I thought I had an original idea, lol. So how well are the combined SPA/CPA type contest working out? I know we normally have 4 classes on two flight lines, but this last contest we added Senior Expert, and the contest ran just as smooth. That got me to thinking, why not add a class for CPA. It would make sense to me that if a guy wants to go Ballistic with retracts and a pipe, he should be a pretty accomplished pilot, right? So add CPA Expert to be flown on the same flight line as SPA expert.

I know the SPA interest in our area is really starting to blossom. This would be a great way to introduce the CPA, and it could be looked at as a level to aspire to be at. We had a 10 year old place third in Novice B, and at least one more young dude competing. The excitement is growing!

Is there a championship points race for CPA, or is it just a per contest win for now?

Blake,

Your idea was tried at a contest in Apopka, Florida back in 2007. The SPA and BPA type aircraft were flown in the same classes, but were scored separately and awards were given separately to the SPA and BPA types. It seemed to work fine and good time was had by all.

Jeff

Blake, it s impossible to set controls on full for each maneuver. You would constntly be turning switches on and off. Sometimes y0u can set your ailerons for consecutive rolls successfully, but you might not have enough throw for the other rolling maneuvers, cubans etc. Still may have to go to two different rates. As far as size of maneuver, though size is not necessarily mandated in the rules, too small will bring deductions from judges. Makes them too quick and too easy. Too large of loop requires more corrections, particularly if the plane slows douwn too much. Don't make it too hard on yourself. Learn to fly it thru. IE: a fifty foot loop may not score well at all, conversely, a 300 ft loop may exaggerate mistakes. Pick a 100 t0 200 ft loop and fly it thru. Base it somewhat on your planes performance. Make a loop that your plane and power flys thru smoothly without too much loss in speed. Set the shape and size of the loop on entrance, as the plane nears the top part of the loop, relax the elevator throw and let the plane fly itself over the top. Then try to pick up the same amount of elevator on the backside to equalize the loop. I know, I know, easier to say than do.

I went to practice, as we have a local SPA contest on the 8th of Oct. One of the officers was there and told me there is enough interest that we may host more than the two SPA contest per year that we have been!!! This is great!
