Gary,

Questions on the liquid mask, please. Did you spray it on (as suggested by the manufacturer) or brush it on? What tool did you score it with to remove the squares? Looks like you removed the unwanted squares in the pic in post #1294.

I bought some liquid mask about two years ago and tried it on a test set-up I made with plastic window material. My first concern was how to remove the mask after I paint. What I ended-up doing was making folded-over tabs out of 3M Safe-Realease painters masking tape. I placed a couple of the tabs on the window surface and then sprayed-on the liquid mask. After painting, I was able to pull the tabs away from the window and worked the liquid mask off from the inside of the window area outward instead of the other way around. This way I did not have to pick at the outside edges of the painted area and risk chipping the paint. Worked well. Just another approach.

Can't wait to see your results with the cowl.

I brushed it on in several coats and ended up using the whole bottle. I cut the mask with a good X-acto knife and lightly picked the edge up with a dull one.

Let me tell ya'll what is going on over here, I know you're wondering what's taking so long. The liquid mask is very thin and rubbery. I started on the bottom of the cowl removing the mask and the paint didn't want to leave a clean edge. Not sure what the problem is, the only thing that is different from the other masking and painting on the plane is the liquid mask. It has turned into a freakin rescue mission.

So, as I move around the cowl from bottom to top, I have figured out that I have to score the paint with a sharp blade to break the tension between the masked area and the unmasked area, it's also helping if I wet sand around the masked area before trying to remove the mask. HUGE PITA going on over here I'm sorry to report.

Since I'm going for that "in service look" I think it will be okay, if this was an aerobatic scale or sport plane, I would have scrapped it already.

Give me a couple more days and I'll let ya'll be the judge.

Thats a bummer Gary,
I am sure it will come out just fine. That is one of the down sides to letting the paint fully set before removing the mask. The tension of the paint is more than the tension of the mask.

Can't wait to see the unvailing.

Gary, I too am going for the “In Use” look and I want imperfections, my plane is beat up and heavily weathered. . These are birds of war not Red Bull show planes. I think it will turn out perfect in the end, chin up buddy.

Well, I have all the mask off, the more I went, the better it got. Tell you the truth it's kind of growing on me. Should look okay with a little touch-ups here and there, then closing one eye and standing ten feet away.

Without a doubt the hardest, most nerve racking thing I had to do on this build.

Getting the radial installed. Next up, finish the canopy. Still waiting on my pilot's jacket to get here too...
I think I need a break, might head to the field tomorrow and bore some holes through the sky. Sunday I'll get on the canopy.

Outstanding results on the cowl! Outstanding. Trust me, this is a great representation of "in service" which means "authentic". If it came out with perfect, and I mean *perfect* lines (crisp, sharp) it would have been in conflict with the panel lines and rivets.

Its a combat horse, not a prancing dressage horse.

Gary, I see you are using cowl screws. I have a tip if you haven’t already done this (I know you really need more work to do). Take a piece of sheet tin and cut some small squares about the size of the cowl blocks. Glue them into the inside of the cowl with epoxy. Then drill them out from the holes you already have. This keeps the fiberglass or plastic from wallowing out. You can get the tin at Home Depot in the roofing department, the little round disks for roofing. See you later at the field.

It's going to look good when everything is weathered up EJ, I'm not too concerned that some of the edges didn't come out perfect, you have to really get up close to even notice.

Quick story....
My step-daughters new boyfriend came over last night for dinner, and my hobby came up over dinner (as it usually does) I asked him if he has ever tried flying an rc airplane before, he said that he doesn't really play with "toys" anymore. After dinner I said "come on, let me show you my toy airplane"
His jaw about hit the floor, he said he would definitely like to play with a toy like that!

Only getting one day off this week, so no hobby shop today, I will pic them up next weekend and get them installed.. I also ordered my glass parts from Fiberglass Specialties today, got the cowl, supercharger and cooler doors.. My shipping came out to $16.25, isn't that what you paid for shipping the little chin block for the cowl...

Great Job as usual Gary, wonder why I am not surprised anymore, you are a true modeler!

Little progress from here in eastern Siberia.
The weather the last couple of weeks hardly went above freezing. To shoot primer on the wing in my garage I had to borrow a torpedo heater from work. What a pain in the #$%^
Gary if you don't know what a torpedo heater is, since there is always 80 and sunny, I can send you some pictures....

Anyway I was able with a lot of cussing and patience to prime the wing and it is now ready for chart tape and lines.
Hopefully by the end of this week if the weather behaves I should have the lines all primed up.

Last evening I got bored from the lack of progress on my build that I decided to put together the TF cockpit.
No scale effort here, just some color and switches to keep the kids at the field looking at something.
Most of the cockpit work is always hidden so no sense in getting carried away.

Gary I will trade you my Robart wheels if you can send this way a couple of weeks of your weather.......

Fabio, you're WAY too modest, that is one of the best looking TF CP kits I've seen. Now, if you want to see what "no effort" is, I'll post some pics of mine!

BTW, I spent about 8 years in Ft. Wayne, Indiana in my late teens and 20's, We didn't have a torpedo, but we had a big ole kero heater.

hello i have been following the tread for a couple of months and all i have to say is wow.i have a question for redbiscuits.what primer did you use on your plane before the panel line were applied and after the panel lines were aplied did you use klass kote primer before spraying the color.i am new at this and if anyone can help in the steps following the glassing i would much apreciate it Thanks
