Fatboy, I'm using an 11x5 APC with a TT Pro .46......seems to be a perfect prop for it.......it should have similar performance with the OS.....I borrowed a buddy's Tower Hobbies .46 muffler to try out on my Pro .46......he said the tower mufflers have given his OS .46 FX's about 1000-1500 more RPM..

Here's mine! Valve cover is gonna show but that is all. A different header will direct the pipe straight back and avoid hacking the cowl up. I am pretty sure it will balance without any added weight in the tail. Hope to get it up this weekend, if the weather holds.

    Iddons,

I moved the battery to the back of the servo area. I made a small box from scrap balsa(hard balsa) so that the battery sat above the pushrods at the very back of the fuselage opening for the wing. (Sorry for the poor description, keep in mind that English is my 2nd language ). I never had problems with this arrangement, and the CG was great for sports flying. The cg was maybe an 1/8th or less in front of the reccommended cg with this setup. Remember that I installed the 61fx after flying the SU31 for months with the 46irvine, if I had gone for the 61fx from the beginning I'd probably have mounted the battery in the rear of the fuselage, on the former just behind the trailing edge, then the cg would probably have been perfect for 3d, ect. My servos were all in the stock location.

My engine was mounted sideways, and fitted perfectly within the cowl. I used a Pitts style muffler, but that was coz I traded the engine from someone for some electric planes and it came with the pitts. With the stock muffler I'd go for 45 degrees inverted so the muffler would come out the bottom, the plane was designed for that imho and it looks great. If you have a pitts, nothing (except maybe a 4-stroke) beats the sound of that muffler on the ground and in the air.

The plane flew brilliantly with my setup, takeoffs could be as long or as short as you wanted it to be and landings were a piece of cake. Vertical was awe-inspiring and those tumbles......oooh those tumbles were brilliant..

Now see what you've done, I'm in tears coz I miss my Sukhoi....

    Cheers

    Christie

Thanks for the all the info Glowglug. I have a couple more questions; Did you need to increase the thrust angle for your TT 46, if so, how much. And also, did you use the stock rods and/or linkages. Is the Central Hobbies CF Rods worth the money, and if so, what size(2-56 or 4-40). I'd like to make the Suhkoi as lite as possible w/ the OS 46FX w/ Pitts Muff. I know that I'm asking more than a couple, but whats the Pros & Cons of installing the Pitts Muff on this engine. Thanks for anyones advise on making this bird a light one.

P.S. is anyone out there on a first name bases w/ GOD, if so, tell him to get RID OF THIS RAIN!!!

    Fatboy,

I used Dave Brown's Fiberglass Pushrod System. $8 or so for 2 36" fiberglass rods and predrilled end fittings (2 for 1/16" piano wire, 2 for Kwik-Link rods, and one for a wyed rod setup). I used Kwik-Links and they work sweet! I was going to use the supplied dowels but one was bowed. I was at the hobby shop looking for a straight dowel - nearly impossible, by the way - when I came across this set-up.

I replaced all the control horns with nice aluminum ones by Qwik Woldwide (I think thats what they're called). They use a single bolt thru the control surface with an aluminum backplate. They look ****in'. I've had them for some time and finally got a chance to use them.

Well, all I need to do to finish my Sukhoi is mount the engine, cowl and fuel tank then balance it. Oh yeah, I need to find a place for the switch and fuel filler. Where has everybody been mounting their switch/charge jack?

No, but I got em anyway

Seriously, the Central Hobbies rods are really nice. I used the 4-40 size simply because that's what my LHS had in stock. The 2-56 size are more than adequate. The only thing I'm a little unhappy with on this plane is when installing the tail rods last night in order to use the outer hole on the elevator my pushrod exit slot wound up about 3/4" wide - oh well!

The Central Hobbies rods are very light and very stiff, much stiffere that a dowel with 6+ inches of wire on the end. You do need to make the slots a bit wider and a 1/4" or so longer because the carbon portion will be extending outside the fuse.

Mine is 6 pounds 4 ounces dry - HS-85's on ailerons full size futabas in the fuse and a piped OS .46FX. Test flight this weekend...

Fatboy, I did not have to change the thrust angle on the motor.....it flies fine stock. I used the stock pushrods, but I did use heavy duty heat shrink between the rod and the dowl on the pushrods. I haven't noticed any slop or binding with the stock setup, so it's fine so far. Not sure about the Pitts muffler......I'm trying the Tower Hobbies muffler on mine because I heard that it acts more like a tuned pipe when compared to a stock TT Pro .46 muffler. I'll have a flight test with the new muffler soon......I don't know what the Pitts would do for performance, if anything.....maybe someone more experienced with Pitts mufflers can chime in?

If you fit the correct Pitts muffler it should improve the performance of the engine, but not a lot(maybe a couple of hundred rpm).

    Cheers

    She flies!

After fiddling with the engine for an hour, removing and reinstalling the tank then removing the fueling valve and surplus tubing it flies. I flew it without the cowl, now that the motor is setup and runs reliably I'll reinstall the cowl over the weekend. The OS .46Fx with Macs pipe turns an 11*6 @ 14,000 which is plenty of power. Vertical is good.

Takeoff was a snap, steer with the rudder - run for a while then ease back. Trim needed was not much, about 3 clicks of aileron and a couple of elevator. I probably need to fiddle with the rudder trim and maybe add a little right thrust but there was a serious cross wind blowing so I'll reserve judgement. Big loops, 4 point rolls, snaps and stall turns were all I fooled around with on the first two flights. My landings were a bit fast but it'll slow down more when the wind isn't howling across the runway. The second landing skipped 4 times with the final one being at quite a slow airspeed. I just need to get used to the plane...

I think I'll add a couple washers worth of right thrust and up the prop size a bit to quiet it down some. With the muffled pipe and an exhaust deflector the plane was very clean after fight. One paper towel and a small spritz of cleaner on one section of the lower fuse and one bottom stab half was all that was needed for cleanup.

Got one of mine together w/ a .47 GMS engine. Seems to be pulling quite strong in break-in tonight. Hope to fly it Sunday to see how it goes. Still have yet to put the cowl or wheel pants on, but it already looks quite nice.

4 more flights today with a prop change to an APC 11*9. Power seems about the same as the 11*6 in flight but RPM's are down from 14K to 11.3K so the plane is MUCH quieter. Knife edge is good, she spins like a top too. Can't tell about the right thrust yet as the same howling crosswind was going on...

Got mine flying today finally. Awesome flying plane! Surprised that it was so well behaved. Not even a hint of wing drop at any time. Flying in some good wind tonight too... cut right through the wind without issue. Had to land in a dead stick (motor still not fullyin broken in) and that wasn't much of an issue either.

Great plane. Very nice loops, good rolls... good spins. Inverted was a breeze. Knife edges had some coupling, but can be made to look good.

    Very pleased.

What kind of motor did you install in yours? Any balance issues? Did you use standard size servos& batteries? Fuel tank position ok?
Glad too hear things are going well.
    Ok I see its a .47
