It's really cool, but you gained nothing over your one engine plane, where did all that extra power go? Or are you rpm/pitch limited?

Michael ,

Are you using the same prop with this twin model than when single engine ???. Or did you increase the pitch and decrease the diameter on this one ???

Michael,

Congratulations on your winning the 15 cc class with 13 cc of power. In listening to the video it appears that you had a very solid performance with the engines, and I didn't hear anything that sounded like the props interfering with each other. While you fell slightly short of your speed goal, I think that proving you could get a twin engine design to perform well is a significant achievement.

So I am left with a couple of questions.

Do you think the propellers are optimized for this design or is their more speed left to find?

Or is it time to redesign to lower the drag in another twin design?

No, not push-pull. I was thinking a little more along the lines of the Burnelli CB-16 flown in 1927.

http://www.aircrash.org/burnelli/ch_cb16.htm

This gets both engines in the same fuselage, lowering the number of wing to intersections, while also reducing surface area of the fuselage. Just lay the engines over so they are mounted head to head, plus room to service the plugs, this puts all the cooling drag in a single area. I would also keep the top of the wing clean instead of building a low wing design.

Hallo speedfreaks,

I have made a new cfk wing with spread tow and new design. Also a new video of a flight with the new wing.

Have fun .

Wow covers it.

It looks like you increased the wing span by about 50%. Does it hold it's speed better when pulling out of the dive with the new wing?

Too bad the pioneers of flight can't see stuff like this. Guys like Lillienthal, Cayley, the Wrights, etc. Of course, what they witnessed at the time was pretty stupendous to begin with....but I think this RC stuff would blow their minds.
Even a latter day pioneer like Howard Hughes, imagine what he would think...?

This twin is gorgeous..it would win a speedplane beauty contest to go along with the speed records.

It would be interesting to see there reaction to this type of stuff.
It would be even more interesting to see what they could come up with, given the resources they would have today.

Great effort Michael! You have clearly got a lot of experience from pylon racing (just a guess based on your user name! ) - your wings look very similar in plan form and I know the aerofoils are pretty optimised for speed, so I'm sure there are a lot of common ideas. The German built Dago was my favourite F3D model - really grooved. I used to find setting up one MB40 properly for a race heat a handful, but setting up two at once - that's awesome! What pitch are you running on the prop? I guess you make your own - this is the black art that I never had time to really get to grips with during my racing - I relied on other clever guys there! From the sound, I figure you are getting around 33 - 35000 rpm (maybe a little higher...) in the air, so ultimately the prop pitch is going to become the limiting factor to your speed.

Good luck with the speed attempts - has the new model broken 400kph?

Hallo Pat,

I read you stay in Dorset. Now I am every week in Dorchester in the heard of Dorset until March visit a project close to Poundbury.

Yes in the moment the propellerpitch is the limit, but I have made a new metal( alu) mold for new speed props with higher pitch. In the moment I use 9,4 "pitch.

I have also made new crankshafts for the MB 40 engine to run one engine clockwise the other one counterclockwise. This will also help to rise up the efficency.

I have made also a new wing and tail with new design.

I am sure to get far over the 400km/h barrier next year and I will drive home the big winning pott.

Best regards Michael

Hallo speedfreaks,

in the next competition year I will start with the Doppelprinz speedmodell with 1 clockwise turning and 1 couterclockwise turning propeller. I have made new propeller molds for left and right and new crankshafts for the MB engines.

I think this and the new propellers with more pitch will give a speedincrease again - I hope.

Hier some pictures for the new speed propeller molds.
