Hey, can I join?

Currently working on getting the cowl attached to my Sig 1/5-scale Anniversary kit, trying to figure out how to fit it over a Saito twin. Covered with Koverall & dope, painted cream and maroon with Nelson paint. Robart scale gear, and handmade wing struts using aerodynamic aluminum tubing. She is going to end up being a two-year build.

Somebody gimme a number!

Here's an idea for you on the cowl.

If you look at post 104, check out the pic of the nose. You will see that the cowl is split between a top and bottom. The split runs roughly along the line of the exhaust pipe to the rear of the engine and somewhere at about mid cylinder height at the front of the engine.

I had the same thing to consider with my Sig 1/6 Cub as I was running a G-Mark 30 twin. I solved the problem by splitting the cowl as described.

Blast. Got two incorrect pix. The first two are my Sig 1/4 size clipped wing Cub in two different incarnations. Same plane. Originally blue/white, recovered about 20 years later and turned yellow.

How hard would it be to use this on a Balsa USA 1/4-scale kit? I anticipate ordering the B.USA kit soon. Also, do you have a hinge source specified? Assume there is an off the shelf hinge solution.

Here are pictures of how I split the Hangar 9 80" Cub cowling. I used two small nylon landing gear straps for the front mounts with small servo screws and regular screws at the firewall. The dummy cylinders are attached to the lower portion of the cowl.

The old BUSA Cub just has a big slot cut in it in line with the cylinder so with the prop removed it just slides straight on.

Hey,
where is my name??

Pulled the old cub out for a re-fit. I'm taking out the HEAVY Saito 130 TDP and going with the BME G90 gasser. Don't have the engine yet, but as soon as I get it I'll post more photos.

Cub History,,,3 Goldberg Anaverseries. Each flown to death. Still have my H9 1/4 Super Cub and this one, my Sig 1/5th scale Cub.

Well I just finished up the plans for the scale ailerons for the 1/4 scale Balsa USA version. For the hinges they are simple some K&S brass along with some Dubro clevis for the part on the plane. They have used this setup for years on the 1/3 scale. for the aileron side I use some toggle nuts from the hardware store.

I ahve been using this setup on my 1/4 scale L-4 and J3 for a few years now with no issues.

OK, I admit it. I'm a closet Cub fan. My own was a GP 40 Cub and I have built a number of the CG Cubs for people. My own was left behind when I moved to Vegas in 06 and yes, I do miss it. The photo is one I built for a friend and he is happy as can be with it. He also has it on floats. I do regret having to leave my Cub and Tiger Moth behind but my van was full. Now I'm at a point when I would enjoy a nice sit down and fly floater. This fellow I built the Cub for is a very good scale pilot and it looks so real when he is flying it. He did the covering and finish work on it. Powered with an OS .91. It's th only engine we had on hand for it. Nice plane and he did a good finishing job on it.

When I use Koverall I use Polycrylic to fill the weave. I have never used Polyurethane.
With the PolyC I thin it about 15% with water and brush 4-5 light coats with a foam brush and lightly sanding between coats after the 2nd coat. Be very careful not to sand into the fabric especially at the sheeting edges or over ribs.
This will leave a bit of the weave showing which is what I think you are looking for. I also use tapes from Pink-It.net and these tapes are cut from Solartex and iron down over the rib stitching.

There are many ways of applying and finishing the fabric, I would do alot of research on the different methods and see which one you like best.

I am attaching a couple pics of my 33% Waco during the covering process. Polycrylic was used to fill the weave and the re-inforcement tapes are from Pink-it. I was able to cover the entire fuselage with one piece of fabric.
Later!!
Anthony

Anthony that looks fantastic! Would this be an appropriate or scale covering material/method for the Cub?

Also, how much more does this covering method weigh over standard coverings?

JoeR, you might want to check out the stits system as well, http://www.stits.com/ Light and simple.
The Koverall work's great for open structures, such as the cub.

Just put in 12oz tank, up from 8 oz, and fixed my throttle servo. - looks like the clunk came off inside the tank because the tubing split. added servo wire extension so ailerons will not be so hard to hook up. charging and ready to go tomorrow. anyone done camera mount on a cub? if you had a working door this would be nice, you could put the wing on and then open the door to turn on camera and go once you are ready - I carved a sculpture of a guy in our club for my pilot. added white yarn for hair and mustache, then made sunglases out of 3X5 card paper and sharpie marker. Pilot bust is mounted to a balsa plank that covers the servos; fuel tank is still visible in front seat for easy fueling. I am in cub heaven.

My favorite Cub move is a Stall turn and a side slip all the way to strip followed up with a one wheel run down the length of the strip. A flat spin would be my second favorite.
