as Mirce provided a lot of the tape.
I also found it best to use a tongue depressor to help in the transfer to the tape and to peel the tape back on itself while applying them, using the stick to help them release from the tape as well.
As I said, there is a little bit of a learning curve, but it's getting better as I go.
It's starting to look pretty sweet!

Compared to the iron method, would you say it's a bit faster and easier?
Are the rivets going to stick permanently or lift under the paint eventually?
I am seriously considering it as well if the application time vs my iron is cut down considerably.

On another note, Gary you were right about the flaps......what a pain in the &@"$@$;:.
I am having an issue with mine since they both developed a slight twist on the TE and it's very difficult to align both sides to the fuse and aileron at the same time.
I might have to just split the difference unless you guys have a solution to the twist.
Maybe soacking the flap TE in water and let them dry on a flat surface with some wight on?

Fabio, I think it is faster. It was kind of slow going at first, but once I developed a method that works for me I'm moving right along. It definitely isn't as monotonous as ironing 15,000 rivets, been there done that! I would say once I have paint and clear coat over it they aren't going anywhere, but right now I have to be kind of careful.

I had the same problem with one of my flaps. What I did is soak it with Windex and then weighted it down with sand bags for a couple days. That took most of the twist out of it and it's not noticeable now.

Status: online 		At this point I think it would be easy to "overdue" things. The P47 has flush rivets and I think if I just keep adding rivets it might take away from the look rather than enhance it. I don't like the overdone look, so I think I will try and find a happy medium while capturing the most noticeable details. Some of the panels are a little mis-placed, too late to change it now, I'm done doing bodywork.
What do you guys think?

I think your a very talented builder and it's coming out great, that's what me thinks...


I haven't had any warping problems in my flaps, but I haven't glued on the LE yet..  I am going to use a slow dry wood glue and weight them down flat on the bench while it sets.. I'm wondering if the LE being glued on in two pieces is causing this, there is not much to keep it from happening.. I think I might keep a scrap in the control horn gap while it all dries....

That's probably what is happening.

Heading to the hobby shop to see if I can pickup some stuff to simulate the sliding mechanism.
