Anyone out there with theis nice "little" Tiger moth ?

It looks like Phoenix has revised the kit, and have now made a removable hatch for easy acces of the electric version.
But it also makes it easier to install the tank and servos in the glow version.

Wings are removable, and have alu wing spars, and are held on with plastic screws.

The hardware pack is very nice and complete, and the instructions are better than the usual chinese manuals.

All of the control surfaces expet the rudder have nice traditional hinges installed, and pinned.
The rudder uses CA hinges, and you have to install the tail wheel before glueing it together

I bught this model because I have a saito 72 without a job.
It will fly great with throttle management.

I hope this one flys well.


Got a little more done.
Im painting the black cabane struts to yellow, but its not an easy job. My rattle can spray pait has reacted with the original paint, so it will require some work....
The Saito fits well under the cowl.
I think the pilots sit too low in the cockpits, so I will remove them, and shim them up, so the sit taller....and paint them another color.
I bent the landing gear to a little more scale position, and i plan to add more braces as the real tiger moth has.

pictures taken at night, dont do it justice...it looks quite nice in real life

Installed some 75mm wheels, looks a little better than the ugly ones included.
All the servos installed, and pushrods connected.

Time for decals, and a few details to make it more scale

Here are some daylight pic of it.
Got the cabane support wires on, stickers applied, and made some extra scale bracing on the landing gear. Im going to make som covers for the wires on the lainding gear, so it looks more scale.
Cut the pilots out of the cockpit, to make minor mods there.

Still quite a few thing to do....

Status: offline 		Well, quite good weather today,and even thouh im not finished yet, i used the opetunity to take some test flights.
Had 2 flights, until one of the wing strut bolts loosened, and I didn`t have any tools with me to fasten it again.
Ill give them all lock tite now.


It flew well with the CG at 45mm on the lower wing balanced upside down.
The manual is confusing. It shows the CG on the top wing, but the text describes it at the 45mm from the leading edge of the wing on the fusealge.

Elevator and aileron are quite numb....so I gave it double up on the throws than the manual suggests.
Rudder is very effective.

This is not realy a good plane for a beginner, as it is not that easy to fly.

My first takeoff failed
I gunned the throttle, and it just nosed over.
You have to gently increase power, and feed in just enough elevator to keep it level....so it does not take off too early, or too little, and it noses over.

Once in the air, you have to use alot of rudder in coordinatin with the ailerons to get it around nicely.
Its a very stable plane, but wind gusts do thorw it around a bit. and you can deffinaly feel a crosswind.

But it looks fantastic in the air, and you realy go back to the 30`s eara

It seems that Tower(Hobbico) just doesn't import them other models. See that Bulldog bipe? Very nice, and would probaly sell good also. The Sbach is another that would sell. Come on Tower, bring the good ones to the States!

Status: offline 		Horizon Hobby is the USA importer for Seagull Models. For the longest time, HH only imported a very few of the available models from Seagull. Finally, they got a clue and this past year have been bringing in all sorts of the varied Seagull Models. It's a real nice choice now. So maybe Hobbico will see the light and bring in the rest of the Phoenix line.

Status: offline 		Most TM's balance right at the rear of the cabanes on the top wing.
From your flight report she sure sounds like a true TM. On take off you just can't go WOT all at once. You need to be very smooth and fluid like.
I do love the way they knife edge. And with all that rudder you can get them to flatspin.

Status: offline 		The 45mm CG is just at the LE of the aft cabane, with an empty fuel tank.
Im probably a little nose heavy at the moment.

Installing the 2 pilots will move CG slightly aft, and ill se how it flys there.


Just gave them a little makeover.
I added 7mm under them, as they sit too low in the cockpit, as you can see in the last 2 pics of the stock moth.
You can also see it is the old version which does not have the remoavable upper hatch on the fuselage as I have.
I also trimmed the windows down in size.

Status: offline 		Awesome plane, realy happy with it.

I have moved the CG back, and it has improved the flight behavior a lot. When it was nose heavy, its too directional, and wont bring the tail around in turns unless ou give alot of rudder.
Moving the CG aft, makes it fly much smoother, and no need for rudder to make it look nice.

I also moved the front wire of the landing gear further forward......this pulled the wheels further forward, so it does not nose any more.
I glued in a ply plate to support the wire.

I installed a brass tube at the landing gear, and hooked it yp to the oil vent line from the saito.
There is a massive flow of oil out of this vent line, and moving it away from the plane realy keeps the plane clean.


Awesome plane, flys very docile with no bad habbits.

Pleased to tell you I've maidened my electric version of Tiggie today.

After some initial teething problems (wire struts coming off, wrong size prop and power pack, CG etc,  it all came together beautifully in the end and I'm grinning from ear to ear now.

As you know, I converted IC to electric so I wasn't sure how Tiggie will take it. All up weight is 5lb 4oz. Less than the weight quoted by Phoenix. I can lose another 4oz when I change those glass fibre struts to birch wood which I'll do next. In the name of equal sex, I've added a female and a male pilot. Don't want to be a MCP - too many of them are around ...haha.
 
Thanx for your help, particularly WRT undercarriages, control movements and CofG. I'll post some pics soon.

Status: offline 		Here is my Flying vid of Tiggie. She really flew well.

Although I've maidened her on the 21 Oct, The vid is my official version  hence slightly different vid dates.

The maiden flight was done on Saturday, 27 October 2012. She flew really well. Take-off was a zero problem. It was a very short flight just to check Tiggie's flying characteristics. She flew really well - slow and easy just like the real thing. Landing was a POC although it may not appear so in the vid coz I changed my mind from glide to power assisted landing hence the last min wobble. V pleased with the Tiggie and my conversion of her to electric.

Thnx to Geoff J (Cameraperson) and Colin J for their help and encouragements without that I'd have been a bag of nerves needing immediately a couple of Valium sandwiches  :~).

A friend of mine watched his Phoenix Tiger Moth 40 bite the dust after a battery failure. The only thing damaged were the wings. He's given me the thing and I found a set a replacement wings for it, but I'm missing the struts and the caban elements and they don't appear to be readily available (that I can see).

I'll just make some out of ply stock and glass them, but I don't have the originals to pattern them after. Could some kind soul please give me dimensions of the struts, including the center-to-center distance of all the elements? That would really be helpful!
