Thus far, I haven't had time to set my engine up, and run it in. I am eager to get it up and running!
The "kit" I received looks very well laid out. I am waiting for a CDI test unit, and a timing rig, before I
proceed.

It's the connecting rod from the OS 33 GT engine. Apparently the BGX and the 33GT share the same wrist pin part number. I don't have a 33GT so I can't measure the crank pin but its half way there.

The stroke between the two engines is .015" different. Could be the bump in compression between the two engines, the BGX having a couple points less.

Interesting to say the least...

I'd be curious to see if the crankcase, and the cylinder head, had the clearance to fit the 33GT rod. I dast believe some serious study
is called for.

Wouldn't it be nice if it was a drop-in replacement....

I'm guessing that the crankshaft on the glow engine is not hard enough to accept a roller bearing. We would need to get data on the Rockwell harness of the material the crank was made from.

The shaft hardness must be Rockwell C59 minimum and a maximum roughness of 15 microinch AA.

http://www.maintenanceresources.com/referencelibrary/bearings/rbshf.htm

If you had to change the crank pin....A good machinist and a gage pin the size you needed would do the trick.

I just got my kit in for the BGX-1.

It looks quite nice.

Questions:

What should I use for an oil to gas mix ratio?

Where can I purchase more plugs?

The package from Max took almost three weeks to arrive, so if you order one just be patient.
The trip through customs seems to slow things down greatly.

First off, DO NOT run less than 16:1 gas/oil ratio. Ask me how I found out the hard way....

Instructions (with pictures!) are on the first page of this thread.

I've been fooling around with mine. I made a Walbro adapter out of Delrin and lapped both sides flat. I need to run a pulse line from the rear end of the radial mount to a pulse fitting on the front of the carburetor.

It's a Walbro WT-499 so I'm going to run it on glow and see how it works out. If it runs good, I'll add ignition and see about using FAI no-nitro fuel.

It's made from Delrin.

http://www2.dupont.com/Plastics/en_US/Products/Delrin/Delrin.html

It's pretty tough stuff, it holds threads well.

I believe he is using the 499 because it works better with alki fuels (larger porting, for the venturi size). Also, from my experience, having a slightly smaller venturi will make more torque.

Yep, if I can run a 20" WWI type propeller on it using FAI glow fuel I'll be happy. I've run it on the bench and it's a very smooth running engine.

It looks like Bisson is making a new muffler for this engine as well. It appears to have more volume than the first one they made.

Do you have any drag racing activity in your area? If so, methanol will be available, and pretty inexpensive. If you are using strate meth, and oil (castor/synth blend), it'll be cheaper to "roll your own".

Yea, There's a drag strip in Bithlo not far from me. I'm thinking along the same lines. I've got 4 gallons of Blendzall green label. It should last me a while.

To anyone who is using Max's kit...

How is the sensor ring supposed to be mounted?

My sensor ring does not look like the one in the instructions Max e-mailed me.

Worst still if I orient the ring as per the instructions with the "adjustment screw" facing straight up in relation to the head, then the ring is restricted by the carb mount...

See attached picture.

You've got it about 90 degrees off....

orient the ring as per the instructions with the ''adjustment screw'' facing straight up in relation to the head

Adjustment screw straight up and down like the way the piston travels.

That's just it.... I don't have an "adjustment screw" like that in the instructions.

Instead I have a tangential tightening screw that is much like a hose clamp screw.

I can't position it straight up, as then the tightening arm is blocked by the carb mount.

Click on the picture I posted and you'll see the problem.

Also note the position of the sensor when the screw is straight up.

Orient the pick-up ring such that the screw is in the vertical plane. Not the tab it runs through.
