Dave,
Would it possible to adapt a YS heli engine for Classic Pattern use? My main concern is the port timing/torque curve characteristics compared to the normal Pattern type two strokes.

Thanks,
Jim

Yes, the main difference other than crank snout length is that the heli engines are ABC and the plane engines are ringed.

You're right. It is.
Aircraft engines are ABC
Heli engines are ringed in the two stroke line.

A guy on the forum, "the Cable Guy" races a 46 size P-P51 powered by YS 91SR-3DS two stroke heli engine with a Mac tuned pipe running an APC 11x11 15.500 rpm on the ground. And I heard it unload in the air!
That's some serious power, about 3.8hp. It does not seem to have the poor mid range that's exhibited by some other heli-on-prop conversion I've seen. You could adjust for a pattern prop like a 12X7,12X8 or 13X5 ?
You would need to contact Tru Turn to select a "short shaft adapter" in order to run a prop on a heli engine. There is no free lunch for power, expect to consume about 6 oz. a minute of 30% fuel at continuous full throttle.

Serious power requires serious amounts of fuel!

Were there any rear exhaust YS heli engines?

None that I have seen, OS makes rear exhaust, I don't know about the mid range on those. Keep in mind that ( the Cable Guy) didn't spend much time in mid range and I didn't hear it stumble or smoke trail change. You may wish to contact him to get more detail before you consider this route. He also used the latest YS engine, some earlier engines used for this purpose(prop) had running problems I've heard.

He also mentioned the tube length between the check valve and engine (see manual) is very critical!
