The portion of the belly pan that is actually the lower forward fuselage is the main part that gets damaged during a wheels up landing. It is also the area that is most damaged when storing, setting up, and handling the jug. Putting some extra glass on this area is worth it.

Status: offline 		I've made a few wheel up landings with my 63" jug. I reinforced the belly pane after the first wheel up landing, If you put it donw wasy it's just a paint touch-up.

Status: offline 		Thanks, I buildt it in 1996, must have about a 100 flight on it. If the GS flies as good it will be a blast to fly it also. That picture was taken at War Birds over the Rockies in 2009. That it a great place to all kind of Military aircraft fly.

nice looking bird for sure and the picture is really cool..


Got the foam sanded down and it worked out great, the dowel bay is nice and solid now..  Besides some filler, the wing is as far as I can go...
I have some more work on the fuse that can be done, so I'm flipping back to it... One thing I don't like is this joint (pic 2), so I strapped it with some light ply that was left in the former sheets. The one forward of F2 gets a crutch doubler on the inside, but I will back up the outside with a strap as well. Looking at things a little closer, I can sheet a good part of the bottom and still have room to install the tailwheel...

  Why not right...  You can add a lot of strength to them when your building it and not much extra weight, well worth it in my book.....

Good man "redbiscuits",

It is not a secret that inceasing the binding area of glue joints considerably increase the strength.

I double glue all the joints creating a fillet using aliphatic glue. The weight increase is negligeable.
An 11 lbs model has less than 4 weight ounces of glue for its complete construction.

Triangular stock at highly stressed locations is very valuale like at the firewall and landing gear attachments.

Enjoy a well built model.

where your exhaust goes through the firewall, what did you seal that up with? I plan on making a scale exhaust. as well....   10-4 on the blocking for the dowels.

Excellent point. I might use a bit of ply in that area. A couple of weeks ago a spitfire bellied in on the repaired edge of the runway where the gravel is. It mangled up that spot on the fuse just forward of the wing (right where you were talking about). It caved in almost all the sheeting there.

I also beefed up the dowel supports in the fuse, used a 1/4" ply plate all the way across, dowel to dowel. I'm getting kind of anxious to get back on the jug. I just have to finish up two planes first for next year.

Status: offline 		Any high temp epoxy will work, I think I used JBWeld., But I plan on running a piece of exhaust silcone tube inside the aluminum tube to keep the heat in check. plus there is plenty of airflow through that area. If you look at this photo I have a functionable oil cooler doors and a hole through the front bulkhead for air to exit. I plane on having the cowel flaps and oil cooler doors operated by an Oregon Scale controller. This will regulate the engine temp automaticly, this keep the engine in a desirable heat range and takes a small load off me while flying. I hope it ensure consistance engine runs.

I got it from Nitro Planes Jimbo, It's the CMP L-39. I'm still shopping for all the parts and looking to power it on an 8S setup.

that is pretty awesome, very neat... I haven't decided how crazy I will get with mine, was thinking if i still need weight in the nose, I will do the working cowl flaps...

Once upon a time not long ago, there lived a man. Not a super smart man, but a man on vacation all this week who spent some time in his shop.....


Well thank you to Gary for bringing up Tri-stock, I ripped 60" of it yesterday on the bandsaw and went to town. I was like a little kid with his erector set, cutting, sanding, fitting and giggling while i mixed batch after batch of epoxy....

One part that really caught my eye is bulkhead 4-4B, this is where the wing hold down blocks are.. The only thing holding that in is two 1" butt glue joints and the sheeting. (pic 1). I decided to strap it with 1/8" and back it up with T.S., I will also add tri to the front side below the wing blocks when I glue them in.. It just looked kind of weak to me in this area, so why not... Still have to do some more tri stock around the firewall on the bottom and a few other spots. The result should be a super strong structure that holds up well for a long time to come.... You da man Gary!

You hit probably every spot that I did with tri-stock. It doesn't add much weight, but sure adds a LOT of strength. Your going to need it too with that ass hauling engine you're strapping on the front.

I'm not taking any chances with it as you can tell..lol   I think the only other thing i will do is change the motor mount plate to better ply, pin it and wrap the whole box with glass..  


What's the going rate on weight on this plane? I'm not building it light so to say, but It's not a lead sled either...  Is it a far stretch to shoot for 25-26 pound range?

Status: offline 		From what I have seen/read anywhere from 22lbs to over 30lbs depending on what you put in it. Mine weighs 24lbs right now with out the reciever, batteries, a couple of servos, fuel tanks and maybe a couple of small items. So I would say about 28 to 29 for mine with fuel and smoke ready to fly.

I have a different view on warbird weight, IMHO a warbird that is heaver looks better flying than a lighter one. They just seam to have that sink rate they need. Mostly I am just a little wiered. Anyway my 63" TF P-47 weight 13#s and flies great, slows down with the flaps, It's no aerobatict bird by no means, but it does the nicest victory roll.

Status: offline 		Beffing up is done for now, I pretty much added TS to all the structure that I could, it sure is beefy.. 

Not sure if i am alone on this, but I like to mock up the plane as I go, just for the motivational push..lol



Ron's pics has me thinking about the exhaust and how i will go about the task.. The motor I am using doesn't have a wrap around out for it, so it will be a total custom exhaust. The dealer I am going with just so happens to specialize in canisters... so I am hoping he can help me is this department..

Well tell the little guy a big Happy BirthDay and have a fun party.. With the eats you got, it should be fun..... 
My daughter is in choir and we have a dinner and performance thing to go to, in-laws are coming to town today for it. Should be a fun night, they are doing all Christmas songs and the food is suppose to be top notch...

The work bench top is viynl flooring I had left from a job, makes for a great top and if they get messed up, I just pull out the plank and put in a new one...  thanks for the kind words, can't wait till mine looks as good as yours.......

I ordered my cockpit and canopy yesterday, need to get the CP installed so i can finish up where I am putting my control rod tubes.. I just went with the TopFlite one, like others have said, once the pilot is in and canopy is on, you don't see much of it...

Does anyone know if Areotech models went out of bizz? I was planning on getting my drop tanks and pylons from them, their website is no longer.... Does anyone have another place to get the scale stuff from?

Yep, Aerotech went out of business. I may build my own pylons and drop tanks later down the road from 3 views. I'll get the maiden out of the way first.
