I still find it very funny people are still questioning the durability of this little truck. Take away the esc and motor (made by castle not hpi) and the servo and it's a very solid truck the only weak points are the shock ends and drive cups. I have about 50 packs on mine at this point and have only broken 2 shock ends(replaced with rpm ends problem solved) and a drive cup. I can't say the same for any traxxas vehicle I have ever owned.

nothing was different when i did the steps above. but seems like when i wiggle the wires from the motor to the esc i can get it to work when it binds. like lets say i pull the trigger and its binding and not working if i wiggle the wires on the motor it will start working. but i can tell what wires sometimes its c somtimes i have to wiggle all of them. no ryme or reason. sometimes the wires heat up while other times they stay just warm.

im not questioning the durability. just seems there are people who have bad luck, and people who have good luck with this truck. I even had a bandit vxl. now i literally beat the crap out of it. never broke anyhting buy 2 caster blocks. hpi is known for durability. i WILL buy the flux xs, i just pray i dont go thru all the issues other people are having. i know the servo is a wek point and i already plan on buying one with the flux, but how come the motor is not high end as you would like it to be?

I just dont want to have to be replacing parts on it every week. i'e never beat my rc's, just do speed runs, go thru dirt and maybe a small jump here and there. i dont beat the crap out of it. if i am to get it, i already planned replacing the steering servo. but i dont wanna be the unlucky one who haas to keep replacing parts. hasn't hpi made these better yet since they first came out?

Maybe you shouldn't spend the money on the XS since you are so worried about breaking parts and since you also don't bash your RC's. Since you are just into speed runs and such maybe you should look at an on-road car.

its not being worried about breaking parts thats the issue. parts are going to break and i understand that. but something from HPI (the most durable compared to others) should have this many troubles. I do bashing to some extent. i just dont take them off 6 foot high ramps pr beat the crap out of my rcs. whats the point in the hobby if most of time time spent with it is down time or replacing parts. I'll definitely what its used for, but i wont push it to the extremes. its just unfortunate that something from hpi, especially under the savage series has this many issues. i may end up just purchasing one and hope i get a good one that doesn't have all the problems like rustproofcorn is having. thats ridiculous.im not expecting a perfect rc that will never break. i hope you guys understand what im saying.

Man dont let me be a factor in your decicion. i think if i was more experiance i probably would be fine. honestly i am going to get this thing going hell or high water because i want it to do some of the stuff i see in other videos lol. i am actually contemplating on buying another. lol. just for the parts.

well im 100% sure that im going to buy it, i will just us this thread for reference to any trouboes, which i hope i dont have any. i will go easy on her for a while till i actually start gettin in the throttle

The motor has lots of power and I have no issues with it except it runs hot and has a high amp draw. The castle 3800 is much better runs cool on 3s and get longer runtimes.

can i buy a better esc, and motor for this thing that is water proof? also can i buy a tranny that is pre assembled? if i change the esc do i have to change the transmitter too? i want to keep this thing waterproof but get rid of all this crap thats giving me headachs. or would it be better to just get another one and use this one for spare parts? i can get one from tower for 100 bucks for 3 months plus i think you can get 50 off of that.

I waterproof my own stuff but there really isn't anything else that is waterproof out of the box except a vxl system.

Look up the videos on youtube, I would suggest the ones done by a guy named squirrel. He will show you step by step how to waterproof your esc, I also have heard people are having a lot of luck with the mamba max pro esc on this truck. Thats the one I plan on going with.

I use the corrosion x method, squirrel uses liquid electrical tape both work great. You can also find videos on the corrosion x method.

I have had this truck for about a month now, and probably have gotten about 90 minutes of drive time. When it's running it's awesome, It was just hard to get through one battery without it breaking. I have replaced almost every part on this thing already, some because they were breaking, and some just because I wanted the better parts. I have gotten almost every Hot Racing part for it, and a lot of those parts I haven't even ran it with yet, I'm hoping their CVDs last longer than the HPI ones did. If the Hot Racing ones break after 10 minutes like the HPI CVDs and dog bones, I will probably just go back to buying dog bones.. I'll  just buy a crap load of them i guess. I just really wish someone would make axles with a slightly larger cup and a thicker dog bone for it... when you have the Hot Racing c-hubs, there is definately room for it.

I would suggest getting the MMP speed control for it too, I had 2 of the stock ESCs burn up on me, second one went up in smoke, first one went up in FLAMES in my living room before I even drove it haha. I probably already mentioned this earlier, but I just want to say ever since putting in the MMP I haven't had a problem since, just a little over heating from time to time.

Your vxl system will work fine it just won't be as fast or torquey as the vxl is 2pole vs 4pole on the castle motor. The link you posted is the same motor I am running but with a different esc. Just be careful that one has a 5mm shaft on it not 1/8 there is another version with the smaller shaft.

Dont count on those cvd's lasting I only got about 4 packs out of mine before one snapped. My advice is just to stick to dogbones

Nope 1/8" this is the one you want http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_221_1889_1890/products_id/202069/n/Castle-Creations-1410-1Y-4-Pole-Brushless-Motor-3800kV

With this esc

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_221_1357/products_id/156393/n/Castle-Creations-Mamba-Max-Pro-1-10-Sensored-Sensorless-ESC-w-SmartSense

Or the combo with the 1/8 shaft you can use the 5mm but you would need to find pinions.

Rustprofcorn,   i highly sugest you get a Mamba Max Pro and enjoy.
I use it in the snow here in Canada every day and i did not wateproof it. I just put the ESC in a ziplog bag (ziptied) and lowered all the setting to lowest power till spring  (or it will overheat in the bag).
Much better ESC and it just works.
The motor seems ok so far but you could try castle 3800 or Tekin 4000 kv 4 pole if you wanted the best.
Replace screws as you go , they strip easy..
The stock reciever will work just fine with any ESC. Tekin also makes a very nice ESC, better then the Castle stuff.
I also driled holes in the body for better ESC cooling.
My steering servo is Hitec 645 - works great .  Also motor pinion treadlock is a must. I also greased the metal gears , that seemed to make the truck a lot less noisy.
Spray WD40 on it after snow and rain runs or the screws and bearings might rust.
I also cut the antena tube all the way down so just a bit of antena wire pokes out of it and tape that to the antene tube.
The rear knuckles break easy on jumps . Drill them so you can place a zip tie arround it and it will hold trough mild   bashing till aluminum parts come in the mail
Hard case 6000mh 2s lipos fit great and have enough amps for the hungry motor.

Hope this helps .

Vanya

I was over at bigsquidrc.com and saw that HPI just announced a kit version of the xs at Nuremberg show!

HPI Savage Flux XS SS (KIT)

quote:

HPI Racing  seems to be ruling the Nuremberg show this year with all sorts of new releases. This one the HPI Savage Flux XS SS. I suddenly feel we need a ‘say it, don’t spray it’ category. Anyway, there are not a lot of details, but it sounds like this is going to be more of a kit version. So you will need to supply the electronics and some paint. Great for anyone looking to save a few bucks.

I'm a complete newbie to the RCs the XS was the first truck I have purchased and I have been very pleased so far it has ran great for me. I have put about 12 packs through it and I have only ran in to the following:

One upright broke this was due to a complete newbie driving it and basically made the truck cartwheel on its wheels down the road way to fast.

Some screws are striping this is because I overdo everything including tightening things down.

The horizontal bars that the body attaches to broke but after looking at the design of course they broke and will just stay broken.

The other thing I did was reroute the antenna cable so that the rear axle wouldn't catch it. After I did that the plastic antenna cover on the outside broke off once when it flipped over and I noticed I only had about 1 inch of plastic on the outside as well as 1 inch of antenna cable so I just put a little plastic cap over that and it works / looks better than the long plastic tube that wasn't doing anything.

My drive cups haven't been wearing yet although I have kept them greased up.

I am running stock on everything even the servo which I don't currently have a problem with and that is probably because I don't know how good it can be lol.
