I am getting close to having my Hanger 9 J-3 Cub ready to fly. I have had it for over 2 1/2 years and started putting it together, but crowded the Waco YMF5 in and finished it instead. I like a few things yet including the windows and wing work. It should be flyable in a week or so. It has a DLE 20 with stock muffler. I am ordering a set of Dubro cub treaded 1/4 scale air up tires/wheels for it. Dubro still have those but you have to call them to order because they are not advertised because of a legal issue with the Goodyear name on them a few years ago.
Thanks,

Eddie

Great job cannonball !!

One question....I have a 1/4 scale hanger 9 as well. I didn't want to have to open the door every time I turned the receiver on or off. Has anyone mounted the switch OUTSIDE the plane ? If so where is a good spot for this. The double wall construction makes it a bit of a problem......

Thanks, Don

I guess I need to ask the OP or someone about a Cub Brotherhood number perhaps???....I have a 1/4 scale SIG Piper Cub with the two piece wing...no functional door tho due to this kits age....thats how they rolled back then I suppose.
Thanks,
Mark

Those are 8-32 bolts with the head's cut off, hole's drilled for the pin's. And the pin's are small body clip's for R/C car's. And those are functional.

Mrwad, I was originally going to put the switches on the bottom of the cub but decided to put them inside. I'm not crazy about having to open the door to turn everything on & off either. I will try it & if I don't like them inside I can always put them outside somewhere. I put the ignition switch on the right side beside the front seat in the floor. Robert put his in an easy to get to place.
Thanks,
Eddie

I put mine on the inside of the bottom door, when you open the door and it drops down there they are.

For the cowl pins, Dubro makes some 4-40 rigging couplers You will need 3 packs of Dubro #618 4-40 Rigging Couplers (4/pkg) for the pins you can find them at most hardware stores Pop over to my site and look in the J3/L-4 related for mounting a cowl.

Greetings ... my name is robert ,and I've got a GP .60 size cub kit  with a 91" wing and I've also got the float kit to go with it that I'm getting ready to start on in about a month. Not to be presumtiuous , but I sure woul like to join the brotherhood , if I could. It would seem that #125 would be the next in line. this will be my first full kit build , and I'm working on my shed trying to put together a nice flat building surface .I'd really like to build jigs for the wing and  fuse, something that could be used in future builds as well. Any ideas would really be appreciated. I'm aware that theres several on the market , but I'm a singal dad on a tight budject, and I sure would like to build these myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thank's

well thank you ver'much... glad to be a part of this killer thread. now , as I mentioned before , I've got a great planes .60 size cub kit that I can build with a standard wing , 91" ,or as a clipped wing ,89" .  my question is this , does anyone have any experience with this kit. just wandering if theres anything I may need to pay special attention to? it looks to be a pretty straight forward build , but because here ,  I feel I'm in the midst of greatness , it sure is comforting to know that I can ask yall a question or two along the way ...    once I get my hanger/shed ready to start this project , I'll try to document as much as I can along the way. I'd like to try a different color scheme if thats ok . I think theres been more cub yellow model planes buit by this point than the real thing. and after being an auomotive tech for twenty years now , Its getting harder for me to see that kind of plane ,mono colored covering scheme . top looks like the bottom at a distance ya know. thanks again

Robert, I have built many of thuse kit's over the years. They are a clean kit, good instruction's, and very scaleable. Just take your time. And plan ahead for any mods you may want to make. We here are alway's willing to help. I don't know much but your welcome to it.

Feel free to ask away. after all we are a bunch of Cub lovers!!!!!! I have a Goldeburg Cub that is all yellow with a black sunburst on the wing and tail. This pattern is only on the top. No set rule that it has to be all Cub Yellow.

Here are a few pics from flying my 1/3 AMR J-3 Cub this past Thursday.

The plane flew great but I goofed up the landing and landed short in the tall grass causing a ground loop and a broken prop. I just finished unstalling a new prop. I will be taking the Cub to the Bluegrass Fly-In on May 5th, anyone else going?
Later!!
Anthony

Waconut,

Nice plane, sorry about the prop. Hopefully there wasn't any damage to the plane itself. I'm waiting to here back from Michel on a couple of questions, then will place the order for the 1/3 scale Cub.

Chuck

Hi Chuck,
No damage at all to the plane. It just dropped a wing tip into the tall grass and tourqued around to the right and nosed over onto the prop. The blade split down the middle. The engine was at idle at that point.
That is the 1st prop I have broken in years, guess I was due.

If you run into any questions during the build don't hesitate to ask. It is a pretty straight forward build.

Later!!
Anthony

I flew my new Hanger 9 1/4 J-3 Cub yesterday with the DLE 20 on it. It has plenty of power and will fly scale below 1/2 throttle. It weighs 16 1/2# with no fuel. It has the stock 17 oz tank. It has the Dubro air up scale goodyear tires. It flys awesome.

Thanks,
Eddie

RCJunky I have a fuse jig that is fairly easy to build that I could take a few pics of if you like..It really helps me to build my fuselage's straight..I think the original design came out of the old RCM mag yrs ago . I sort of copyied what I rembered so its not my idea but it sure works ...

Hey there Eddie, what kind of milage are you getting with the DLE-20?  From what I've been hearing it's about two minutes per ounce.  I'm curious because I'm installing a 10 oz. tank.  Glad to hear that 20 is plenty of power.  Now I can't wait to get mine done!

Take care,
David

I can not really answer your question honestly. I think I flew it around for about 5 minutes and could see the tank level was only down about 1/4 ". Of course the plane slants down at the rear but the 17 oz tank had a lot to go. It can be flown gracefully at 1/3 throttle very scale.
Thanks,
Eddie

I am going to try and get out for another flying session this weekend with the new prop and put some more stick time in. I don't want to make a fool of myself at the Fly-In
Later!!
Anthony
