Failed crop dusting job interview
Well, hate to be back on here again so soon, but here I am. 4th flight of the Pawnee and whoops. Did the maiden, couple more to get the feel of the plane with maneuvers up at a reasonably good altitude. What an awesome, awesome flier!! It was dead calm at the field, perfect conditions, 4th flight that day, started playing low with some hammer head turns at the ends of the runway, this bird was almost pivoting on the wing tip up top. Well to keep the story short, my up line was shorter than the last by a bit. Moral to the story to self, don't keep shortening the up line, just delay pull out! The angle of attack was coming up a little faster than the ground and it got the wing tip pointing down just before impact. I'm sure I was putting some strain on the tx sticks at the 8' AGL mark So I'll get started on the repair soon. Wing tubes and covering ordered.

Hot dogging and AG cats don't mix. You caused your own crash.

For sure I was the cause. I got seduced by it! 3rd fight and it felt so good...I was the one that did take it there.
When the teal covering comes off of back order, it will be back!!!

RE: Failed crop dusting job interview
i was a mechanic on pawnnee's and air tractor 301's in georiga and have some small stick time in aerial application planes many moons ago, if you want to keep it "scale" looking, we was taught as u climb out to leave the last row we did to leave it at a 45% angle and and fly level for a count of 2...1 one thousand 2 one thousand then turn in the oposite direction, 9 times out of 10 this would line us back up for the next row just next to the one we did...you see more of the turboprop thrushs and airtractors doing the hammer head turns since there power to weight ratio is alot better, although i do know of some crazy pawnee pilots lol

RE: Failed crop dusting job interview
I do aerial application's using a king-air 90, and i dont know of anyone who does hammer-head style turns doing ag work. If their are, they are Crazy/Ignorant as that is not the best situation to be in at 100-200' AGL. A typical turn for us, Pull up to 4-5* pitch up (we climb 200' higher than our spray altitude for the turn), 45* turn @ 45* bank in the opposite direction of where out next line is (if line is to the left, we turn right). Then immediately roll into a 60* banked turn opposite of the first (if the 45* turn was to the right, we roll into a left turn) to intercept the next line, when about 90* off of the next line heading, a slow decent is begun to re-intercept our spray altitude. This typically gets you right back on the next line (which for us is a 1000' spacing between them). And we do all this at night wearing night vision goggles.

Just using an older Saito 72...definitely not much verticle, but good enough for what the plane is. Must be something else with the 160t in it!!

RE: Failed crop dusting job interview
Sorry for your crash but it looks like the pilot survived I love my Pawnee and have about 80-100 flights on her. I have come close to doing exactly what you did once and can still feel it in my stomach. Now I just fly scale and mild acrobatics. Whenever I get would up, I get myself to the field and fly the Pawnee - its like taking a Valium - sooo relaxing.

RE: Failed crop dusting job interview
Your airplane reminded me of when I almost had a crash with a crop duster in south Georgia. The problem is I was driving a tractor/trailer east from Albany, Ga. When I came out from behind a row of trees the crop duster passed in front of me at what seemed my altitude and not that distant. Scared the you know what out of me. That field got additional fertilizer when I stopped and cleaned my shorts. I'm sure the pilot knew he was clear of me but I paid close attention on that road from then on. Dennis

Had one close call similar to yours. It was with a chopper. I was cresting a hill just before a valley that he was flying down doing pipeline inspection (is what I think he was doing) that intersected the road. I didn't see him and obviously the way he banked away from me when I crested he didn't see me either. For height wise there was no way we would have meet, but ya, I pulled over to check the shorts, and thankfully it was a chopper, cause I think he had to land to check his also [X(].
