I assume it will take all week for each pilot to fly in front of all the judges. These appear to be raw scores and no normalizing will occur until fridays flying is complete?

How many pilots fly in front of each panel in one sessions?

Thanks. I am just not familiar with the format.

Chuck

There are 4 groups.  They are raw scores but you can still get an idea of who is where.  Each pilot flies 1 flight per day through Friday.  That gives all contestants time to be in front of each set of judges.  Then they can normalize.  CPLR, Benoit, Chip and Tetsuo look very strong so far.

Saturday is an off-day/rain day, Sunday the semi's and Monday the Finals.

Good luck to all

So who ever judges has to judge all four days?
Do they have a Matrix like Masters at the nats?

The Worlds are not contestant judged.  They pay to have specific judges come for this one and then have a jury to oversee all of the judges.  The judges do judge each and every day but that's what they're there for.  I'm not sure about the Matrix.

These scores are a little easier to read. They don't mean anything ,but at least they are somewhat sorted. http://www.modelaircraft.org/files/Worlds_Day1_Prilimaries_Rank.pdf

Dennis,

There are 4 groups of pilots and 4 groups of judges. Each country provides a judge and those guys do nothing but judge. So, each panel of judges would judge 1/2 of a day. Either morning or afternoon, but they do judge all 4 days.

At the end of the 4 days, each pilot has flown in front of each panel of judges and then the scores can be normalized. Basically this means, until Friday, none of the scores really mean anything until each round can be normalized.

I am not sure now if all flights count. Probably not all and the drop at least one.

Glad I read this... so making a day trip on Saturday sounds like a bad idea! A trip on Sunday will be worth while to watch?

Vince,

Correct, after Friday all scores in each round will be normalized with TBL (don't ask me to explain it as I dont have a clue how it works, but it is supposed to throw out odd scores from judges). They will keep 3 out of 4 prelim rounds and the top 20 (I believe) go to the semi's which are on Sunday.

Depends on whether you want to see P-11 (Friday) or F-11 (Sunday).

In my opinion, ANY day is a great day to watch!  These are the best from around the world.  I also think if you want to see the most airplanes to understand what everyone is doing differently with their setups, Friday is an excellent day to go.  Everyone will still have their planes out.  Sunday will be another good day.  As long as it doesn't rain, there won't be any competition on Saturday.  Monday will be the Finals and you will definitely see some awesome flights put in.

Don't get too caught up in the scores just yet. They really don't mean a lot until everyone has been through all four panels of judges. However, after today you will begin to get a sense of who will eventually float to the top and probably make the semi-finals.

Judges are selected based on an approved list that FAI has. The host country selects the judges and the final list must be approved by FAI/CIAM (aeromodeling commission). All judges are seated/judge each day. The are combined into a single judging panel for the finals.

Pre-TBL, it looks like Chip had a real scorcher of a 2nd round, at least compared to the other pilots in his grouping.

Without seeing tare sheets, it's hard to say. He could have had a judge that was pretty far off from the average that would adjust his score some. Same with the other flyers. It would be much easier to gauge how everyone is actually doing with the tare sheets with the judges averages versus seeing a number on a graph with nothing behind it.

That said, I liked the graph from yesterday where the rank was assigned by the score, not by the pilot number. I know that it doesn't mean anything right now, but it would be interesting to see how everything unfolds as half of the group has flown against each other.

Arch and all ...

That sorted by scores list got out by mistake (and is gone from the web site now). The daily prelim scores can only be posted in order of pilot number or country but NOT by raw score totals. FAI rules. Friday is the day all the dust will settle!

I've seen some absolutely fantastic flying! Everybody should come here and see this!!! This contest is a real treat to watch.
