I am starting the process of buying the parts for LA7 and have a few questions. Here is what I am going with so far:

Scale Wings LA7 1:3.5 with all the accessories
Moki 7 cylinder 250ccm when it comes out

Have not picked a paint scheme yet; struggling with this since the paint schemes I really like are not scale.

Now for a few questions, I have attached a few photos a LA7 aircraft and they look to have a fan like the FW190.

1. Does anyone know for sure this is a fan?
2. If it is, could a person use a fan made for a simular scale FW190; do you think it would look okay?

Since the 7-cylinder motor will be hid a bit behind the large spinner and fan, I think I will take the 5-cylinder out of my CARF P47 and put it in the LA7.

Scale Wings LA7 1:3.5 with all the accessories
Moki 7 cylinder 250ccm when it comes out
Solo Prop 3-Blade with CARF 32" blades (thanks Gary!)
Futaba PSS2018 SBus

I am going to talk to Down and Locked about changing over to electric for the retracts; just not sure about this part yet since I haven't seen this plane in person.

I have been contemplating the color scheme and I have it down to two, 27 and 93. I am leaning toward the 27.

Hi Chad,

I want to test using a very light coats of natural metal paint color a multi-color. I am not going for a scale paint scheme on this LA7; my CARF P47 will be that.

I will do this well before I really paint the plane. I can see what it should look like in my head. I want to see if it will work...

Status: offline 		To get that cooling fan done you need someone with a 3 axis cnc mill.. You might check with Vallincourt, I think he offers that sort of thing as an accessory for his 190, and perhaps he could point you in the right direction.

Actually, it is not a fan. They are engine louvers and were designed to help keep the engine warm during the extremely cold Russian winters. The louvers would be slowly retracted as the engine warmed up allowing more cooling air into the plenum cowl. Overheating engines was not one of the primary problems encountered with the LA series...overheated pilots was a major problem, however. The firewalls threw off so much heat that the pilots often flew with the canopies open to keep cool. They also leaked a tremendous amount of carbon monoxide into the cockpits...another reason pilots flew with the canopies open

Lavochkin La-7

This 1944 vintage Soviet fighter with a (mostly) metalairframe was derived from the previous La-5 and powered by an air-cooled, 1,850HP ASh-82FNV radial engine, which was based on the American Wright R-2600Cyclone. The engine was closely cowled and the three-bladed propeller wasfitted with a large spinner for improved streamlining. This reduced airflow tothe engine, so a fan was fitted behind the spinner to assist in cooling the big engine.

A long greenhouse canopy provided very good all-around pilotvisibility and a suite of two or three 20mm cannons provided serious firepower.Maximum speed was 423 MPH and the service ceiling was 31,168 feet. The bestclimb was 3,602 ft./min. Maximum range was 615 miles.

In the USSR, the La-7 was considered the best dog fighter inthe world and most of the top scoring Soviet aces flew the airplane. The La-7could out-climb and out-turn the popular German FW-190A series fighters that itfaced on the Eastern Front and it was much faster. Flown by an expert, it was atough adversary for any of the Luftwaffe fighters at the low to mediumaltitudes that almost all Eastern Front air battles occurred and it wasproduced in good numbers (5,753).

However, the air war on the Eastern Front was dictated bythe armies' need for tactical air support. Over Western Europe (beforeD-Day), the air war was primarily strategic and a battle for airsuperiority, as land forces were not involved; ditto over Japan. It wouldbe interesting to know how the La-7 would have faired had the Japanese andGermans been provided with La-7's to defend their homelands against thebest Allied fighters.
