I recently purchased one of these engines for my 40size cap.
The engine seems to be really finicky with the needle adjustment, not to mention she puffs alot smoke.
Just wondering if anybody has noticed these to be really picky?
And also what glowplug and nitro are you using with it?
I am currently using 15% fuel with a O.S A5 .

I have a ST 45, 51. I had to find the old type of barrels for the ST carbs. ST years ago made a great motor, and carb. They have swapped carb designs and now the carb load up alot in the mid range.
If you have never had a ST before. Read the manual. It will give you some pointers on how to set the low end. It takes a little learning to get the low end set. Also my 45, and 51 took over 1 1/2 gallon of fuel to start getting broke in.They are a little finicky to set some times. But once you learn how it is a breeze. At least it is on a old carb anyway. They new carb barrel I could never get set exactly. So I started looking at swap meets to find an old carb for my 2 engines.

My ST 45, I used about 2 1/2 gallons. It is now coming alive. Throttle responce is excellent w/ no hestitation.

I have a ST 51 that I have run 6 gallons thru. I bought it used from a guy that flew it every weekend for a couple of years. That he bought used from a dude. This ST is well over 6 years old. (to my knowlege) I wore it out. I need to tear it down and rebuilt it. But it is a wonderful mtor.

I picked up a St .61 ABC on my way to Toledo, I run it on Fox 5% nitro with 20%lube half castor and half syn. I use a Fox Gold Post idle bar plug and it is not finicky at all. 15% is a lot of nitro for a ST.

Agreed, 15% is alot of nitro for a ST. They are a lot happier with 5% or 10%. I have just used Tower house brand plugs and never had a problem. The carbs are different to set up than other carbs, due to their sensitivity. If you have the carb directions follow them to the letter and make all adjustments in very small increments.

There is a post by A.M. Cross on the other engines forum on here whereby she explains how to set up the ST carb. She is the Customer Service Rep for Great Planes. They are now the world Distributor of Super Tigre engines.

It amounts to removing the carb. You turn the spraybar to where the half moon slit is looking straight down the barrel.

You set the idle needle to where it is half way into the slit when you have the throttle held wide open.

After you get the engine running and get the high needle set, then the low needle,... you adjust the richness out of the midrange by turning the spray bar a little bit one way or the other.

I have a lot of ST engines and have not had any trouble with them. The newer carbs with the round spray bar seem as easy to adjust as the older ones with the straight sides except the high rpm is down a little. There is one carb on the big Super Tigers like the 2300 that has a dog leg cam slot on it. This carb seems to be more trouble than the rest. There are also other brands of carbs that will work on a ST like the Perry and some of the Magnum carbs.

I have an ABC and a ring type G61. Also two G91's, ringed and ABC S61K's, A G51, A GS40, A COMO S40, 3 G21 46's, and a G21 40.

Good luck

Jim
