Saw this in another thread:
I would use 2 large geared motors turning two ducted props. Which produces much better static thrust on less juice than a ducted fan.
I took a quick look at motor stats on GWS, and sure enough the quote a lot more thrust out of their 300 motor as an EDP than an EDF, even with a 45mm prop (which I think is close to the same size as the 50mm fan unit..)

Question is why? And if that's true, then why ever use a fan instead of prop in the duct? Is it that static thrust and thrust at flight speeds are different?

I also have been trying to find the answer to this question. My electric home built ddust hybrid is fast(85-100mph) with a mega 16/15/3 and 4s2p lithium polymer, but how can it be a faster plane with an edf with the same cell count battery pack. my setup pushes out about 40ounces static thrust and pitch speed or 79mph, all my calculations with a edf are much smaller in the area of static thrust, but seem to have a much higher pitch speed?

very good question someone with experience please help out a couple of newbie edf hobbyist, thanks

Me too. I purchased a standard GWS ducted moter/fan unit thinking I would retro fit it into one of my wrecked planes, but after looking up the thrust output - I bailed out of that idea. Now I think I need two Ducted fans to make it worthwhile.

Prop vs ducted fan. my guess:
I would expect the tip wash-out to be better in a ducted environment vs the open air turbulance around a prop, so perhaps it's stronger in that there is less extraneous drag around it's thrust line/vector.
