They seem to be pretty nice and cheap. For $290 you can get a 120 size plane with pneumatic retracts. Anybody who owns? comments/suggestions/quality etc. http://www.modelflight.com.au/esm_scale_models.htm

I can give my impression of their Seafury ARF now that I have one....There was a few delay's on the shipping and I am still awaiting my landing gear, but the wait was worth it. I don't know of any other seafury ARF's on the market so I decided to give it a try. I am familiar with fiberglass fuse's and foam core wings, mostly Yellow Aircraft products, and this is of similiar makeup. Only on a smaller and much cheaper level. The glass work was suprising to me. It is actually done very nicely. The only problem I saw was the seam on the top of the fuse. If you are a perfectionist, you will have to sand down, fill and repaint. For most people building an arf, this is out of the question....that is why they bought an ARF to start with. Quick assembly and get out and fly. I on the other hand just had to repaint the plane as the classic dark sea grey upper and RAF sky type S camo. The instructions are "from china" so to speak, and some of the translation is lost or not there at all. For example, where to install the flap servo...there is a picture of it in the wing, but it is such a closeup photo, you can't tell where it goes. If you have built any ARF's in the past you will not have any trouble with it though. The servo tray's are preinstalled, and will need a little beefing up. I just ran some CA to lock up the wood and then added a little triangle stock behind the trays. I also beefed up the firewall as I am going to use a 1.6 gasser out front. I use Methacrolite glue and run a thick fillet around the firewall. While I had the glue out, I also made a fillet on the formers that were preinstalled. All of this is not necessary as the glue joints were there, it is just a piece of mind for me. The hardware is typical for an ARF. I am sure it would work just fine, however, I plan to replace in my plane. Hopefully I will be able to get it set up and fly in a week or two. For the money though, I would say it comes out of the box as a nice kit, and with a little added detail, if you so choose, can be a very nice looking plane. I'll try to post a pic tomorrow. I got an Extra (esm) from Ultimate rc and it is simply fantastic. For the price, I could not even come close to jusifying buying a kit of a similar size, taking all the man hours of builing it, then covering it (and my covering job might be half as good as the extra came out of the box....simply awesome!) Dr. Go must be retarded.

Smurfjet where did you buy your esm seafury from? Also how is the pneumatic retract system quality? They are included in the kit right?

ESM make a great Trainer, based on the British, Chris Foss Designs, "Uno Wot." It's also very reasonably priced and looks superb when comparing it with the usual run of the mill, box fuselage trainer.

Okay! I am thoroughly confused now :confused: Is ESM and KMP one in the same or these ARF's being manufactured by two different manufactures. Someone please enlighten me, I would appreciate it. Equest

ESM is the manufacturer for KMP in USA/Canada and for RCFlight of Scandinavia, YT International in the UK, in part Graupner Germany etc. In some areas like Australia the models are sold under the ESM own brand name. Anyhow, this steadily increasing model range - which is of exceptional quality and value - is the same; we are talking about identical airplane models. Singapore Hobbies has quite a few ESM kits, the katana 40 seems to have good reviews. Has anybody heard of CMP airplanes ? ( www.cmpairplanes.com). I was wondering if the katana 50 is the same ESM model>

CMAIRPLANES is CM pro - china model productions. As for ESM - 2 of us have their 2m Katana, with Mokis in them. There were a few issues with instructions (eg rudder horn position is wrong - too high), the horns are crap for such a big plane etc - normal things you expect. The wing joiner tube (alloy) needs lots of rubbing down to get it easy to fit/remove. Watch out for warps in ailerons and elevators - I didnt find mine until after they were hinged and glued, BUT I got all the warps out with a heat gun, and now it flies beautifully! Spec cg is fine, lands very lightly, just watch out that you dont think its closer than it really is on final if there are any obstacles in flight path (like our boundary fence!). 15lbs/7kg, Moki 210 & 180, no problems. I beefed up the firewall area, epoxied the whole area, fitted a home made tank close to the front. Best part is that I made email contact with a Jack at ESM from the web site, and they have been very responsive and helpful. I had a storage accident and damaged the canopy, emailed them, they shipped me a new one no charge through a dealer, in a beautiful ply box! Still very good value - lot of aeroplane for the money! jp

One of the guys in our club had the 1.20 Mustang from YT International and it was a well built beauty and flew great. More recently my mate is building the YT Hurricane and he's had to put nearly 2lbs of lead in the nose using an OS 1.20 FS to balance - not so good. I'm betting that's gonna be a pig to fly - I'll let you know when it maidens. Cheers Pete

The Hurricane was test flown on an RCV91 which required lead to balance, your mate should be looking for an all up weight of about 12 1/2lb. Most of the ESM / YT war birds have fairly accurate scale outlines, subsequently they may well need lead to balance to achieve the right flying characteristics. Unless there is any unnecessary weight on the back end he should not have any problems. I have a ESM Critical Mass. Very well built and one of my favorite airplanes. Got it from KMP which is also a very good company.
