Humm, sounds like a lot of possablitys. It seems like a great motor and has more power than my 4 othere dle30''s.  But this motor is reminding me why I stick with a brand that wroks and scares me of any otheres.

I have 5 dle30's 1 dle20, and 1 dle55.  All of them bought used of this site except for 1 dle30 that I got from towerhobbies. And I have not had a single issues (but I have only been flying for 2 years now.)

I got a BME50 in GeeBee that gave me fits and I sent it in and now it runs like a charm!

So I called Troybuilt about my motor issues with this PTE36R and they told me to just send it in and they will look it over and replace the parts I need. Now I have no clue how much this will cost but Im glade I did not by this motor used with no warrenty.

So guys what is a good 3 blade prop for this motor?

The Corsair has to have a 3 blade!

Mike I got 6300 out of this prop, it comes in different colours. It had ok performance, not unlimited vertical though. Your plane will be 3kg (6lb) more, that's a big difference

Asking that motor to run a 3 blade on a 19lb plane may be too big of an ask, you don't see the prop when you are flying it, maybe just stick to a 2 blade

Mike which calculator did you use? I find this one handy http://personal.osi.hu/fuzesisz/strc_eng/index.htm

6300 on a 17x10 3 blader is rather whimpy, no? The OS33Gt turns an 18x10 Mezjlik 3 blader around 7700.

I was going to say to try the Mezj 18x10 3 blader on the Corsair but it probably won't turn much at all. Is the PTE realy that whimpy or is it just poor set-up?

Hi Matt, troy built models tested the same prop http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/PTE36R.html have a look at the last video.
they got 6600, my tuning was set rich for run in so me being 300 lower is understandable.
I think the OS is one hell of a good engine, pity they are not rear exhaust.

Saw that the all up weight of this motor, ignition, and muffler is 2lbs., 4oz. Does anyone know what the weight of the motor alone is?

I have a new PTE on hand but have not run it. The rear exhaust is very attractive, I agree, but if the engine has no guts it won't do much good....

Yes, the OS is a beast when piped. At least as strong as a YS 175 on 30% glow. Same props (19.5x11, 20x10.5, 20.5x10 apc) same or slightly better rpm, with very useful mid range. I hope OS brings the engine out in rear exhaust configuration.

Wouldn't the comparison be more meaningful if you tested your PTR36R with the same pipe and prop that you used on your OS 33Gt?

Yes, at some point I will. Have no other expectations about this powerplant and will wait to be surprised either way, good or bad. Running the PTE currently is just not in the cards

Ok so its been a while since I was able to post here but have a couple things I gotta say.

First right before fire season cooked off with a vengance I was able to have one great day of flying and put 3 flights on the plane with this engine. It ran really well. I have no idea of numbers but Ill tell you this that my MXSR came in at what I thought was a little heavy but it hovers at a little less than 1/2 throttle which seemed to me to be pretty freakin great. I was totally stoked with that. I want to make some minor adjustments to the setup of things but Im happy with it.

Secondly I was contacted by PTE sometime back after reading about my experiences here. Between them and Redwing RC I was given an incredible experience that really impressed me. Guys Iv been flyin rc for 25 years and there are few things that impress me but this was customer service that went WAY beyond. Ill definitely keep this in mind in the future with my purchases. It took me a bit to get back here and post about this due to work but I have to publicly say that these folks made it more than right as far as Im concerned and I greatly appreciate it.

I finally got to fly this engine in my 20 pound PT-19. It was very easy to start and ran flawlessly. This one is a keeper. Great job PTE... Looking forward for future engine sizes.

That thing is beautiful, Im not much of one for old school planes from the 30s but that looks super. Glad to hear. I havent been able to fly for a while due to work. Hopefully in a month or so I will have time to play.

Thanks pulsar110 for the kind words.

I am running a XOAR 18x8 laminated prop and getting 7,700 rpm's If I switched over to a Xoar 18x8 beach it might be better. The laminated prop is slightly heavier.

Got my PTE36 last month. With a little more than 1 hour of run time my idle became erratic. WOuld surge and act like it was going to stall. Adjusting the low end was hit or miss. Then it stalled and would not restart. No spark! Tried a new plug, no spark. Tested the crank sensor and it was fine. Tested the ignition unit with an RcExcel tester and no spark.

FYI, I'm using a 5 cell nimh to power it.

Before this happened the engine ran great. What a beast!

Emailed Milehigh Rc where I bought the engine about the problem. Have no doubts they will make it right. They have been great in the past!

Sure glad I decided to break it in on the stand instead of on my new 71 Slick!

Sounds like the problem that I had. I first changed out the cap to an rcexel but it did the same thing. So I just used a spare Rcexel ignition module.

Gunny,

So the standard RcExcel Ignition works? Does it use the PTE Crank Sensor? My Ignition gave up the Ghost after a little over an hour on the stand breaking it in.

Hi rexbirk,

Yes, the standard RcExcel Ignition works and with the original sensor. I now have over 10 flights on my engine and not a hick-up. Plus an additional hour of run time on the ground.

Gunny

Great news. I have had nothing but grief with some other Chinese Engines Ignition Units. Have had great results with the RcExcell.

If you use the RCExcel on the PTE-36R make sure that you recheck the ignition timing. If it is advanced too far it may kick back and give your fingers a vicious WHACK.

Shipped my original PTE Ignition back for replacement. Installed an RcExcel and she fired right up. My mixtures had to be leaned quite a bit from the settings used with the old ignition. My poor and inconsistent idle is now gone. It idles great. My original ignition must have been weak before it failed outright.

It was a direct replacement using the PTE Sensor.

I'm happy again!

The PTE ignition does not like a 5cell ( full charged 6.6 + ) .. anything over 6 volt and will burn out,   a 4cell ( fully charged 5.6 + ) should be used ...... as I was told

The manual and also Red Wing RC Website says max 7.2 volts. I think I read or heard somewhere, maybe Troybuilt Models Site, that 6 volts was max.

Nothing like conflicting information! I think I will set my IBEC unit to 5.3 or so.

As of now I am running an RcExcel Ignition on mine. May leave it on since I know they are reliable.

Several people went through PTE ignition's on 5cell's  but doing ok on 4cell's
If the RCEXL is working for you keep in there alot more reliable

Ran 40 ounces thru it today. I am leaving in the RcExcel ! I have three hours on it now. Starts easily. Have not idled it yet except for short periods. I'm going to see how the idle is next.

I only wish it had a single bolt prop though. It's a pain to drill a prop!

BTW... My original Ignition module failed on a 6.6v A123 pack which was regulated down to 5.4 volts on the regulator.

I use both but a single hole to enlarge is easier. This size engine does not need all those bolts!
