MR is best bang of bucks for 1/18 model? If not what else do you guys prefer 1/18 or 1/16 dont matter. under $150

Overall,...depends on your plans for it. BUT... it is definitely in the top for that price range IMO. 2.4ghz alone really helps to put it there!

I think it performs pretty good. Its a quick little guy. Def. have to watch the little rocks etc that can get caught up in things, but even hendles well on grass. For the $ you can't go wrong! IMO

ran mine on the stock battery 1st charge I think I got around 20-25 mins runtime
modded the tray a tiny bit to fit my 2S lipos in (had some small cheap 1300mah 2S's from a heli I totaled last year), but on my days off when I have free time the weather has not been the most co-operative thing for RC'ing

Hi Guys,

Would really love some advice!

We're going to get a couple MR's, probably from amainhobbies as the shipping is not too bad to here in Australia.

Want to go brushless, not sure whether to go for any of these 3 (4200, 5400, 6800 kv) or something else?

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_221_1354/products_id/24738/n/Castle-Creations-Mamba-Micro-Pro-1-18th-Scale-Extreme-Brushless-Car-Package-4200KV

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_221_1354/products_id/24739/n/Castle-Creations-Mamba-Micro-Pro-1-18th-Scale-Extreme-Brushless-Car-Package-5400KV

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_221_1354/products_id/24740/n/Castle-Creations-Mamba-Micro-Pro-1-18th-Scale-Extreme-Brushless-Car-Package-6800KV

Not sure which Lipo too, I have a charger etc. Anyone know what will fit? 2 or 3 cell is ok.

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1389_1393_1856/products_id/118007/n/Dynamite-2S-Li-Poly-25C-Battery-Pack-74V-1650mAh

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1389_1393_1856/products_id/143473/n/Venom-Power-3S-Li-Poly-20C-Battery-Pack-w-Traxxas-Connector-111V-1300mAh

Or something else?

Don't want to go too crazy, just have more fun than stock. Say 40 - 50 mph would be great. Will mostly be running on short grass and dirt.

Any other parts recommended?

Thanks for any advice!

Steve.

i've watch a few video on youtube. You should upgrade it with hobbywing motor and esc only $50, little bit cheaper. I don't think there is enough parts for MR yet, you should wait until their is more parts and than upgrading. brushless might be a little too much power for MR. I'm thinking about getting MR soon too.

just ordered a 5200kv setup yesterday seeing hobbypartz has the HW stuff back in stock
Saw a guy run the 7800kv on youtube his didn't wheelie from what I saw, but it did fly through a parking lot faster than hell

well I saw a guy put the recon through the paces with the 5200 in it on youtube(think the vid was posted earlier in the thread, I don't feel like checking though).
I think he actually said it was a tad slower than the stock brushed motor, but ran cool. I'll be honest only reason I want to change is the brushed motor got very damn hot from how I was driving it. Granted it isn't meant for 2+ inch grass

Only point his recon failed was when he threw a 7800kv motor in it. It survived a few minutes of speed runs till the diffs gave out.

I just bought this last night after much reading:

http://www.hobbypartz.com/hobbywing-ezrun-18a-18t-brushless-combo.html

I chose 5200 for more torque and so I can use stock gearing.

I guess it's the same one you got too SyCo_VeNoM?

Also got a couple lipos:

Hope they fit...

what does high KV and low KV number do?

kv is how many thousands of RPM a motor can put out for 1 volt inputed.

so say (not real numbers) you have a 5000kv motor and a 10 volt battery, you get 50,000rpm from this motor, at 11volts you get 55,000rpm 9volts you get 45,000 and so on.

a realistic motor for a 1/18 is 5000-6500kv anymore is strictly for overkill and will get you great speeds but will trash your drive train.

Lower #Kv = torque
higher #Kv = speed?

also depends on who made the motor..
I've seen some higher kv motors put out more torque than the lower kv motors...

I forgot to mention gearing is very important too, sometimes a high kv motor won't be able to get up into it's high revs where it makes power because the cars gearing is too long for it to pull without a ton more voltage like a 4cell pack. The whole thing starts getting expensive especially when the driveline melts from all the extra power as the other guys mentioned.

Actually a brushless motor has most of its torque at low rpms, or right off the line
they don't need to build rpms like a 2 stroke to make hp
that's why brushless pull harder during a start than nitro
and you can gear the motor to a heat range
and they will pull excess amps not volts if geared to high for speed, the amps is what heats them up...
and the more amps a motor pulls the more HP it makes!

A brushless motor does not have most of its torque anywhere, it's completely linear. That's its advantage over nitro. The WATTS is what heats motors up and HP has nothing to do with amps. Watts to HP is a straight conversion (pretty much). If you want a comparison, volts is like how many legs the horse has, amps is how muscular (strong) the horse is, and watts is the actual power the horse puts to the ground (hp) by combining the other two.

well actually, amps x volts = watts
pull to many amps through a motor, more than its rated for it heats up, same as to many watts... so its really the same, kinda
the best setup for big FE is more Volts and less KV = less amps = less heat... more KV less Volts = more heat ... same watt output.... hmmmmmmm
and again Amps X Volts = Watts = HP
just worded different but the same conclusion.. HP
you can't have Watts without Amps
14.8V x 50.4 Amps = 746 Watts = 1 HP
and I get ya on the Linear power from brushless motors.. and most brushless trucks with big power can do standing back flips... not much rpm needed
