I just purchased a Futaba Conquest FP-T6NFK radio. On the back is a gold sticker that says "RF check date 11-93. 72.90 mhz.. Since this radio has quite a bit of age on it, does it still qualify to be used without any modifications. It is chan. 20. On the front it says "Internal Radio Frequency Module System." Providing a range check is good, does anyone know if it is okey to use this radio since the RF check says Nov. 1993. It came with a receiver still in a plane. Got the plane with servos, receiver and transmitter for $25.00. I know the origional owner, who is honest, but no longer can fly due to his eye sight.

As long as it is Gold Stickered, you can still use it.

Thanks for this info. I will do all necessary tests before I actually use it. Got a real good bargain on several items that just need cleaning up and completing.

Be aware that you can't just change a crystal and have a different frequency.  The transmitter needs to go to a FCC licensed tech for a frequency change.  The receiver can switch channels with a new crystal though.    Given the price you paid, I would keep my eye out for a used Futaba 9C to use with the receiver and servos you have and give you a more modern computer radio system.  It will work with either PPM or PCM receivers and changing frequencys is as simple a pulling a module out and inserting another.

Also, I would really consider replacing both the transmitter and receiver battery unless they are less than three or four years old, and even then I would carefully test them.

The Transmitter and matching receiver are PPM mode units.  A new receiver must be a PPM  (FM) receiver, not a PCM one.

The battery for the TX is the same a the 9C uses. so if you decide to upgrade, the battery can be used in the 9C, and probably other Futaba transmitters also.

Overall, I think you got a deal.

double check that frequency - Channel 20 is 72.190 MHz, not 72.90 MHz.

72.90 doesn't appear to be on the list of RC channels..

Ch.# / Frequency (MHz) Ch.# / Frequency (MHz) Ch.# / Frequency (MHz)

11 / 72.010 28 / 72.350 45 / 72.690

You are correct. I just made a typ-0 error. It is 72.190.

Futaba states the all FM transmitters are narrow band. Not all FM receivers are narrow band though.

In 1991, all transmitters had to be certified that they were Narrow Band with a Gold Sticker affixed to the Tx.

The Gold Sticker Program was an AMA program used to help modelers identify systems that conformed to the narrow-band specifications that came into being a number of years before 1991. Systems were upgraded or checked to see if they were, indeed, conforming to narrow band specifications. The FCC regulations stated that, after 1991, no wide-band equipment was legal to use in the 72/75 MHz frequencies. Manufacture of wide band systems had been terminated several years before that. The sticker program eventually died out in the 90's because wide band systems were no longer seen, and all newly-manufactured systems conformed to the legal specifications. Wide-band equipment also tended to be on the old, illegal channels as well.
