I've just picked up a NIB Irvine 61RLS from the bay which arrived yesterday. It looked so much like my 40RLS I just had to have it . However I also have a new Dykes ringed 61R and they're completely different animals (apart from the obviously different coloured heads). From the parts list that came in the box, the 61RLS is quite a mixture of bits. The crankcase is the 61R but the head, piston/liner, wrist pin and gaskets are peculiar to the RLS while the crankshaft, con rod and wrist pin circlips come from the Irvine 72. This is somewhat similar to my 40RLS which is a mix of early RE crankcase with some Q40 parts and Mk3 .46 crankshaft.

Fairly soon (probably after Christmas) I'll be stripping it down to get some measurements to compare things like bore/stroke and timings to the 61R.

I only have one Irvine engine. It's a .25 RC. Must be an early version because the carb guts are aluminum instead of brass.

Yea, its an older one but as long as the quality is there it should be a good runner regardless. All mine run amazing except the 1.50 that is unrun.

A while back I received as part of trade a couple of "bumpy" Irvine .40 Mk II's.

The ABC one was OK. I gave it to Dave.

The other was set up with a Dykes ring and steel cylinder. I kept it. It was a wreck. It had been badly maltreated and run 'hot'. Really hot. The ring was so worn it wiggled in its land. The piston crown and skirt were pitch black with baked on carbon.

I found I could still get parts for it.

With back plate and carb off I boiled the engine for fifteen minutes in water and a little dishwashing liquid. I then stripped and dried it.

I cleaned the piston with paint stripper, and then used the green side of a green and yellow plastic plastic pot scourer with some elbow grease to get the hardened carbon off. It was a long job. I installed a new ring, cylinder liner, and gaskets scourced from RC Modelcentre in the UK. It was treated to a new set of screws. Du-bro 4-40 x 3/8 for the head and case, and, 6-32 x 9/16 for the muffler. New ball bearings installed care of Boca (my usual scource, R/C Bearings, did not list Irvine). Amazingly, the big and little ends of the rod, the piston pin and piston bosses were fine. The carb received a new main needle.

All other working parts were fine.

Irvine built these .40's tough.

I ran it in today. Six five minute runs with complete cool down between each, really rich for the first few runs, gradually leaning it out on the successive runs. On nil nitro home made fuel with a hot ENYA #3 plug it peaks perfectly and throttles like a rheostat. Back to readiness for many hours service.

Issues? It leaks fuel/air mix between the back of the case and the back plate. The uppermost flange of the composite back plate slightly flex's out. The exhaust is loud. Really loud. That chamberless muffler results in minimal noise reduction. I will probably install a double chamber muffler on it. To sort the back plate leak I will try a thicker (home made 1/32") automotive gasket paper gasket coated in blue hylomar. Hopefully that will sort it.
