In John Redmans thread we have been talking about CG issues... this plane needs nose weight

I tested my CG just to get an idea where I'm at, even with my larger motor, ESC and 12s 65c 5000 mah packs I need nose weight. So my plan is to put my RX packs, RX, air vavles as fas forward as I can get them. I feel even with that I'm going to need a little weight up front. It got hot in the shop but I plan to head back out later when it cools, I hope to have it all tied up tomorrow...will see.

It's taken way to long to get this plane, send the messed up one back, then the replacement, waiting on landing gear, waiting on the CC 160 HV..... this plane really wore me down with all the waiting

can't wait to be done and get back to my jet project, but it sounds like it will be worth the wait and it's looking nice

Mine is all hinged and I followed John Redman's addition of additional covering to the control surfaces but I haven't touched it since because I built a TF Cessna 182 ARF. So, now I'm going to get going again!

The 20x15 prop that hacker recommended is not enough prop. I'm only getting 2700 watts, I'm thinking a 22x12 will get me up to 3500-3800 watt range where I want to be. So I'm going to order a few props to try (glad I didn't waste time painting this prop before I tested it)

It took 12oz of lead in the nose to balance so if you are doing this plane go for a big motor..... something with more mass than my A60-16L. Maybe the hacker A80 or rim fire 65cc would be better, it will stay cooler and turn a small prop with ease. I wouldn't bother with the suggested stock power 160 10s setup you will have to add two pound in the nose

So I have to wait for props, but I will add the last few stickers and such while I wait

I don't like dead weight either and was planning on the Power 160 but after hearing about the weight needed, I may go with a Rimfire 50cc which weighs 44 oz and has a Kv of 230. Plus it puts out nearly 5000 watts continuous, so with 12S, I may be able to swing a Solo Prop 4 blade, although I will initially fly it with a two blade.

What do you think of the Rimfire 50?

From what I've read it seems like the rimfire 50cc and 65cc are pretty decent motors. They don't seem to be as effiecent as the top doller motors...(based on flight times and amps to watts numbers I've seen) But I'd take them over a hobby king motor anyday.
The Rimfire 50cc is 16 oz more than my Hacker A6016L.... seeing I had to add 12oz and push everything to the nose, I think that would be a really good choice. You will just have to move a few things back and you will balance out with no added weight.
Wish I would have done the same, but whats done is done

My packs are Thunder Power 6s 65c 5000 mah x2 with the ICE 160 HV2 in the nose as well.... two 2s 2300 mah life source packs along side the main motor packs right up to the fire wall

I had considered the Hacker A-80 as I had one on a TF giant scale P-47 and it worked great, but lots more $$ than the Rimfire. But, unquestionably, a better motor!

I plan to use Hyperion 35c 5500 6S (x2). I am just getting into the build now as I've been dinking around with other projects first.

My only real concern with the Rimfire motor is how I'm going to be able to use a Tru Turn hub as they are all drilled for 10-32 bolts and the Rimfire shaft is solid. At least the Eflite motor's shaft uses a 12mm adapter and they are pre-drilled for a 10-32 bolt, so it would work fine. I just ordered the Rimfire, so I'll give it a good look over and see what can be done about the hub as the Jug has to have one! If I can't find a solution, I'll return it and just settle on the Eflite motor for now, even though I'll have to add dead weight.

Hope to hear a maiden report soon!

To move the CG forward on my E-Flight 160 Electric bird I cut out a big hole through the firewall so that when I glued on my home made motor box, I could move the batteries foreward and though the firewall.   I have done this with other planes and though more work, I don't need to add any weight and the plywood is pretty cheap.

That's a really good idea....shoot...well I'll see how I like the way it flies and maybe I'll do a mod over the winter and loose that 12oz. That's a pretty good chunk of weight to loose.

I have a couple of questions for you!

I am working on my retracts at the moment (Robart electrics) and was wondering how much (if any) of the wing rib you had to remove to get the main gear door to sit flush into the wheel well? The wheel seems to be retracted fully into the wing (I shaved off a little of the rib) but the door is high in the center where it rests on the axle.

Also. did you have any trouble with installing your flaps? I have one working (left wing) but can't seem to get the same centering and movement on the right panel. I am moving ahead with the rest of the build as I don't want to get bogged down with one issue. I tend to get frustrated and won't get anything done if I do!

Pic #1 shows the main problem which is that the main door sits high about 1/8 inch

Pic #2 shows that the inner gear door fits nicely.

I used heat and bent the doors to fit.... I did it over a few nights. When I was done for the day I would extend the gear and heat with an Iron at 325 with a sock....
I'd bend them the best I could then put the door down and heat it more and tape it over night....took a few trys but it's pretty good now

little jinky on the gear doors... there kind of filmsy too

Thanks for that. i think I'm going to try shimming the outboard ends of the retracts and see if that will make the unit retract farther into the wheel well.

Glad to know I'm not the only one with this issue. I wonder how John Redman got his to fit so well?

I used 2 #4 washers under each of the retract's outboard mounting holes and that did the trick. Pics show a nice, flush mount!

much better than mine..... I better work on them a bit more. I hated the idea of shiming the gear and changing the angle when extended

I think I'm going to remove mine and make some out of aluminum

Status: offline 		Got the maiden done today.... got very lucky!!

First off this is a sweet flying warbird. First flight she took of good, but I didn't have enough rudder on low throws with a little cross wind to stay on the center line with full rudder. So on the next flight I took off with high rates and that was much better. I will take off and land on high and fly on low. I decided to try the stock gear doors and like others mine folded back in seconds.... so I couldn't get the gear up.
It need no trim at all... did a slow pass up high and dropped to half flap, she stayed nice and level so I pulled full flaps....still nice and straight. So I buzzed around with the gear doors flaping around. Then setup for landing... I landed with half flaps on the first flight and it settled right in.

I pulled off the gear doors and put in a charged set of packs and went for it. This time I did a few rolls and full power passes...it's very fast with this setup. I ended up running the 20x15 prop on 12s 5000 mah and with fully charged packs I'm pulling 87 amps...... I'm going to prop down it's so over powered. So here is the really lucky part. I punched it to full power and it was hauling mail, I heard a popping noise but everything seemed fine. I finished out the flight and landed no problem.

when unloading the plane at home a heard something loose in the cowl... I pulled it off to find the motor mount back plate laying in there and the motor mount snapped in half with the motor just hanging there!!! how in the world it flew just fine I will never know. Feeling really lucky!! So I'll order a new mount tomorrow and get her back out soon.

But the good news is it's one sweet flying plane, looks really nice in the air and on the ground. I'll make my own gear doors.

I guess you knew what to expect with the gear doors, so at least you weren't surprised! Too bad about the mount though... I'm sure you'll have your Jug ready to fly again in no time.

I'm finally installing the tailwheel assembly and was wondering if you had to do anything to the TW opening cover? The manual says to trim the cover so it fits properly (isn't too long) but mine seems to fit with no modification. Did you have to trim yours up at all? I'm confused!

Keep the reports coming Ron and thanks for the motivation to get mine done!

Mine didn't need to be trimmed either... there was a few things that didn't jive in the instruction. But for the most part they are very good.

Do you think the broken mount was from gunning the trottle to quickly? I know that I've been warned that throttling up too quickly with my AXI 5345/14 could either break the mount or worse tear out the fire wall! These are some powerful motors eh!

What about the two springs on the Robart tailwheel? I noticed on John's videos they are not on the assembly. Did you take yours off as well?

Thanks Casey I could have been, I slammed her home pretty good But I think my prop wasn't balanced perfect, I have a hard time getting these APC's to balance perfect... I find that if I get it balanced right and then turn the prop around on the balancer it's still off. I'm going to buy a new balancer also... mine is for smaller props and that could be the issue. I'm also running a colet to extend my motor shaft and that may be an issue too. I'll order a new one as well. I'm really excited on how well this bird flies and most of all lands so I have to get her sorted out soon. We are going to be really busy the next couple weeks so not sure when I can get to it.

Curt I've had many of these robart tail wheel retracts through the years and I used to add springs to keep the wheel centered in flight when retracted... so now they come with them. You want to run them because there is nothing to center the wheel when it's retracted if not and it can get jammed on you.

Status: offline 		Hey Ron - I'm currently trying to install my rimfire 50cc into the plane. However I'm having trouble getting the motor to clear the dummy radial. Is it ok to push the prop backplate up with some kind of shim?
