Hi All,

About 35 years ago, my father returned from a tour of duty in Japan.. he brought home with him three WWII control line model airplane kits he purchased while over there.  The models were never completed, and he has long since passed away.  I found two of the three tiny glow engines that came with those models.  They have never been run, not once in the 3+ decades I've had them.  Wondering if anyone here can help me identify the engines, and tell me a little about them - parts availability (muffler, etc..)  I'm attaching a couple of pictures of them.  I've never tinkered with glow engines.  Any and all knowledge you guys can share would be great.

I think it would a nice tribute to my Dad, if my kids and I used these motors in a build.

Cast into the side of the head is "ENYA 09".  On the back of the crank housing is "Made in Japan".

Thanks!
Jon

These are 1/2 A control line engines.  The planes would be in the 25-35" wingspan range.  They did not have mufflers.  You may be able to find small strap-on mufflers.  Nice little engines.

These are terrific little engines...very powerful for their size and they will swing larger props than most of that size. For someone who flys small CL planes they can't be beat.

There is a guy on ebay who sells lots of Enya parts and I'm sure you can get a muffler from him. Occasionally someone gets rid of a used one too. You need the muffler...even on an 8x4 prop, this engine is LOUD without one.

You must have a fuel with a lot of castor oil, preferably all castor, 20 - 25% oil. I'm pretty sure Sig Champion is OK too, which has half castor half synthetic.

There is a specific break-in procedure for these old iron-pistoned engines that you would do well to follow. Briefly, they need to be run rich at intervals and allowed to cool down in between. Search the threads for this, or maybe someone here can give a link.

Check this out:

http://www.enya-engine.com/ListCL_E.html

There's two .09s listed - a plain bearing and a 2BB. Both are old, lapped steel baffle piston designs. And they're still available for sale, and don't cost very much! Being old steel piston engines, they will require a nice, long break-in. Being Enyas, the break-in will last longer than normal, since the steel they use is very hard. Once broken in, they will last a long, long time. And yes, you can get RC carbs for them (and buy RC versions).

(There's a third one listed here:

https://cs206.xbit.jp/~w041133/store13/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_9&sort=20a&page=2 )

Wow guys! Thanks for the replies.. I got goose bumps when I found these today.  Three things my father loved - Flying, boating, and modeling.  Would mean a lot to me, and my kiddos, if I can get these engines into a model airplane or boat (or both...)

Thanks a million for the info and links!

It looks like the Enya 09 III model to me. They also came with a smaller muffler and a flap for priming. With the later IV model (still being made/sold) they moved the exhaust to the other (right hand) side.

For a bit of Enya history you can also have a look here: Enya history and here: Enya 09 history

One of these would go well with one of those engines, I think:

Here are some of mine, Enya 09IV BB on the left and Enya 09III to the right with its muffler in front. These engines are really loud and the later mufflers are larger but heavier. They have unfortunately stopped making the dedicated 09 muffler and now instead only offer the same muffler as for their .15 engines.

Hi, these are very nice sport engines with very good power and excellent durability if you use the correct fuel. I have the Enya 09 IV version for CL and its a very good small engine. Please avoid synth. lubes with these ones.
Tried 7 X 5 and 7 X 4 props, and the 7 X 4 runs better in my model., using FAI fuel with 25 % all castor.

1/2A engines are .049. These are class A engines.

They are also from the 80's not WWII.

Enya did make mufflers for these and Sheldon's may still have some. I have the same engines NIB and they have mufflers.

Fordman - You need to re-read my original post.  Never claimed they were from WWII... the model airplane kits they came in were control line WWII airplanes...  and these engines are NOT from the 80's.  My father purchased them in Japan in the mid '70's.

The engines Fordman knows from the 80s looked almost identical to most of the earlier ones from the 60s and 70s, but that doesn't mean that all engines that looked like his came with mufflers. Yes, Enya made mufflers for them, but when you bought the engine in the clear plastic case with the yellow foam, there was no muffler in the box. If you wanted a muffler you bought it separately. That was in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, or at least early 70s...I'm not sure when they started including mufflers with the engine.

Depends where you live. In Britain (and the rest of Europe, probably), 1/2A means 1.5cc (i.e. .09 cu. in.).

We haven't had any competition in those classes for a very long time, but 1/2A refers to .050 and below here.

That's right, .050 was the cutoff between class A and 1/2A. The reason Cox made a TD .051 as well as a TD .049 was so guys could switch engines and fly the same plane in both class A and 1/2A competition...the power output was essentially identical. That was often done in free flight competition.

"1/2A" may have come to mean something else to others much later after those days were mostly forgotten, but the U.S. system of engine classification for competition is where the term came from, without a doubt.

Again, true for the US but not necessarily true elsewhere. Long before the glow plug, and way before the Tee Dee, the folks in Britain were flying what they called "1/2-A", which meant .09 engines. Mainly using diesels. And I'll bet the way Britain went, so did the former British colonies and territories - Australia, New Zealand, etc.

If someone shows me a magazine that uses the term "1/2A" prior to the establishment of the US engine classes, and shows that it applied to .09s, then I'll believe it. Until then, I don't, because the term "1/2A" is such an odd term to apply to engines without a reason. Where would such a term come from?

Sorry for the diversion...I hope you enjoy your little Enyas!

Back to the engines.
The only muffler that really makes them quite is the car muffler (shown below), does anyone know where to get more of them?

Never seen one of those mufflers...looks like it could be very useful. But what's wrong with the strap-on mufflers Enya made for it? Get 'em on ebay.

Looks like you've got a single BB type. I like mine very much.

Yep, that's the fairly rare single ball race 09-IV which is identified by the red anodised prop driver.

On the 1/2A stuff, way back when, some racing classes in CL were known as class A, B, C where A was 2.5cc engines, B was 5cc and C was 10cc, at least as far as the FAI were concerned. From that, an engine roughly half the size of the 2.5cc (and an 09 was the most common) became known unofficially as 1/2A. This is just for countries flying under FAI rules.

I just really like this muffler, it is lightweight and very quiet, plus it makes the engine run smoother, without any big loss in performance. The stock mufflers are loud (perhaps due to the piston baffle, and cross flow, construction) and even the super quiet muffler muffler from Enya is rather loud and heavy.

The single BB engines are still available, as far as I know, but they might be replaced by the double ball-raced quicky version in the long run.

You're right about the Enya mufflers...they don't help a lot, and I don't want to go to a heavier one. If you find a source for yours please let us know...I would like to try one too.

I suppose the old Tatone types, like the Calumet and the three outlet in-cowl type, don't muffle much either, but I thought I'd try them. Mecoa still sells them.
