Got both my Sukhoi and Giles in yesterday... both are gorgeous and very well built.

Everyone's comments on build quality were true... they're great.

Very very happy for this price point.

I will be trying a GMS .47 in one of them as well. We'll see how it goes. The GMS is said to be pretty powerful as a .47 goes.

Any prop suggestions for these birds w/ a .47??

    -Steve

Keep those pictures coming guys. I would like to see closeups of engine installations in order to see how well the cowling is covering certain engines and mufflers. With a pretty bird like this it would be a shame to butcher the cowl up too much. I'm interested in both 2 and 4 stroke installations. Also what aftermarket mufflers you guys are using. I'd also like to hear some comments on landing gear both front and back.

As for engines, both the Magnum and Irvine's look like winners. The Mag 52 is the same weight as the 46. It's supposed to outperform OS's 50SX for $50 cheaper. The Irvine has been know for it's power too. Might have to get one from Just Engines.

The gms .47 has a lot of power, but not enough to 3-d. I've only had about 4 flights so I haven't tried any major stuff yet. If I get a chance to get to the field this weekend I'll see if I can wring it out a little.

As to the installation, I used the standard gms 47 muffler (think huge, it's similar to the tower hobbies one on their 46). I had to cut into the cowl quite a bit, but it's not noticeable at all either in flight or close up, since it exits directly under the cowl.

BTW, I'm using a APC 11x5 on the plane, and while I'm still running a little on the rich side appears to have more power than my 46fx.

So flynboy-RCU... How is the vertical w/ this setup? I'm not concerned about 3-d performance, as these aren't really 3-d ships... but good vertical is nice.

vertical, if not unlimited is very close. I have to reduce throttle for hammerheads to keep it in sight, and it can do very huge consecutive loops.

Thats good to know. Now with a Mag 52 it should be even better. Can't wait to get mine.

Fatboy, my Sukhoi came in at 5 1/3 lbs dry, with no weight added for balance. Much less than the 6lb advertised weight....that's a first!!

What do you guys think about dropping a Thunder Tiger F-54S 4-Stroke into the Sukhoi?? According to Tower it is lighter than the Mag 52. Thoughts??

    Glowplug,

Thanks for the info. I going to try the Saito 72 first, why not right. Sure hope the weather conditions ( to windy to haul bricks) get better down here, I'll have to sqeeze that in my prayers tonite. I think the threads that mentioned to strenghten the tail section by wires and to pull-pull the rudder is the route I'll take.

I can't see any need to strengthen the tail section. Mine is plenty sturdy. As far as the pull-pull goes, let us know how it goes. I wanted to do the same but I think I'll need the weight of the pushrods to help balance with the Saito 72. Mine will be ready in a week or so. Things are going slow, trying to assemble this thing during my lunch break at my office. I'm so busy right now some days I don't get lunch (thats hard when your kinda fat like me)!

I agree with ptgarcia.....the tail section seems very solid....I've done multiple violent snaps with mine and have had no problems.....I think it was the "previous generation" of Phoenix ARF's that had that problem (among others).

Fatboy, sounds good....If I had a Saito .72 on hand, you'd better believe I would have dropped it into this plane

Well I'm pretty happy! I recieved the Suk today and it is a very good build job. The quality of the covering is excellent. Not a wrinkle! Going over it and it seems to be a sturdy design and the parts fit is A+. Weight will be the determining factor for the engine as the cowl is very roomy and should not require too much dremel surgery even with a 70 size 4 strk. It has liberal use of tri stock behind the firewall and around the wing bolt area. Can't tell about the landing gear block. Might try to reinforce it with a little tri stock. I am very happy with the initial impressions, can't wait to fly it.
