Here is a status update

The real and dummy hinges are in… Have a bit of epoxy cleanup work to do on them.

Made the oil cooler exhaust flap functional which should help with getting air out of the airframe. Should create a good low pressure area behind it to pull air out. Not exactly sure how I am going to use this right now but one thought is to link (mix) the oil cooler flap (door) to the throttle position.

I sanded out the mold lines on the cowl today.

Received the retracts back from Down & Locked yesterday.

The large access door looks good when it is pulled down tight; I guess I will start with magnets to see if that will keep it pulled down and then use a standalone servo to push the door open.

Also, here are two more shots of the oil cooler door.

I got a few things done since the last post. Installed the tail gear doors and dummy hinges in the cowl. I have been using a 3M full face mask for the dust.

Designed the access panel and got ready to cut the CF with a 1/8 bit then realized I didn't have a 1/8 collet, so had to order that.

I have been working on fitting a grill to the inside of the oil cooler; which still need some teaking...

I could use some recommendations on the tail gear doors. I cannot seem to find the right arm length and/or angle to make this design work.

I am pleased with the look of the oil cooler grill now... Just need to add some dirt and grime to it and it will be perfect.

The more I use the Down & Locked converted gear the more I like it. Once I get my CARF P-47 back from Graham (Jetjockgb), I will be sending that gear to them for a conversion.

Cut the access control panel out tonight along with a few other items. Almost ready to mount the oil cooler and epoxy it on.

Worked on the frame for the control panel this evening; almost done with it. Been test fitting it as I go...

If I ever want or need to change the panel layout, it will be easy to remove the insert and make a new one.

Went to mount the Moki 250 today and realized that the engine standoffs are missing.

Could use some help from ScaleWings LA-7 owners on how long should these standoffs be?

I will email Hans at ScaleWings too...

I have attached two photos are what they look like.

Mine does'nt have standoffs, it has a built up wooden mount. The measurements will obviously be the same though, I can measure it for you but not tonight.

I felt like a change of pace on the LA7 assembly so I started working on redesigning the fuel tank holder and equipment tray.

My LA7 came with only one of the round fuel tanks and it has been a pain trying to get another for a smoke-tank. So I decided just to go with DU-BRO 80oz tanks for fuel/smoke. This required a redesign of the original ScaleWings parts and I also extended the length from 200mm out to 500mm. This will allow me to mount the Futaba PSS2018 and all the other items like batteries and APS fuel / smoke pumps on this one slide out assembly.

The first photo shows what the original holder looks like…

Hello wxman,
I saw the picture of the book about the La-7 and it looks, that it is in the Czech language. If you want, I can translate something for you, if you don´t have it in the English.

Thanks Perkin,

I may take you up on this offer... I have one MBI La-7 book that is in Czech with an English translation, but have been using Google Translator for some other Russian manuals.

Finished up the 2D CNC drawing... Plan to cut this out of wood first to make sure of the fit before cuting the carbin fiber.

I posted an open question about using a shaft couper here for this project:

The top and bottom trays are built... Just need a bit of time for the epoxy to cure and will finish up the assembly in the morning.

Plan to mount the motor tomorrow to figure out how long the standoffs need to be.

The main wheel covers that came with the plane are plastic and I started the process digitizing one of them so that I can cut it out of aluminum.
