Scotty:

Since it seems you're in a design course, are you supposed to design an airplane, then build it from scratch? Or take a kit that already exists and modify it?

Building a plane from scratch, even a relatively simple trainer, could be difficult if you have no experience in building and/or no access to the tools you'll need. I've attached some older, but still accurate articles about aircraft design. But I'm not sure they'll take you through the process of building a wing or a fuselage (which, by the way, is typically not carved out of a series of balsa blocks).

The thread Mike has mentioned before illustrates the building of something called an Ultrasport. If you go to the Great Planes website, you can download the contstruction manual, which will give you some idea of how the various sections of the model are constructed, then assembled into a finished aircraft.

Being in the UK I'm pretty sure you can locate a plans service there but you can go onto the Model Airplanes News web site and go into there plans section and see a lot of different type of planes that you may like. These are plans for builders so all the parts you require to build one is shown in profile for you.
I build from these type of plans but I also re-design them to suit my own needs. It's up to you what type and size you would require but they do come in several sizes from 40 size to giant scale. They are coded as to how hard the build will be. I just finished there 80 inch Sukhoi 29 and I think it is labeled for intermediate builders but if you have never built a plane before you would never get this one finished due to the design itself.
Go there and look around but keep it simple. It's easy to think something will be easy but you can find yourself over your head in a hurry.

Really? I assume the only effort you've made to learn about building so far has been to start this thread. When is it due?

Go pick up the current issue of RCModel World or RCM&E. Both excellent brit mags and have a free pull out plan as well as a build article to get it started.

I would STRONGLY suggest buying a kit and building it first before doing your own. There are a LOT of things you need to know, like how to join the two wing halves so they don't fold up on you in flight!

...or how to get the wing and stabilizers squared to the fuselage- or, how to set up your fuel delivery system.

As you can see, there are MANY things that can bite you in the butt if you have no experience - And we've only scratched the surface!

And why would a designer/scratch builder request free plans from RCU members?? Do what Mike says and go buy a kit. Building a plane from plans without any instructions is way beyond someone that has never built a kit or several. A kit from SIG or Great Planes have plans, instructions and all wood cut for you. The instructions even have photos and walk you through the build step by step.

Scott,

Consider that some motorization, radio control gear and piloting skills may be needed for a complete project.

The simplest thing is a free flight glider.

You can find also local experienced help if you start from here:
