Ya, i agree, some parts were of poor quality. The most impressive things were the fiberglass wheelpants and cowl, as well as the carbonfiber landing gear. Heres a few pics of the plane

I have a Black Horse SU31 (40), the same factory as your Phoenix, my elevator hinge broke and down she came, the hinge was not properly done as it was not securely sandwiched between the wood, hence the lower part of the wood below the hinge broke and the hinge came out. Please always check your hinges.

can you replace the hinges with another brand or would it butcher up the wood?

Would sealing the hinge gap prevent hinge failure and the resulting catastophic results?

Closing the gap is not the issue. Its just bad hinges and bad installation of hinges. What you can do is:

    i. remove the hinges w/o butchering the slots, instal better quality hinges and re-pin them using tooth picks; or
ii. remove the hinges and cut new slots for CA hinges.

There was no gap between the aileron and wing. there was 4 pins on each hinge, but they were to small, toothpicks would have been better.

Just Flied my Sukhoi Flies great, but I dont know why it doesnt pick up too much speed I have a TT 61 GP engine(it balanced perfectly I put the battery on the back of the servos). Am using a 12x6 prop and a 3 inch spinner, it might be because of the spinner. What do you think guys?

Dago Red am very sorry about your Sukhoi.

    Thanks R/C BOY!!

The spinner shouldnt be a problem, remeber that most of the pull comes from the tips of a prop. How much does the plane weigh, that could be a factor. maybe a differ prop too. Good luck, fly safe.

Maybe a 12x8 prop will increase your top end a little.
Also, I think the cowl on the Sukhoi creates A LOT of drag.....I don't think anything you do will get that plane to be a speed demon.

I was planning on opening half of the scale vents on the cowl, got alot done, but test flew the plane before it was finished. I made a baffle to make the airflow go to one side of teh cowl, and flow over the engine for better cooling. still got a good SU-31 cowling, lol. now i ned the plane.

I agree that the 3" spinner is no problem whatsoever. With your engine I would suggest an APC 11x7 prop. The Sukhoi is no speed demon and wasn't meant to be, what you should aim for is about 70 - 85 MPH as an optimum speed range for an aerobatic plane like a Sukhoi, Cap, Extra, Giles, etc.

Assuming you get around 12,500 RPM with your engine and an 11x7 prop, your speed should be between 80 and 85 MPH...

If it goes faster than that, add an inch to the diameter of the prop for more vertical...

    Good luck!

I'm using a Magnum 52 with a 12x6 prop. Mine seems like it flys a "scale speed" to me. It's not blazing fast but it does require you to keep the speed up a bit when landing. I'm not a real big fan of fast planes and maybe that explains why I don't fly my Suk more often. I prefer slower flying 3D fun-fly type planes.

GLOW PLUG I ALREADY TRIED THE 12X8 PROP, SAME SPEED THE ENGINE IS IN BREAK IN. I ALSO TRIED AN 11X8 PROP EVEN WORST. NOW AM GOING TO TRY AGAIN WITH THE 12X6 AND AN 1 1/2 INCH SPINNER.

guys i am also getting the 40 sized sukhoi tomorrow. Plan to use a OS 46 FX that i have lying around.
    What prop should i go for? I have the 10 x6, 10 x 7, 11 x 7, 11 x 8, 12.25 x 3.75. What do u guys think?

Some mods that come to mind are, bigger wheels, spacers aft of the cowl for ventilation, 135 deg mount so that muffler is on the bottom.

Also, what is the capacity of the stock fuel tank? Do i need to upgrade it?
Also is it possible to order spare cowls in case i decide to use a bigger engine in the future?

    Thanks...

I would try an 11x6....mine flies well with an 11x5.....but I've been meaning to try an 11x6 but never have. My friend was flying an 11.5x5.5 and it was perfect with a TT Pro .46, but I haven't been able to locate one of those.

The stock fuel tank is a little small, but there is pleny of room in there to upgrade. Don't know if they sell cowls....I'm sure a Kyosho cowl would fit though......
