We've got a somewhat deserted field. It's a great public facility, and only $15/yr for a permit. My buddies and I only run into other fliers maybe half the time we go out. Sometimes it's nice to have the place to yourself, but on a beautiful Saturday afternoon it'd be nice to see some more flying.

Thank the good Lord (and I don't thank Him in vain) for the talker's...we would have zero air time at our field if these guy's were putting up...

Come fly with us at SMAA , there are combat flier, delta wing flying at mach. and a newbie on the box all at the same time. You know the only one's that hit each other ar the combat guy's, and the darts are so close to the ground that you don't find all the peaces. We have had 9 planes in the air at the same time and most generally the one that crashes is up by his self.

I am lucky, the new field that I call home has a 5 plane in the sky limit but at around 4pm on a sunday I have the whole place to myself until sunset so I gather a few pals to enjoy the airspace together.

I feel the pain of the guys who fly in congested airspace. I have seen fields where you swear an air traffic controller was neccesary.

How about 13 to 15 Zagis inside a sports dome? All going the same direction except for one : After five minutes the number is down to about five so five must be a natural limit
Guy does a loop in the pattern and SMACK! Right through the guy behind him in the pattern. Seen it too many times
Jim,
We have a four in the air limit at one field, five at a time at the other, and in eight years, I've never seen anything like this happen. Maybe if you had ten planes in the same pattern, but....

I'm a big advocate of limiting the planes in the sky to four or five. Calling deadstick should aways get priority, landing gets next highest.

We're fortunate in that the 3D guys are willing to wait for "free air". And it's kind of unwritten, that if a 3D guys is firing his beast up, the others kind of wait til he's flown.

I guess common sense and a little consideration of others is what it really takes. Fortunately, we have both.

Come on out to Sepulvada Basin!

Fortunately we have enough space for a designated Heli area and another for small electrics. Other than that there is an unwritten rule to fly the "pattern" which is down the runway into the wind.

Since there is no one in charge of the field and an average weekend day will have 50-75 pilots it can get pretty hairy. Try flying with the warbird guys who go up 6 at a time with overpowered 40 sized planes (YS 91 is the norm) and fly formations with low runway passes. Or fly while there are 2 turbines in the air. Or take out your 1/4 scale and have 8 other people take off while you are trying to fly a pattern.

It is the wild wild west out here put still a great facility and if you time it right you can get some uninterrupted flying in. I wait till there are ten planes in the air and get ready to fly. When they start landing I go out and by the time I'm in the air they all clear out. It seems people wait till it is clear and then go fly which ends up with a lot of people at the same time. If you start when it's crowded most others are waiting for it to settle down and miss the lull in the action.

So if you happen to be in SoCal stop by for the show. It is amazing to most visitors that the field does not have anyone in authority yet things still work out for everyone.

Then you are either very lucky or you all fly aircraft of similar performance.

Having a big floaty Tigermoth in the same pattern with a Nelson powered Diamond Dust is a recipe for disaster. Mix in a heli and Funfly plane and you're sure to see some carnage if you strictly enforce the pattern.

The pattern is a great way to control airspace over the field but, just like at the real airport, there's a heck of a lot more airspace out there.

Q: if everyone flies the pattern all the time, how do you practice spins, Cuban-8s or any aerobatic pattern for that matter?

Yes, we have the prority calls for deadstick etc. but we also call low-pass or low pass from the {compass direction} (if anti-pattern). Mild non direction-changing aerobatics (eg. slow roll) are permitted in the circuit, all others must be performed out of the circuit or, by special pre-arrangement eg. "Hey guys, gimme a couple minutes to do some low-n-slow stuff over the runway ok?"

It's just the same rules you learned in the sandbox. Share the resources and everyone gets equal time centre-stage while emergencies have priority.

Ausheli,

I would have thought that a club in Kal would have more than 5 members, or is that just how many people are actually flying on any given day?

Nah Troy we have about 20 members but remember we work 12hr shifts 14 days straight then have a 5 day break, so usually 5 members at one time several shifties have their own fly time when they are on break, and we have ours on our break

Ausheli,

One of our members used to be a member of your club when he lived in Kal. David Holub is his name. Hes probably our best flyer.
