Status: offline 		Along with giving my Corsair the correct "stance", I also wanted to movr the TW aft to a more correct position. The next step was to build the former that will support the TW. The new former fell between two existing formers so I was able to a partial template. I didn't take very many pictures here but I do have several pics of the former with the new (and final) retract mechanism. Here's a pic of how I got started. The next two pics are the support brackets for the new former.

Status: offline 		Off to the local hobby shop I went to pick up some brass stock. I don't know the exact dimensions of this stock but if anyone is interested I can break out the ruler and find out. Anywho...I made four "L" brackets out of brass stock - 2 to mount on the top of the former and 2 to mount on the top arm of the retract. The past-center lock will span these two sets of brackets. I cut, drilled, sanded, bolted, unbolted, sanded, drilled again, fitted, pryed, soldered, dremeled, etc. for the next few hours until I came up with this mechanism. It's much more compact and seems stronger.

Status: offline 		I bought two Spectrum metal gear retract servos...1 for the main gear doors and one for the tailwheel. I wanted to keep the retract process linear so I built a bracket to mount the servo on its side. It also had to be elevated from the servo tray to clear the rudder/tail wheel steering servo.

Status: offline 		Here's the former/TW temporarily mounted in the fuse. Once I'm sure I can get the tailwheel in and out, I'll permanently mount the former in place...I've got some more pics but they're on my phone. I'll try to post them a little later.

Status: offline 		The Super Corsair is sure to be a show stopper when finished B-Squared, great workmanship. Scale competitor Mel Santmyers had a pretty stunning Super Corsair modified from the Byron kit many years ago which I drooled over in the magazines. Most warbird guys don't appreciate the race modified airframes but I love 'em and would really like to eventually build a model of my favorite, the Red Baron RB-51 Mustang. So many models and only one lifetime!

Status: offline 		Nice build but in my opinion the aluminum is overkill !! My Meister has a short plywood spar and Jim suggested that you build a one piece wing if using any motor bigger than a G-62 Zenoah ! so i added a 3/8 " hardwood dowel & brass tube just in front of the rear spar ! I am usong a GT-80 because its smooth running & heavy !! I also added a 4-40 socket head from the bottom up thru the rear spar tab that slides into the center section !! The dowel keeps you from having flaps ! BUT they are just for looks in my opinion, as I never use them on my other 4 warbirds !!

Status: offline 		Thanks for the kind words Chad! Looking back, I would gone a little less crazy with the aluminum spar. I've seen some Byron and Top Flite pics of plug in wings and it seems those systems used much smaller/lighter brackets. On the bright side, the extra weight is on the C.G. and I'm pretty sure the wing is not going to come apart! Good looking Corsair pics.

Status: offline 		Canvasback...I was just enjoying your pics on the "Group Build" thread. Tons of great info on that thread from some great builders. I think I went way overboard with the aluminum (I wish I had used the Sig wing joiner kit)...there is certainly more than one way to skin a cat. My thought was to keep the spar extending from the wing panels so the gull section would fit in my car better. I think your method will work just fine and will certainly be lighter. Are you going to add something to the fore or aft part of the wing to give it additional strength? I'll be interested in your results...

Status: offline 		Time to hook up the pull-pull system. I first cut the steering arm to the same length as the servo arm...I then proceeded to drill the holes in the TW steering arm. In my usual distracted way, I drilled the holes too big (should have been a 1/16" bit) using a bit I had in the drill press. Oh well...I found some small brass inserts (the again blurry picture) which I JBWelded in and later ground down. Next I took the former out and cut two slots for the cables to pass through.

Status: offline 		The trickiest part of this whole procedure was to get the holes drilled in the formers for the nyrod guide tubes to pass through. I got the hole position close using enlarged holes and later glued some scrap balsa to hold the guide tube in the appropriate place.

Status: offline 		I had previously set up the retract servo...so with the pull-pull cables in place I hooked up the carbon fiber retract push rod and got out the radio to do a little set up. The results are encouraging so far. I took a video that I will try to post either later today or tomorrow. My next problem to solve is that when the TW is retracted and the line is slack, the hardware on the servo flops around contacting the elevator servos...stay tuned on that issue.

Status: offline 		Thanks for coming to the rescue, Chad. You should work for FEMA. Hello Bobh...the mechanism uses a past-center lock to lock it down. The push rod supplies (at least I hope) enough pressure on the mechanism to keep the assembly down. There are a few pics on post #190 above that kind of shows it. I'm in the process of painting the wheel assembly now so when I get it back together I'll take a better picture of it. Thanks for looking!

Status: offline 		BobH...here's a decent pic of the past center retract mechanism. You can see it is hinged at the top of the former and also attaches to the top arm of the retract. I added a plywood brace inside the fuse to stabilize the top of the former. I used 30 minute epoxy with milled fiberglass to glue the former into the two side slots and also the plywood brace. The result seems very strong. I was going to add triangle stock but I think that may be overkill.

Status: offline 		Time to get rudder and elevator hinged and connected. I had drilled the hinge point holes in both the rudder and elevators before I assembled them...Just needed to clean them up and trial fit the hinges. The elevator torque rods needed some improvement in my opinion. Both torque rods had a plastic tube (that had significant slop) that was simply glued onto the stab trailing edge. I wanted support tube that would embed into the trailng edge so I got out some brass, my snips and went to the vice. The first pic is the result with no extra slop...in fact I had to make a second set that was a slightly "looser".

Along the same lines of producing slop free tail surfaces, the aluminum rudder torque rod will be supported in three spots with brass tubes: once below the steering arm, once above the steering arm and a third which will be glued to the trailing edge of the fin (in the pic it is not glued yet). The system is not letting me load pics...I try again later.
