I didn't do it because I'm afraid of spider-cracking effect, especially if you nose it over. Thou it's real hard to do with this plane, one time it hit a puddle at the end of the run-out and it tiped up but fell back down and didn't even come close to hitting the prop! I will try this for the weekend, since I put the 61 in there I don't want to run it hot so I'll dremel out the slots.

Well, I started dremeling out the cooling vents on my Sukhoi cowl, but its going VERY slow. Good news is that it is going pretty well. The fiberglass is extra thick at the vents and I am doing the cutting at an approximate 45 degree angle into the cowl. I was expecting the vent to be a little weaker but when I gave it a wiggle, it was still stiffer then the rest of the cowl. Will try to post some pictures when I get done. I plan on painting it black on the inside just at the vents. Hope my hands can stay steady.....

Thats a picture of my dad and the Ryan he used to own in the 60's. One of these days, I am going to strip down my GP Ryan and redo it in the Blue/white scheme of my dads STA.

I'm at the end of assembly and the only think I have left to do is install the throttle pushrod and cowl. But I've run into a problem. I can't figure out a good place to run the pushrod through the firewall. The fuel tank placement kinda messes up all of the good routing areas. Anyone have pics or advice on how to run the throttle pushrod?

    Dave,
I made a little brace out of 1/16 or 3/32" ply and glued it to the firewall.....I then glued the pushrod sleeve to the brace.....if I was less lazy I would have drilled a hole through the brace and ran the pushrod sleeve through it. (that's what I did on my Funtana).

Try using a flexible cable type pushrod. That should get you going. Might take a little doing but it CAN be done.

    Mmari,
I am also putting a Saito 91 in my Phoenix Su31. Care to share some more details on how you mounted the engine? I am using a Hayes engine mount for mine. May seem simple but this is my 1st assembly of an ARF (3rd airplane to fly) and still learning the basics. Already have about 12 hours on the so called 6 hour build and I am about halfway done.

    Thanks,
    Ron

What is the best way to secure the fuel tank in this plane? I got my throttle linkage fixed, but I'm wondering how you guys secured your tank.

Oh, one other thing. Where are you routing your antena? Are you making it exit in front of the cockpit like in the manual, or you guys finding a more clever place to put it?

    Dave,
I'm at work right now so I can't see it, but if I recall, I stuffed a bunch of lightweight foam around the tank (not the heavy foam rubber stuff), and then put a piece of balsa behind the tank to keep it from sliding back.
My antenna is routed out the side if the fuse near the back of the canopy and is attached to the rudder.

You going to make a trip up again this year?

Thanks for the info Mike. I need to get more foam. Thats kind of what I was thinking. I'll tack a piece of wood in there to secure it.

Yeah I'd like to fly with you guys again. I'd like to check out the ARCS next time. I was planning on coming up with Wes, but had to change plans. Next time I'll try to make it.

Well I have put in the HP 61 and it fits like a glove. Looks like I'll need to put about 2.5 ounces in the tail. I think i am going to use epoxy and some small fishing weights poured into the rear of the fuse. Anyone ever do this?

I've been flying this model since Oct, and I'd have to say, its possilbly the best arf, for the money, I have ever put together & flown. I pull it w/ a Saito 72 - 13 x 6 APC, 6.1 lbs. I just put on a Zinger 13 x 5....big diff...I can hang it on prop at 3/4 throttle, up high that is. I have found that a 1/4"movement from cg , either way, is a lot. This plane likes a perfect cg.

I just put my Phoenix Models Sukhoi together but I dont have the engine installed yet. I ordered a Magnum XLS 52A (2 Stroke) and its on backorder but i do have a O.S. .50 SX on a plane that i dont fly anymore, would the OS be better?

Still waiting to test fly mine. Maybe this wednesday if I get the chance. I put a Magnum 52XLS on mine, but I think the Saito 72 would be the best engine to throw on it. I've got several props to try with the 52. 11x5, 11x6, 11x7, 12.25x3.75, 12x5, and 12x6. I'll probably use the 11x6 until it gets well broken in and than switch to a 12x6. I have a 12.25x3.75, but I don't really see where it would be very good on thsi airplane. It's not going to be a 3D bird, so I'll be shooting more for scale aerobatics than 3D.

I agree on the kit quality. It seems very good.

BTW, an 11 inch prop looks very small on this plane. The cowl is so large it makes the prop look small. I think having a Saito 72 with a 13 or 14inch prop would make it look better.

I also scrapped the idea of using a spinner and went with a spinner nut http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXE158&P=0 . I think it looks a lot better and at 1 oz it's actually lighter than a plastic spinner. This is the first time I've used a spinner nut. I was wondering if I should use it in addition to the prop nut, or just replace the prop nut with the spinner nut. I would think that have both nuts would be safer, but if I remember correctly I've seen the spinner nuts used as stand alone nuts. What have you guys done in the past?
