Great progress and interesting videos.  No shrimp boats for me Wayne.  As a child I was given a completed static model of a tall ship and decided to play with the rigging.. All the time the guy spent just to have me knot it up and tangle the string.  The mess scarred me for life lol.  Too much line on a shrimper for my fat fingers.

BTW I got a simulated blue strobe light for a certain project .  Better be sure you have all your "documents" when my boat hits the water

Don't think I'l be building a "shrimper", but a drager. Not many shrimp boats up here, there are some in Maine. On the SO shore of MA and the Cape, where I live there are lots of dragers. I'm 1 1/2 hrs SO of Gloster,45 nim SO of Boston, and 45 nin North of Newbedford Lots of fishing boats to see. Larry

I have been doing lots of looking and reading on the internet the last couple of days and here is what I found.
The wooden things in picture one are called “Doors”. My guess is that they open the nets when in the water.
They are carried in some sort of cradle when not in use.
When the booms are lowered, the Doors are winched out to the end the of booms which in turn pulls the nets to the end of the boom. From there the doors are lowered into the water and the front and back of the net are winched out.
Michael will have to verify that for sure. But that’s my understanding in a nutshell.
Now comes my problem, well not really a problem but I would like to run and operate the boat in two different configurations.
The first configuration would be, Nets and doors stored, booms up.
Second configuration would be, booms lowered, doors winched out to the end of the booms, which in turn pulls the nets out to the booms.
Starting to see where I'm going with this. I knew I should have paid more attention in geometry class instead of chasing girls. Who would have guessed 35 odd years later I would need it. Thats where the geometry comes in to play.
Now what does all this mean. I need another servo which will have to be mounted on the deck somewhere.
Sitting here in my Patrol car thinking about this, here is what comes to mind.
Booms in upright position, Doors stored on the deck.
Pull doors from their position just enough to clear the deck.
Lower booms all the way.
Pull doors and nets to the ends of the booms.
Sounds pretty good so far...........
Raise booms to about 45 deg
winch in doors to the deck.
Raise booms.
Oh the joys of scratch building...............
Pictures two and three show the two configurations I’m looking for.

The doors are used to keep the nets in the water, and spred out. Do the shrimp nets have a cod end like the dragers ?

Wayne,

Here's an interesting video about the "Batwing otter board", an improvement  to the otter board or trawl door as it is sometimes called.  It is about 5 minutes long with the second half showing the doors for comparison.  You can almost see the net way back in the distance but they are interested in the doors.  Take a look: http://www.olitek.com.au/projects/batwingotterboard.

Bob

P.S.  Otter defined:
An “otter” is a wooden board, weighted to float on its edge in the water. A line is attached to one side in such a position that, when the otter is towed through the water, it angles away from the opposite otter.

Looks like two Porpoises or Dolphins in that pic.  One at the stern and another is visible (fin) to the left.

Hey

Ok im going to try and explain as simple as i can if you look at the dif pics you may be ablle to see what im talking about The two doors in the picture are connected to the what we call the bridle whitch is a branch of three 5/8" cables about 240 ft long  spliced into a 7/8" inch cable called the main cable that cable runs from the doors to the block at the end of the out rigger through it and back to the wench drum. The doors are 10 ft long and 48 " wide and are used to spread the nets thats were the bridle comes in when everything is out on the outrigger and you are setting out one of the three cable is hooked to a door and the other to another and the center is connected to the bib of the net or the very top of the net. When the doors hit the water you apply the brake slightly on the wench and the force of the water and the boat moving spreads the doors and then you slowly let them down till they are where you want them the the net is connected to the doors there are four conners in a net and in each corner there in a leg line bout 4-6 ft long the top one goes to the top and and the bottom leg line goes to the bootom of the door and the same with the other door the doors ride on the bottom at maybe a 40 degree angle and and tilt back slightly then there is a chain that runs between the doors called a tickler chain when everything is on bottom doors are spread net is open the chain is about 1 ft in front of the net digging in the mud making the shrimp jump up and when they jump they either hit the top of the net wich is 4-14 ft off bottom just depends on how you got it rigged and what time of the year it is then by the time they try and go back to bottom the bottom of the net is under them and they are traped. im not real sure how you would get them out to the end of the outrigger with another servo but some of the smaller boats never put them on the deck they just let them hang while the outriggers are up

Much the same as a drager, only on a drager net they use rubber rolers on the chain to help the net glide over rocks. Up here most are now using steel doors. They are smaller and concave shaped. Do the shrimp nets have a "cod end" and chafing gear?

Thanks, We use rollers to when the mud is real soft or when we go to Florida onlime bottom. We also use aluminum doors but they are really expensive and we loose them all the time catching sunkboats o pipelines going to oilrigs or whatever else we get hung up on lol!!. Im not real shure what a cod end is it has a tail bag that is tied with a trip not  and the tailbag has shaffing gear around it. Sounds like your talking bout somthing like butter fishing or cod fishing the gear is alot alike. One thing I did notice in that diagram above is the nets wern't even we do drag them even the only one that isn't is the try net (the little net) if you dont the boat wonn't stear rite.

Hey Michael
Since you asked how I was going to rig the doors, here it is.
My plan was to use another continious rotation servo mounted somewhere near the boom servo. As the booms are being lowered the doors can be pulled out with the other servo. At least in theory that's what I had planned. Of course we all know how that goes.
Of course you did mention that the smaller boats just leave the doors attached to the booms and raise and lower the booms as needed. So if need be I'll attach the doors to the booms and not worry about if I can actually make them function. But I'm going to at least try.

Just a heads up for everyone, the updates will be a little slow for the next couple of weeks. On the 15th we head down to the Keys (key west) for my wifes 50th and my daughters 8th birthday. We will be down there for about 5 days.
I am trying to get everything set up before hand to be able to spray the final coats of paint on the hull and cabin and then let them sit until I get back. Then I can start final assembly.
Once final assembly starts, I'll update as I go along.

BTW, I plan on have a big plate of shrimp as soon as I get there.
