Hello all,

I've been thinking about this for several weeks and finally took the bull by the horns.
Since Google's Sketchup is free and a great tool that anyone with a little spare time
can learn I decided to trasnfer some classic rc airplane plans to sketchup and make them in 3D.

The main idea is to have several classic designs available in 3D  (based on freely available plans on the net).

Why 3D? I think that if someone wants to start scratch building, what better way than to see the plane in 3D?
you could eaily scale up or down any design and make modifications easily.

I hope this boost a little the interest in scratch building.

Idea is to have the airplane in 3d along with the 2D plans. Maybe even include a formatted parts layout for laser cutting.
I'm attaching a file of what i'm working on.

Anyone wants to pitch in with other classic models?

Elias

Well, saddly my PC crashed some days ago and I lost almost all my data, including the model file...so I guess I'll start over.
Will post progress later.

Hello everyone, I was wondering if there was a way to test the 3D models in a simulation prior to finalising the design. Obviously there are some fancy industry standards out there, but has anyone come across a simple version?

i don't know of any simple version to simulate the 3d models. Some guys just modify the characteristics on flying simulators to match the model.

Well..I started again with the modeling but I think I'm deviating a little from the original path..this is what I came up with now...same idea..make it available as a 3d model along with templates and 2D plan to build it.

Basically the pilatus is a Stick so i thought it would be a good first  near-to-scale project.

Well, I just finished the basic model.
Next step is to make profiles for the formers and simplify the structure a little bit to facilitate construction.
The motor is not my design, was downloaded from Google's 3d Warehouse.

I'll keep posting advances (slow though)

Little advance, basicaly simplified the structure to make construction similar to a stick.
Finishing will require a lot of sanding on the fuse to get the correct pilatus curves on the fuselage, construction will be easy.

Taaking shape.

Dihedral or not?..
Three views show dihedral but i'm thinking on leave it out to have similar flight characteristics to those of the Stick.
